Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic collection is a discussion of songs that gave utterance to the opinions and feelings of an important part of the Irish people in political, social, and religious feelings. First published in 1966, this is a new edition with corrections and additional notes. The songs, which were within the reach of all strands of society, were not only an expression of the singers' and listeners' feelings or opinions but also a form of propaganda. And when printers invested in them with the production of broadsheets and booklets, they became an industry. Thus, as the author states in his introduction, they are a curious melting pot for different kinds of literature or sub-literature.

Download or read book For All Their Wars Are Merry written by Declan Finn and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For all Their Wars Are Merry" is an examination of the uses and implications of songs in Irish terrorist organizations such as the IRA and all of their various and sundry splinter factions. Basically, it will examine why the Irish have these songs as such a widespread phenomenon, and what the songs tell us about these Irish terrorists. From songs like "My Little Armalite" to "Come out Ye Black and Tans," one gets the feeling that the IRA doesn't quite take their British opponents as seriously as one would think, given the amount of bombs and firepower the IRA and all of its mutations has thrown at them in their fight to have Northern Ireland united with the Republic of Ireland, or at least independent of the United Kingdom. Along the way, it will cover why the Irish terrorists have such songs, why they apologize for their atrocities, how Catholic they thing they are. It will trace these traditions going back back to the days of the Druidic Bards-Irish poets-of the early Celts some three thousand years ago, up to and including the poet Patrick Pearse in the 1916 Easter Uprising in Dublin.
Download or read book Sounding Dissent written by Stephen Millar and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The signing of the Good Friday Agreement on April 10, 1998, marked the beginning of a new era of peace and stability in Northern Ireland. As the public has overwhelmingly rejected a return to the violence of the Troubles (1968–1998), loyalist and republican groups have sought other outlets to continue their struggle. Music has long been used to celebrate cultural identity in the North of Ireland: from street parades to football chants, and from folk festivals to YouTube videos, music facilitates the continuation of pre-Agreement identity narratives in a “post-conflict” era. Sounding Dissent draws on original in-depth interviews with Irish republican musicians, contemporary audiences, and former paramilitaries, as well as diverse historical and archival material, including songbooks, prison records, and newspaper articles, to understand the history of political violence in Ireland. The book examines the hagiographic potential of rebel songs to memorialize a pantheon of republican martyrs, and demonstrates how musical performance and political song not only articulate experiences and memories of oppression and violence, but play a central role in the reproduction of conflict and exclusion in times of peace.
