Download or read book Walls Borders Boundaries written by Marc Silberman and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it that walls, borders, boundaries--and their material and symbolic architectures of division and exclusion--engender their very opposite? This edited volume explores the crossings, permeations, and constructions of cultural and political borders between peoples and territories, examining how walls, borders, and boundaries signify both interdependence and contact within sites of conflict and separation. Topics addressed range from the geopolitics of Europe's historical and contemporary city walls to conceptual reflections on the intersection of human rights and separating walls, the memory politics generated in historically disputed border areas, theatrical explorations of border crossings, and the mapping of boundaries within migrant communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The broad spectrum of topics covered in the nine symposia and four open-paper sessions of the Third Inter national Wildlife Disease Conference comprise a remarkable collection of ideas and current research information on diseases of wildlife. The term "wildlife" is broad in itself and is interpreted by the Conference sponsor, The Wildlife Disease Association, to mean all free-living vertebrate and invertebrate members of the animal kingdom. The Conference's invitational symposia brought to Munich an array of wildlife specialists from around the world who addressed major problems affecting the under standing and control of diseases of wildlife. The open paper sessions attracted many well-known scientists with detailed data from their specialized studies. Over 100 participants were present to hear 84 scientific papers. The Wildlife Disease Association and the Conference editors, through their publisher, are pleased to offer this compilation of presentations as a Conference Pro ceedings. This volume will be an important data source for the study of diseases of wildlife by students, specialists, and general biologists everywhere. WDA President W. G. Winkler expresses the Associa tion's gratitude to the Conference Chairman, Prof. Dr. H.
Download or read book German as Contact Zone written by Russell West-Pavlov and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2019-09-09 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book suggests that linguistic translation is one minute province of an immense process of creative activity that constitutes the world as an ongoing dynamism of unceasing transformation. Building upon the speculative quantum gravity theory, which provides a narrative of the push-pull dynamics of transformative translation from the very smallest scales of reality to the very greatest, this book argues that the so-called translative turn of the 1990s was correct in positing translation as a paradigmatic concept of transformation. More radically, the book stages a provocative provincialization of linguistic translation, so that literary translation in particular is shown to display a remarkable awareness of its own participation in a larger creative contact zone. As a result, the German language, literary translations in and out of German, and the German-language classroom, can be understood respectively as quantum contact zones. Russell West-Pavlov is Professor of Anglophone Literatures at the University of Tübingen and Research Associate at the University of Pretoria.

Download or read book Airborne Wind Energy written by Uwe Ahrens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference offers an overview of the field of airborne wind energy. As the first book of its kind, it provides a consistent compilation of the fundamental theories, a compendium of current research and development activities as well as economic and regulatory aspects. In five parts, the book demonstrates the relevance of Airborne Wind Energy and the role that this emerging field of technology can play for the transition towards a renewable energy economy. Part I on "Fundamentals" contains seven general chapters explaining the principles of airborne wind energy and its different variants, of meteorology, the history of kites and financing strategies. Part II on "System Modeling, Optimization and Control" contains eight contributions that develop and use detailed dynamic models for simulation, optimization, and control of airborne wind energy systems, while Part III on "Analysis of Flexible Kite Dynamics" collects four chapters that focus on the particularly challenging simulation problems related to flexible kites. Part IV "Implemented Concepts" contains eleven contributions each of which presents developed prototypes together with real-world experimental results obtained with the different concepts. Finally, in Part V on "Component Design", five papers are collected that address in detail the technical challenges for some of the components of airborne wind energy. Airborne Wind Energy presents all basics in a single source to someone starting to explore wind power in the upper atmosphere and serves as a valuable reference for researchers, scientists, professionals and students active in the innovative field of Airborne Wind Energy.
Download or read book Redefining and Combating Poverty written by Council of Europe and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are at a point in history where economic inequalities are more widespread each day. The situation of extreme poverty experienced by the majority of the populations in developing countries ("Third World" countries) often coincides with an absence of democracy and the violation of the most fundamental rights. But in so-called "First World" countries a non-negligible proportion of inhabitants also live in impoverished conditions (albeit mainly "relative" poverty) and are denied their rights. The European situation, which this publication aims to analyse, is painful: the entire continent is afflicted by increasing poverty and consequently by the erosion of living conditions and social conflicts. The economic and financial crisis has resulted in the loss of millions of jobs, and created job insecurity for many still working. Economic insecurity raises social tensions, aggravating xenophobia, for instance. Yet the economic and financial crisis could present a good opportunity to rethink the economic and social system as a whole. Indeed, poverty in modern societies has never been purely a question of lack of wealth. It is therefore urgent today to devise a new discourse on poverty. In pursuit of this goal, the Council of Europe is following up this publication in the framework of the project "Human rights of people experiencing poverty", co-financed by the European Commission.

Download or read book The Power of Distributed Perspectives written by Günter Abel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do people and institutions manage to bring their different perspectives into an effective and productive interplay? How can we overcome obstacles for the creative potentials of distributed perspectives? Traditionally, the perspectives of people and institutions are considered to be fixed and isolated points of view. In such a picture, the perspectives seem determined in advance by positions and persons seem trapped within their perspectival horizons. In contrast, the new approach of this volume’s contributions focuses on the simple but fundamental fact that people (in their perceiving, speaking, thinking, and acting) always already refer to fellow human beings and coordinate their own perspectives with those of other persons and institutions. The contributions of the present volume concentrate on the structures, mechanisms, and dynamics of the interplays of different perspectives of interacting, communicating, and cooperating persons and institutions. The volume focuses on how the creative potentials as well as the organizational effectiveness of distributed perspectives can be set free.
