Book excerpt: After two years hunched over her laptop at home, Deanna Spenser is finally back in the office, albeit only for three days a week, and predictably, she hates it. Driven by a deep desire for change, a yearning to not go back to the way things were before coronavirus, she finds herself consumed by memories of adolescence, of a friend lost to the past. Abruptly, she is offered a chance to reconnect with her friend. Yet as the past opens up before her, she finds herself wondering if perhaps there are things that should not be revisited after all.

Book I Love Rock n Roll Except When I Hate It

Download or read book I Love Rock n Roll Except When I Hate It written by Brian Boone and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-08-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music breeds duality. We enjoy the music we love-listening to it, talking about it, reading about it. But it's just as fun to passionately revel in mocking the music we hate. Fortunately, musicians make this two-lane path very easy to follow. Half the time they're creating timeless works of art that speak to the soul; the other half, they're recording ridiculous concept albums about robots. I Love Rock 'n' Roll (Except When I Hate It) covers both sides: It celebrates the music world's flashes of genius, the creation of masterpieces, and the little-known stories...as well as the entertainingly bad ideas. Armed with a healthy dose of Brian Boone's humorous asides and lively commentary, you'll learn extremely important stuff like: ? How bands got their stupid names ? All alternative rock bands directly descend from Pixies ? The most metal facts of metal in the history of metal ? The secret lives of one-hit wonders ? The story behind "Layla," and other assorted love songs about George Harrison's wife ? What is quite possibly the worst song in rock history Boone also reveals terribly useful information like chart trivia, the rules of music, lists, and many more origins, meanings, and stories about everyone's most loved and loathed musicians.

Book excerpt: Women write about their experiences of loving music that doesn’t love them back – a feminist 'guilty pleasures'.e - a kind of feminist guilty pleasures. In the majority of mainstream writing and discussions on music, women appear purely in relation to men as muses, groupies or fangirls, with our own experiences, ideas and arguments dismissed or ignored. But this hasn’t stopped generations of women from loving, being moved by and critically appreciating music, even – and sometimes especially – when we feel we shouldn’t. Under My Thumb: Songs that Hate Women and the Women Who Love Them is a study of misogyny in music through the eyes of women. It brings together stories from journalists, critics, musicians and fans about artists or songs we love (or used to love) despite their questionable or troubling gender politics, and looks at how these issues interact with race, class and sexuality. As much celebration as critique, this collection explores the joys, tensions, contradictions and complexities of women loving music – however that music may feel about them. Featuring: murder ballads, country, metal, hip hop, emo, indie, Phil Spector, David Bowie, Guns N’ Roses, 2Pac, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, AC/DC, Elvis Costello, Jarvis Cocker, Kanye West, Swans, Eminem, Jay-Z, Taylor Swift, Combichrist and many more.

Book The Demons of Leonard Cohen

Download or read book The Demons of Leonard Cohen written by Francis Mus and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With my jingle in your brain, Allow the Bridge to arch again" How are we to understand Leonard Cohen’s plea? Who speaks to whom in this oeuvre spanning six decades? In search of an answer to this question this study considers the different guises or “demons” that the Canadian singer-songwriter adopts. The countless roles assumed by Cohen’s personas are not some innocent game, but strategies in response to the sometimes conflicting demands of a “life in art”: they serve as masks that represent the performer’s face and state of mind in a heightened yet detached way. In and around the artistic work they are embodied by different guises and demons: image (the poser), artistry (the writer and singer), alienation (the stranger and the confidant), religion (the worshipper, prophet, and priest), and power (the powerful and powerless). Ultimately, Cohen’s artistic practice can be read as an attempt at forging interpersonal contact. The wide international circulation of Cohen’s work has resulted in a partial severing with the context of its creation. Much of it has filtered through the public image forged by the artist and his critics in concerts, interviews, and reflective texts. Less a biography than a reception study—supplemented with extensive archival research, unpublished documents, and interviews with colleagues and privileged witnesses—it sheds new light on the dynamic of a comprehensive body of work spanning a period of sixty years. Published in English.

Book excerpt: I've tried to like Adrian Savage, the mercurial frontman for Fugitive Summer, while serving as his band's opening act on tour. We're stuck together for three months, after all. And I'm well aware I'm lucky to be here. But it's proved impossible. He's far too rude and dismissive a guy to get along with. And way too good at getting under my skin. In fact, at this point, I think it's fair to say I downright hate his guts. Global thirst trap that he is, though, I'm finding it extremely difficult not to want to jump Savage's bones, despite how much he infuriates me. I hate myself for it. But my body is going rogue on me. It doesn't matter, though. I'm determined to resist him. In fact, what I've decided is that, as long as I'm here and stuck with him, I'm not only going to give Savage the sound tongue lashing nobody else around here has the balls to deliver, I'm going to bring that bad boy to his knees. Savage: I'm obsessed with Laila Fitzgerald. There, I finally admitted it. I've tried not to want her. I tried to step aside when my best friend said he wanted her. But it's proved impossible. She's too gorgeous and talented, too charismatic and badass, for me not to want her for myself. Unfortunately, though, karma's a bitch. In trying to do the right thing by my best friend, I've done the wrong thing by myself. I've pushed her away every chance I've had. Dug way too deep a hole to crawl out of . . . And now, Laila downright hates my guts. And rightly so. But since we're stuck together, yet again-and, this time, even more closely-I've decided nothing will stop me from getting what I want. This time, I'm going to figure out a way to coax Laila into falling out of hate with me . . . The Hate Love Duet is a bundle of two books: 1) Falling Out of Hate With You, and 2) Falling Into Love With You.
