Not only of that love manifested to us, when the only begotten Son was freely given for our sins; but of love manifested in us, when evil affections die the old man is crucified with Christ, and the Eternal Word is incarnated in our sou]s, -the life of Christ brought forth within us, the Triune God, who is love, filling us with His presence, and giving to us that kingdom which is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. Book The Way of Perfect Love Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Way of Perfect Love Classic Reprint written by Georgiana Goddard King and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way of Perfect Love Lionella, the daughter of the late Duke, being untouched by love, lived a maid among her seven handmaidens, seeking always to understand love's nature, until one time, - whereas the Duke, her cousin, had long since sought her in marriage vainly, - a Strolling Player drew her away to follow him over the world. Finding at last that he loved her less than the freedom of the soul, she found the courage to send him from her. Then she was sheltered by a Shepherd, whom - he worshipping her as something half-divine - she came to love in his turn, until the years brought by the Wayfarer again and renewed the summons of the unknown and the unfettered, breaking up her life of simpler affections. The Lady Lionella, thereupon, detached from the Wayfarer and the Shepherd alike, and withdrawn alone into the deep woods, was further purified by fasting and contemplation, and prepared for her ultimate destiny of marriage with her cousin, the assumption of duties of state, the care of her father's subjects. Her presence in the Palace had not been missed, for her Waiting Gentlewomen had by turns supplied her place; her reappearance in the world was the signal, throughout the duchy, for indescribable happiness. The Shepherd, turning from earthly love to heavenly, had moved steadfastly meanwhile towards perfection; so likewise had Messer Peregrino, following, through all these years, with a soul emancipate, desire unattainable and therefore immortal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wayside Songs: With Later Lyrics The lights and shades went racing Across the fields of rye, As the hopes and fears that tremble When Love himself is nigh. I call to mind the fancies, So idle, yet so dear, That fluttered round my heart, sweet, When you yourself drew near. A sunbeam on the meadows, A lily on the, stream, A sweet reality - and yet, The image of a dream. Time has not changed the fancies Of that remembered hour Whose bud of bliss has blossomed To true and perfect flower. And fortune grant the way, love, Our happy footsteps tend, Be sunny as the past, love, And sunny to the end. Download or read book Finishing the Hat written by Stephen Sondheim and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ONE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES 10 BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR • Titled after perhaps Stephen Sondheim's most autobiographical song, from Sunday in the Park with George—Finishing the Hat not only collects his lyrics for the first time, it offers readers a rare personal look into his life as well as his remarkable productions. Stephen Sondheim’s career spanned more than half a century; his lyrics are synonymous with musical theater and popular culture. Sondheim—the winner of seven Tonys, an Academy Award, seven Grammys, a Pulitzer Prize and more—treats us to never-before-published songs from each show, songs that were cut or discarded before seeing the light of day, along with the lyrics for all of his musicals from 1954 to 1981, including West Side Story, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd. He discusses his relationship with his mentor, Oscar Hammerstein II, and his collaborations with extraordinary talents such as Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents, Ethel Merman, Richard Rodgers, Angela Lansbury, Harold Prince and a panoply of others. The anecdotes—filled with history, pointed observations and intimate details—transport us back to a time when theater was a major pillar of American culture. Best of all, Sondheim appraises his work and dissects his lyrics, as well as those of others, offering unparalleled insights into songwriting that will be studied by fans and aspiring songwriters for years to come. Accompanying Sondheim’s sparkling writing are behind-the-scenes photographs from each production, along with handwritten music and lyrics from the songwriter’s personal collection. Penetrating and surprising, poignant, funny and sometimes provocative, Finishing the Hat is not only an informative look at the art and craft of lyric writing, it is a history of the theater that belongs on the same literary shelf as Moss Hart’s Act One and Arthur Miller’s Timebends. It is also a book that will leave you humming the final bars of Merrily We Roll Along, while eagerly anticipating the next volume.

Book Hymns Historically Famous Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hymns Historically Famous Classic Reprint written by Nicholas Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns Historically Famous The purpose of this volume is twofold: To in epire a warmer love of Church song; and to make the reader better acquainted with that class of hymns which are noted for the history they have made. The special aim has been to take the more popular and useful of our familiar compositions and give a fuller and more connected story of the lives of the authors, the origin of the hymns, with incidents of interest and value illustrating their influence, than have yet appeared in any annotated hymnal either in America or Great Britain. Twenty-three chapters are devoted to Church hymns and gospel songs which have two common characteristics universal popularity, and the power to make spiritual history. Many hymns are historic solely because their origin is closely related to some striking event, or associated with some hallowed experience; and the rule governing the scope of the book has been re laxed that a few of those having particular merit, might be annotated. The chapter - Five Lay Hymn Writers - was inserted for two important reasons First, the position those consecrated laymen occupy in Church hymnody in all English-speaking coun tries, is unique; and, second, the hymns selected from their writings and printed in these pages, are of great poetic beauty, and add much to the pleasure and profitof public worship. There are many favorite hymns which are perfect in form, exquisite in thought and expression, and which no doubt interpret charming Christian experiences, but not being connected with noteworthy historical facts, they could not properly find a place in this volume.
