Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manuscript of the Queen's Court: A Collection of Old Bohemian Lyrico-Epic Songs, With Other Ancient Bohemian Poems The poet then goes on to describe the ga thering together of the heroes by the brothers. Zaboj blesses the host. Their movements are all' recorded, and at every step the hard in troduces his word of promise, of counsel, or of vengeance. Zaboj himself takes a part in the fight, his blows are, said to fall in front of the fight like a hailstorm. There is a for cible description of the long-enduring battle and the progress of it. Zaboj is represented as endowed with super - human strength, able to fell a tree with a single stroke of his battle axe, destroying thirty enemies with his own hand, piercing his foes through at a distance of five fathoms, and following them without his shield with sword in hand a very grey hound in pursuit, a lynx in perception; yet in the midst of all preserving a great self possession, and exercising wonderful great mindedness towards the fallen. The ballad concludes with this song of the hard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Bohemian Legends and Other Poems Classic Reprint written by Flora Pauline Wilson Kopta and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bohemian Legends and Other Poems Tion, that history and heroism have furnished few sub jects for the Bohemian national songs, and, he says, is the more remarkable when they are compared or con trasted with those of other Slavonian races, especially the Servian and the Russian. But how should such songs exist - or rather if they ever existed, how should they be long preserved in a state of society where no man dares to be a Bohemian? That freedom of thought and expression which opens to the poet the great expanse of space and time - the whole field of the past and the future - which allows him to revel in all that is delight ful in recollection, and in all that is beautiful in anticipation - is denied to the minstrel of Bohemia. He may neither record the struggles of his ancestors for liberty, nor dream of the day when self-government shall give to his country whatever of happiness she is capable of enjoying. Love, of all the passions which he is permitted to sing, is that which allows the widest scope to his imagination - and love is the ever-ruling subject of his verse. And surely their popular poets have treated this subject with exquisite tenderness and effect. These are the opinions and words of two Englishmen, who trod before me thethorny path of Bohemian literature. Had their works been published in Austria, the same fate that met my book, Bohemian Legends and Ballads, would have met them. They would have been confiscated. Dr. John Bowring, speak ing of poor Hanka, says: It is to be hoped that no impediment will be thrown in his way, which one cannot but fear, from the arbitrary suppression of the fifth volume of his collection. It is not much to allow, that those who have no hope of the future may be permitted to indulge in the memories of the past. This sin I committed, and so my poor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Music of Bohemia It is the aim of this sketch to set forth the comparatively unfamiliar facts of the musical life of the Czechoslovaks, that people who for so long lived submerged, or, as the old Czech proverb has it, "mixed in the same bag with Germans and Hungarians." The various terms, Bohemian, Czech, Slovak, Czechoslovak, used in this book would probably puzzle an American reader if not defined; thus, to save the long historical and geographical explanations, we may be thoroughly assured by the fact that all these different names mean one nation only, that of the most western branch of the Slavic race in Europe. "Czech" is the Slav name for the Slav people and language in Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia. The terms used to designate the whole country, the state, are "Bohemia" and "Bohemian." The Czechs themselves do not employ this distinction, but use the word "Czech" in both senses. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author Kristin Hannah comes a powerful novel of love, loss, and the magic of friendship. . . . now a #1 Netflix series! In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her amazement, the "coolest girl in the world" moves in across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all---beauty, brains, ambition. On the surface they are as opposite as two people can be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at every turn. Tully, steeped in glamour and mystery, but with a secret that is destroying her. They make a pact to be best friends forever; by summer's end they've become TullyandKate. Inseparable. So begins Kristin Hannah's magnificent new novel. Spanning more than three decades and playing out across the ever-changing face of the Pacific Northwest, Firefly Lane is the poignant, powerful story of two women and the friendship that becomes the bulkhead of their lives. From the beginning, Tully is desperate to prove her worth to the world. Abandoned by her mother at an early age, she longs to be loved unconditionally. In the glittering, big-hair era of the eighties, she looks to men to fill the void in her soul. But in the buttoned-down nineties, it is television news that captivates her. She will follow her own blind ambition to New York and around the globe, finding fame and success . . . and loneliness. Kate knows early on that her life will be nothing special. Throughout college, she pretends to be driven by a need for success, but all she really wants is to fall in love and have children and live an ordinary life. In her own quiet way, Kate is as driven as Tully. What she doesn't know is how being a wife and mother will change her . . . how she'll lose sight of who she once was, and what she once wanted. And how much she'll envy her famous best friend. . . . For thirty years, Tully and Kate buoy each other through life, weathering the storms of friendship---jealousy, anger, hurt, resentment. They think they've survived it all until a single act of betrayal tears them apart . . . and puts their courage and friendship to the ultimate test. Firefly Lane is for anyone who ever drank Boone's Farm apple wine while listening to Abba or Fleetwood Mac. More than a coming-of-age novel, it's the story of a generation of women who were both blessed and cursed by choices. It's about promises and secrets and betrayals. And ultimately, about the one person who really, truly knows you---and knows what has the power to hurt you . . . and heal you. Firefly Lane is a story you'll never forget . . . one you'll want to pass on to your best friend.

Book Mad Music

Download or read book Mad Music written by Stephen Budiansky and published by ForeEdge. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mad Music is the story of Charles Edward Ives (1874Ð1954), the innovative American composer who achieved international recognition, but only after he'd stopped making music. While many of his best works received little attention in his lifetime, Ives is now appreciated as perhaps the most important American composer of the twentieth century and father of the diverse lines of Aaron Copland and John Cage. Ives was also a famously wealthy crank who made millions in the insurance business and tried hard to establish a reputation as a crusty New Englander. To Stephen Budiansky, Ives's life story is a personification of America emerging as a world power: confident and successful, yet unsure of the role of art and culture in a modernizing nation. Though Ives steadfastly remained an outsider in many ways, his life and times inform us of subjects beyond music, including the mystic movement, progressive anticapitalism, and the initial hesitancy of turn-of-the-century-America modernist intellectuals. Deeply researched and elegantly written, this accessible biography tells a uniquely American story of a hidden genius, disparaged as a dilettante, who would shape the history of music in a profound way. Making use of newly published lettersÑand previously undiscovered archival sources bearing on the longstanding mystery of Ives's health and creative declineÑthis absorbing volume provides a definitive look at the life and times of a true American original.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Future of Bohemia: A Lecture Delivered at King's College, London, in Honour of the Quincentenary of John Hus Ignorance of Bohemia has been a tradition in this country ever since the days when Shakespeare wrecked a certain famous ship upon its imaginary coasts. Yet in those days Bohemia still possessed an independent existence as one of the chief kingdoms of Christendom. By a still stranger confusion the word "Bohemian" has come to be associated with the Latin Quarter, and has thus acquired a peculiar, and a peculiarly misleading, flavour. It is right that in this year the memory of Bohemia should be revived, not merely because we hope that Bohemia may rise ph nix-like from the great European conflagration, but because the 6th of July serves to remind us of Bohemia's greatest citizen, and of Bohemia's greatest achievement in the history of Europe. On that day five hundred years ago, John Hus was burnt at the stake at the Council of Constance. Till very recently it was the fashion to deride things Slavonic, as uncivilized and barbarous.
