Download or read book Songs of the Celtic Past Classic Reprint written by Norreys Jephson O'Conor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the Celtic Past Texte, Vol. I, from the British Museum Manu script, Egerton, 1782. Because this seems thelog ical ending, and all that follows detracts from the unity Of the central theme, I have carried the story only as far as the end Of paragraph four teen, where occur the words The stories of E0 chaid and Etain are here related. The courtship plays SO small a part both in the original Irish and in my adaptation, that I have chosen The Story of Ailill and Etain as the most fitting title. Book Celtic Irish Songs and Song Writers

Download or read book Celtic Irish Songs and Song Writers written by Charles MacCarthy Collins and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celtic Irish Songs and Song-Writers: A Selection, With an Introduction and Memoirs The native Irish song-writers of the period embraced in this volume have left compositions having an interest to their countrymen, beyond that evoked by their peculiar and undoubted merit The following is a selection from their writings, and is confined to authors of undoubted Celtic descent. Biographical notices, necessarily brief and condensed, of the principal writers from whom selections have been made are included in the volume. The arrangement of the songs into Love Songs, Convivial Songs, and Patriotic Songs, will be found advantageous to the reader. The collection contains songs of various degrees of merit, but, while the majority are fairly worth reproducing, some specimens not altogether of the highest order are included. The names of a few of the authors have not an Irish sound, but I have assured myself that these are but Anglicised forms of Celtic cognomens. I have included no living author in this present series. I hope to publish a further series treating of the Anglo-Irish song writers, such as Goldsmith, Davis, Lover, Lefanu, Ferguson, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Songs: A Collection of Airs Old and New While the airs that have become most popular possess some peculiar attraction in rhythm, melody, or sentiment that has made them linger in the heart, there are other airs less direct, perhaps, in their appeal but more subtle in their charm. In the nature of things such airs are less widely known. Quite a sheaf of them are to be found in this volume. They possess uncommon beauty in music and text, together with the true Celtic flavor, and must appeal to lovers of the artistic in Folk Song everywhere. Apart from the melodies of Old Ireland, some of the modern popular Irish songs have been incorporated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It was the death-lament for Conor the King we sang, my honoured lord, and inasmuch as he hath died but a short time since, we feared you sorrowed for him in silence. And because our battle-strains or strains of love have been powerless to win you from your grief, in our affection we have fallen in with this mood, and have joined in your regrets. The death he died was a strange one, and unknown in all the annals of the land. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Irish Music: Comprising One Hundred Irish Airs Hitherto Unpublished; Many of the Old Popular Songs, and Several New Songs In modern music the seventh note of the minor scale is generally raised half a tone, So as to bring it within a semitone of the octave. This, however, was hardly ever done in Irish airs in the minor mode; and an illustration Of this remark will be found in almost every minor air in the present collection. I cannot help Observing that editors of Irish music appear to me to be Often too much inclined to force those of the Irish airs that are in the minor scale into a compliance with the modern rule, thereby, in many instances. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the Gael: A Collection of Anglo-Irish Songs and Ballads Wedded to Old Traditional Irish Airs As to the songs - I have aimed at selecting those which have in them the true national ring. We want in the Ireland of to-day an antidote to the Spirit of Anglicisation which is abroad. I know no more effective barrier against the encroach ment of that Spirit, next to the Irish Language and Irish Song, than the general singing at concerts and gatherings of good anglo-irish ballads and songs. The music hall and concert room may be made a very powerful agency in de-nationalising and even in debasing our people. From a national and moral point of View what effect can empty, Vulgar, mawkishly sentimental songs have And such songs are only too often heard at our so-called Irish Concerts. Or the song whose lewd allusions are thinly veiled? Or the songs that ignore and deliberately eschew the glories and noble deeds and sacri fices of our past heroes - what effect can such songs as these have on Irish youth It has been truly said that in a nation's ballads we find the history of its struggles and pro gress and triumph. A nation's habits, too, and its traditions and recollections are enshrined in its ballads. The wandering bards and minstrels became the keepers of the records of the nation and hence they were hunted down by the oppressors. A well-known collector of Irish ballads claims for Ireland as high a rank in ballad literature as that of any other nation. In this collection which I now give to the public, Irish men and women will find songs which are all racy of the soil.
