Download or read book The Renewal of Song written by Earl Roy Miner and published by Seagull Books Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2000 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literature begins. . . in lexically meaningless sounds and comes into being as lyric. . . The primacy of lyric in the emergence of literature confirms its role as the originative or foundation genre. . . [this] explains why that genre is especially important to consideration of literary rupture, endurance and renovation Earl Miner. With this bold bid for the primacy of lyric, Miner inaugurates an unusual volume which traverses the globe in its study of this vital cultural form. Lyric sustains by renewal. Some renewal comes from within, when a culture surges ahead, some again when a culture clashes with another culture. This book narrates both. The impulse for this volume comes from a telling insight that in issues of what has come to be known as Orientalism, the truly important subject is not the guilt of imperialists and their counterparts but the literatures ruptured. . . restriction of attention to guilty imperialism, eurocentricism and Orientalism still makes the west the subject. . . It is time to attend to other writers, other language, other canons and other conceptions of literature. . . we need to relocate the centre of interest to the scene of offence and to know the pre-colonial literatures ruptured by European incursion. Distinctive for its variety of approach, this volume features a truly international and multicultural authorship, and encompasses an extraordinary range of lyric conception and practise Chinese, Greek, Indian, Japanese and Korean. Earl Miner is a Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Princeton University and a past president of the International Comparative Literature Association. Founder chairman of the Committee on Intercultural Studies, he has taught, amongst other places, at Williams College, and UCLA. He has been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government for his promotion of Japanese culture. Amiya Dev was Professor of Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University and vice-chancellor of Vidyasagar University. He is vice-president of the International Comparative Literature Association, and has played a key role in developing the principal texts of Comparative Literature in India.

Book excerpt: In the twenties, thirties, and forties, now-legendary American songwriters and lyricists created a repertoire of popular songs, songs that have captured the hearts of generations of music lovers. George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael and many others, along with such lyricists as Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, and Dorothy Fields, produced extraordinary songs of signal importance to the American musical heritage. In this book Allen Forte shares his love of American popular song. He discusses in detail twenty-three songs, ranging from Gershwin’s “Fascinating Rhythm” (1924) to Irving Berlin’s “Steppin’ Out with My Baby” (1947), guiding readers and listeners toward a deeper appreciation of this vital and engaging music. Forte writes for the general reader, assuming no background other than a familiarity with basic music notation. Each song is discussed individually and includes complete lyrics and simple leadsheet notation. Forte discusses the songs’ distinctive musical features and their sophisticated, often touching and witty lyrics. Readers can follow the music while they listen to the accompanying compact disc, which was specially recorded for this volume by baritone Richard Lalli and pianist-arranger Gary Chapman, with Allen Forte, pianist-arranger for “Embraceable You” and “Come Rain or Come Shine”. Download or read book Scottish and Irish Romanticism written by Murray Pittock and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-01-24 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish and Irish Romanticism is the first single-author book to address the main non-English Romanticisms of the British Isles. Murray Pittock begins by questioning the terms of his chosen title as he searches for a definition of Romanticism and for the meaning of 'national literature'. He proposes certain determining 'triggers' for the recognition of the presence of a national literature, and also deals with two major problems which are holding back the development of a new and broader understanding of British Isles Romanticisms: the survival of outdated assumptions in ostensibly more modern paradigms, and a lack of understanding of the full range of dialogues and relationships across the literatures of these islands. The theorists whose works chiefly inform the book are Bakhtin, Fanon and Habermas, although they do not define its arguments, and an alertness to the ways in which other literary theories inform each other is present throughout the book. Pittock examines in turn the historiography, prejudices, and assumptions of Romantic criticism to date, and how our unexamined prejudices still stand in the way of our understanding of individual traditions and the dialogues between them. He then considers Allan Ramsay's role in song-collecting, hybridizing high cultural genres with broadside forms, creating in synthetic Scots a 'language really used by men', and promoting a domestic public sphere. Chapters 3 and 4 discuss the Scottish and Irish public spheres in the later eighteenth century, together with the struggle for control over national pasts, and the development of the cults of Romance, the Picturesque and Sentiment: Macpherson, Thomson, Owenson and Moore are among the writers discussed. Chapter 5 explores the work of Robert Fergusson and his contemporaries in both Scotland and Ireland, examining questions of literary hybridity across not only national but also linguistic borders, while Chapter 6 provides a brief literary history of Burns' descent into critical neglect combined with a revaluation of his poetry in the light of the general argument of the book. Chapter 7 analyzes the complexities of the linguistic and cultural politics of the national tale in Ireland through the work of Maria Edgeworth, while the following chapter considers of Scott in relation to the national tale, Enlightenment historiography, and the European nationalities question. Chapter 9 looks at the importance of the Gothic in Scottish and Irish Romanticism, particularly in the work of James Hogg and Charles Maturin, while Chapter 10, 'Fratriotism', explores a new concept in the manner in which Scottish and Irish literary, political and military figures of the period related to Empire.
