Book Songs My Mother Sang to Me

Download or read book Songs My Mother Sang to Me written by Patricia Preciado Martin and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1992-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivated by a love of her Mexican American heritage, Patricia Preciado Martin set out to document the lives and memories of the women of her mother's and grandmother's eras; for while the role of women in Southwest has begun to be chronicled, that of Hispanic women largely remains obscure. In Songs My Mother Sang to Me, she has preserved the oral histories of many of these women before they have been lost or forgotten. Martin's quest took her to ranches, mining towns, and cities throughout southern Arizona, for she sought to document as varied an experience of the contributions of Mexican American women as possible. The interviews covered family history and genealogy, childhood memories, secular and religious traditions, education, work and leisure, environment and living conditions, rites of passage, and personal values. Each of the ten oral histories reflects not only the spontaneity of the interview and personality of each individual, but also the friendship that grew between Martin and her subjects. Songs My Mother Sang to Me collects voices not often heard and brings to print accounts of social change never previously recorded. These women document more than the details of their own lives; in relating the histories of their ancestors and communities, they add to our knowledge of the culture and contributions of Mexican American people in the Southwest.

Book excerpt: FormerUSA Todaycolumnist Kristin Clark Taylor has put together a love song to African American mothers. As she writes in the Introduction: "to any mother who ever kissed a scraped knee; broke up a playground fight; spent part of the rent money on a pair of badly needed Buster Browns; preserved a memory; instilled in her young one an everlasting image of racial pride; or encouraged in her child imaginative, courageous thinking...To black mothers everywhere who guided our feet and showered us with an unconditional love that has sustained our spirit, enriched our lives, opened our hearts and kept us strong. To the heroic black mothers who have withstood pain and indignity, suffering and sacrifice--all for the good of their children--this book praises your existence and your memory." In nine finely hewn chapters filled with quotes, poems, and vintage photographs, the black mother is seen in her many roles: "Giver of Life," "Spiritual Anchor," "Disciplinarian," "Wise Teacher," "Provider and Comforter," "Image of Beauty," "Loving Surrogate," and finally "Keeper of the Flame." Book excerpt: Not too far away from the flea markets, dusty attics, cluttered used record stores and Ebay is the world of the vinyl junkies. Brett Milano dives deep into the piles of old vinyl to uncover the subculture of record collecting. A vinyl junkie is not the person who has a few old 45s shoved in the cuboard from their days in high school. Vinyl Junkies are the people who will travel over 3,000 miles to hear a rare b-side by a German band that has only recorded two songs since 1962, vinyl junkies are the people who own every copy of every record produced by the favorite artist from every pressing and printing in existance, vinyl junkies are the people who may just love that black plastic more than anything else in their lives. Brett Milano traveled the U.S. seeking out the most die-hard and fanatical collectors to capture all that it means to be a vinyl junkie. Includes interviews with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Peter Buck from R.E.M and Robert Crumb, creator of Fritz the cat and many more underground comics.
