    Book Details:
  • Author : Jason Yust
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018
  • ISBN : 0190696486
  • Pages : 441 pages

Download or read book Organized Time written by Jason Yust and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized Time is the first attempt to unite theories of harmony, rhythm and meter, and form under a common idea of structured time. Building off of recent advances in music theory in essential subfields-rhythmic theory, tonal structure, and the theory of musical form--author Jason Yust demonstrates that tonal music exhibits similar hierarchical organization in each of these dimensions. Yust develops a network model for temporal structure with an application of mathematical graph theory, which leads ultimately to musical applications of a multi-dimensional polytope called the associahedron. A wealth of analytical examples includes not only the familiar tonal canon-J.S. Bach, Mozart, Schumann--but also lesser known masters of the musical Enlightenment such as C.P.E. and J.C. Bach, Boccherini, and Johann Gottlieb Graun. Yust's approach has wide-ranging ramifications across music theory, enabling new approaches to musical closure, hypermeter, formal function, syncopation, and rhythmic dissonance, as well as historical observations about the development of sonata form and the innovations of Haydn and Beethoven. Making a forceful argument for the independence of musical modalities and for a multivalent approach to music analysis, Organized Time establishes the aesthetic importance of structural disjunction, the conflict of structure in different modalities, in numerous analytical contexts.

Book A Wayfaring Stranger

  • Author : Veronika Kusz
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2020-01-21

  • Pages : 259 pages

Download or read book A Wayfaring Stranger written by Veronika Kusz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 10, 1948, world-renowned composer and pianist Ernst von Dohnányi (1877−1960) embarked for the United States, leaving Europe for good. Only a few years earlier, the seventy-year-old Hungarian had been a triumphant, internationally admired musician and leading figure in Hungarian musical life. Fleeing a political smear campaign that sought to implicate him in intellectual collaboration with fascism, he reached American shores without a job or a home. A Wayfaring Stranger presents the final period in Dohnányi’s exceptional career and uses a range of previously unavailable material to reexamine commonly held beliefs about the musician and his unique oeuvre. Offering insights into his life as a teacher, pianist, and composer, the book also considers the difficulties of émigré life, the political charges made against him, and the compositional and aesthetic dilemmas faced by a conservative artist. To this rich biographical account, Veronika Kusz adds an in-depth examination of Dohnányi’s late works—in most cases the first analyses to appear in musicological literature. This corrective history provides never-before-seen photographs of the musician’s life in the United States and skillfully illustrates Dohnányi’s impact on European and American music and the culture of the time.

Book B la Bart k

Download or read book B la Bart k written by Benjamin Suchoff and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview: This compilation of essays, lectures, and scholarly papers on Bartok studies from 1953 to the present includes insights obtained by the author over a half-century career as a Bartok specialist. Divided into three parts, chapters examine Bartok as a multifaceted music figure: composer, folklorist, pianist, and teacher. As composer, it includes program notes, an introduction to his principles of composition, and theoretic-analytical discussion of selected works, including Mikrokosmos. As folklorist, it examines the outcome of Bartok's fieldwork, methodology, and findings in East European, Arabic, and Turkist autochthonous folk music materials. Bartok's American years are also discussed. The narrative is supported by a substantial number of musical examples and references.

Book Beethoven

    Book Details:
  • Author : Barry Cooper
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2008-10-08
  • ISBN : 019046349X
  • Pages : 465 pages

Download or read book Beethoven written by Barry Cooper and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-08 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The connections between a great artist's life and work are subtle, complex, and often highly revealing. In the case of Beethoven, however, the standard approach has been to treat his life and his art separately. Now, Barry Cooper's new volume incorporates the latest international research on many aspects of the composer's life and work and presents these in a truly integrated narrative. Cooper employs a strictly chronological approach that enables each work to be seen against the musical and biographical background from which it emerged. The result is a much closer confluence of life and work than is usually achieved, for two reasons. First, composition was Beethoven's central preoccupation for most of his life: "I live entirely in my music," he once wrote. Second, recent study of his many musical sketches has enabled a much clearer picture of his everyday compositional activity than was previously possible, leading to rich new insights into the interaction between his life and music. This volume concentrates on Beethoven's artistic achievements both by examining the origins of his works and by expert commentary on some of their most striking and original features. It also reexamines virtually all the evidence--from fictitious anecdotes right down to the translations of individual German words--to avoid recycling old errors. And it offers numerous new details derived from sketch studies and a new edition of Beethoven's correspondence. Offering a wealth of fresh conclusions and intertwining life and work in illuminating ways, Beethoven will establish itself as the reference on one of the world's greatest composers.
