Book excerpt: HIS NAME IS DANTE. Dark. Talented. Beautiful. Star of the rock band Inferno. Rumored owner of the hot New Orleans nightspot Club Hell. Born of the Blood, then broken by an evil beyond imagination. HIS PAST IS A MYSTERY. F.B.I. Special Agent Heather Wallace has been tracking a sadistic serial murderer known as the Cross Country Killer, and the trail has led her to New Orleans, Club Hell, and Dante. But the dangerously attractive musician not only resists her investigation, he claims to be "nightkind": in other words, a vampire. Digging into his past for answers reveals little. A juvenile record a mile long. No social security number. No known birth date. In and out of foster homes for most of his life before being taken in by a man named Lucien DeNoir, who appears to guard mysteries of his own. HIS FUTURE IS CHAOS. What Heather does know about Dante is that something links him to the killer -- and she's pretty sure that link makes him the CCK's next target. Heather must unravel the truth about this sensual, complicated, vulnerable young man -- who, she begins to believe, may indeed be a vampire -- in order to finally bring a killer to justice. But Dante's past holds a shocking, dangerous secret, and once it is revealed not even Heather will be able to protect him from his destiny....

Book excerpt: The Songmaker's Chair tells of a Samoan family, the Aiga Sa Peseola, who have been in Auckland since the 1950s. Over three generations the family have intermarried with M ori and Pakeha to develop what they refer to as the Peseola Way. Central to that Way is the magnificent Polynesian exploration and settlement of the Pacific, and a songmaking tradition which Peseola Olaga, the family patriarch has inherited from his father. At the heart of the play is the love between Peseola Olaga and Malaga, his wife, and how they've struggled to give their children a good life in Aotearoa. For theirs is the Peseola Way: defiant, honest and unflinching even in the face of death.

Tananger, a mature bull gray whale is part of a round up in Scammons Lagoon in Baja California. Because of an extreme shortage of fossil fuels, David Parks, a "fluker", will ride in a pod on the back of the behemoth. The whale/man team head north into storming seas. They soon encounter a pirate trawler. A rogue wave, a luxurious pleasure yacht and a container ship carrying stolen toxic chemicals are drawn to a climactic point. The evil Chang Lee, leaves his Asian headquarters to take charge of an impending disaster. A strange congregation of whales pursues the pirates to Prince William Sound and then to College Fjord, the site of some of the largest glaciers in Alaska. David, Tananger and a group of Inuit fisherman confront the pirates inside the massive Harvard Glacier. The fight in ice caverns is soon brought to a halt by a major seismic disturbance a few miles off the entrance to the Sound and the threat of a tsunami looms large as fears mount of being trapped in the narrow fjord.

Book The Anthropology of Music

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alan P. Merriam
  • Publisher : Northwestern University Press
  • Release : 1964-12-01
  • ISBN : 9780810106079
  • Pages : 380 pages

Download or read book The Anthropology of Music written by Alan P. Merriam and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 1964-12-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this highly praised and seminal work, Alan Merriam demonstrates that music is a social behavior—one worthy and available to study through the methods of anthropology. In it, he convincingly argues that ethnomusicology, by definition, cannot separate the sound-analysis of music from its cultural context of people thinking, acting, and creating. The study begins with a review of the various approaches in ethnomusicology. He then suggests a useful and simple research model: ideas about music lead to behavior related to music and this behavior results in musical sound. He explains many aspects and outcomes of this model, and the methods and techniques he suggests are useful to anyone doing field work. Further chapters provide a cross-cultural round-up of concepts about music, physical and verbal behavior related to music, the role of the musician, and the learning and composing of music. The Anthropology of Music illuminates much of interest to musicologists but to social scientists in general as well.
