Book The Scotch Irish Influence on Country Music in the Carolinas Border Ballads Fiddle Tunes and Sacred Songs

Download or read book The Scotch Irish Influence on Country Music in the Carolinas Border Ballads Fiddle Tunes and Sacred Songs written by Michael C. Scoggins and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05-14 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Country music in the Carolinas and the southern Appalachian Mountains owes a tremendous debt to freedom-loving Scotch-Irish pioneers who settled the southern backcountry during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These hardy Protestant settlers brought with them from Lowland Scotland, Northern England and the Ulster Province of Ireland music that created the essential framework for "old-time string band music." From the cabins of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains to the textile mills and urban centers of the Carolina foothills, this colorful, passionate, heartfelt music transformed the culture of America and the world and laid the foundation for western swing, bluegrass, rockabilly and modern country music. Author Michael Scoggins takes a trip to the roots of country music in the Carolinas.

Book Memories of Carolinian Immigrants

Download or read book Memories of Carolinian Immigrants written by Andreas Lixl and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2009-05-16 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about identity and remembrance. This anthology presents personal narratives and historical photographs that illuminate the diversity of immigrant experiences in North and South Carolina since 1700. The broad focus of the book encompasses all walks of life and documents three centuries of social, political, artistic, and cultural history. The chapters follow historical timelines starting with colonial experiences leading up to the American Revolution, followed by immigrant accounts before and during the Civil War, experiences in the New South, and memories of twentieth century immigrants and the most recent arrivals. The common denominators of the autobiographies, diaries, and letters hinge on the confluence of American patriotism and immigrant pride, coupled with old world loyalties and new world ambitions that reflect the demographic shift from European to Asian and Hispanic immigrants in the American Southeast.

Download or read book Acoustic Music Source Book written by RICHARD L. MATTESON, JR. and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Bay asked me to write a follow up book to my last book, "The Bluegrass Pickers Tune Book (20233). If you like Bluegrass music (232 songs) I'd recommend getting that book to add to your collection. the focus of this book, the Acoustic Source Book is on roots and old-time music. the book is focused on the time period from late 1800's until 1940's. There are a few songs from the Bluegrass Book that were too important to be left out. I decided not to use any patriotic and Christmas songs and came up with a list of about 400 songs which eventually was cut down to over 200. During the late 1800's and early 1900's there was an important evolution in American music; the birth of jazz, ragtime, and blues. This was also the period of the phonograph and early commercial recordings. Music from the Minstrel period as well as traditional songs were used as staple for the roots musicians. In the early 1900's there were rags, blues, gospel, Tin-Pan Alley, jug band, spiritual, old-time country and popular songs. I've tried to include some of the well-known songs from every genre to give you a big slice of Americana. There are some great songs that are popular roots, bluegrass and old-time songs today that have never been published. There are also great songs that are not well known that should be played and enjoyed.Richard Matteson with Kara Pleasants Wildwood Flower http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KO9Xde2bdwA Paul & Silas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bv5Tmaff9HQ Meet Me By the Moonlight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gwzCZfnG64 Scarborough Fair http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grbxMlz_DlI Water is Wide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-hZkxWs8gs Richard Matteson with Jessica KasterBarbara Allen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uX6PE80W4Pw In the Pines http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtOL9Id5TW4 Hop Along Peter http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5kAzSQ__rU Ain't Gonna Lay my Armor Down http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsBYRuT2_FU
