Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of New-Sweden The first permanent settlement upon the hanks of the Delaware was made, as is well known, by the Swedes; and the whole country from the falls of the river (where now stands Trenton) to the capes was originally called New-Sweden. From the landing of Peter Minuit, in 1635, down to the time of William Penn (a period of nearly half a century) the language and customs of Sweden held almost exclusive sway along the Delaware. Now, save the old churches at Philadelphia and Wilmington, and the Swedish names which still dot the chart of the river, scarcely anything remains to tell the modern inquirer of a time which has almost escaped the pen of the legendary. Although the last four of these poems treat of events which occurred after the close of the Swedish dominion, and during the rule of the English, it has not seemed inappropriate to include them under one head with the others. Book excerpt: Songs from Sweden shows how Swedish songwriters and producers are the creative forces behind much of today’s international pop music. As Ola Johansson reveals, the roots of this “music miracle” can be found in Sweden’s culture, economy, and thriving music industry, concentrated in Stockholm. While Swedish writer-producers developed early global recognition for making commercially successful pop music, new Swedish writer-producers have continuously emerged during the last two decades. Global artists travel to Stockholm to negotiate, record, and co-write songs. At the same time, Swedish writer-producers are part of a global collaborative network that spans the world. In addition to concrete commercial accomplishments, the Swedish success is also a result of the acquisition of reputational capital gained through positive associations that the global music industry holds about Swedish music. Ultimately, pop songs from Sweden exhibit a form of cultural hybridity, drawing from both local and global cultural expressions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although it was the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware River valley, the New Sweden colony has long been ignored by American colonial historians. To right this omission, and to mark the 350th anniversary of the founding of the New Sweden colony, the University of Delaware sponsored an international conference, "New Sweden in America: Scandinavian Pioneers and Their Legacy" in March of 1988. This event brought together twenty-eight scholars from Sweden, Finland, and the United States who represented several fields, including history, anthropology, and geography. The conference papers, collected in New Sweden in America, present the first look at the New Sweden colony since the advent of modern historical methods." "The essays in this volume examine the economic and social lives of a political entity, as well as its political structures. The topics discussed include an examination of the European environment from which the colonial venture came, the colonists' relations with the Native Americans, and the Swedish and Finnish settlers' adaptation to colonial life. The essays depict seventeenth-century Sweden as it emerged from its traditional ways and isolation into the dynamic world of Western European international politics and trade, and the failed attempts to bring European mercantilist policies to New Sweden." "The fascinating stories of the trade between the Swedish and Dutch settlers and the Susquehannock and Lenni Lenape Indians, the development of pidgin languages to facilitate the trade, the devout Lutheran religious observations of the colonists, and the introduction of Finnish construction methods (especially the log cabin) are all described in this volume. To encourage further scholarship in this field, the contributors identify topics for future study and delineate where original colonial documents may be found on both sides of the Atlantic."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We tend to remember hymns one at a time. They color our lives, transmit our theology, and form our faith. We forget that the reason we can do so is because they have been made available throughout the centuries in hymnals. This edited collection explores the 500-year tradition of Lutheran hymnal production, illustrating how these books have influenced Lutheran faith and worship practice over time. Editor Robin A. Leaver has assembled a notable team of contributors from across the wider Lutheran church. Each chapter draws readers into the history and contributions of one or more landmark hymnals, ranging from the first books published during Luther's lifetime to volumes that have shaped the dimensions of the contemporary Lutheran church in the United States. Chapter authors include Leaver, Paul Grime, Markus Rathey, Joseph Hurl, Dianne M. McMullen, Jon D. Vieker, Paul Westermeyer, Mark A. Granquist, Daniel Zager, and Gracia Grindal.
