Book Sonar Estimation of Chum Salmon Passage in the Aniak River 2003

Download or read book Sonar Estimation of Chum Salmon Passage in the Aniak River 2003 written by Heath D. Sandall and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Aniak River sonar project has provided daily fish passage estimates for most years since 1980. During this time, the project has undergone important changes including changing from the original Bendix sonar to dual-beam and is in the process of migrating to a high frequency imaging sonar (DIDSON). This season, the project adopted a new sampling protocol in which the sonar operated for three 4-hour blocks each day (0000-0400, 0800-1200, and 1600-2000 hours). The Aniak River sonar project was operational from 28 June through 31 July in 2003. During this period, an estimated 393,396 fish (SE 7,871) passed through the ensonified area. The peak passage of 23,208 fish occurred on 14 July and the 50% passage date occurred on 17-July. The escapement estimate was primarily comprised of age-0.3 fish (80.6%), while age -0.4 (17.9%), -0.5 (1.1%) and -0.2 (0.4%) classes were also present. Side-by-side comparisons of counts obtained with the BioSonics and DIDSON equipment suggest undercounting with the BioSonics at high densities.

Download or read book Sonar Estimation of Chum Salmon Passage in the Aniak River 2002 written by Malcolm S. McEwen and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Aniak River sonar project provided daily estimates of fish passage from 26 June through 31 July, 2002. User-configurable sonar continuously sampled the entire width of the river between the transducers, except for short periods when equipment was moved or serviced. An estimated 362,812 fish passed through the ensonified area during the period of operation. The peak daily passage of 18,532 fish occurred on 17 July, and the 50% passage date occurred on 13 July. Age-0.4 and-0.5 chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta comprised an estimated 77% and 20% of the escapement estimate, respectively. A total of 2,939 fish, 85% of which were chum salmon, were captured at the site during a total of 662 drifts with gillnets.

Book Sonar Estimation of Chinook and Fall Chum Salmon Passage in the Yukon River Near Eagle Alaska 2011

Download or read book Sonar Estimation of Chinook and Fall Chum Salmon Passage in the Yukon River Near Eagle Alaska 2011 written by Elizabeth A. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reports on the results of using the Dual-Frequency Identification Sonar (DIDSON) and split-beam sonar equipment, which were used to estimate Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, and fall chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta, passage in the Yukon River near Eagle, Alaska from July 5 to October 6, 2011. This continued long-term hydroacoustic enumeration project for Chinook and chum salmon near the United States/Canada border will help fishery managers meet conservation and management commitments made by both countries under the Yukon River Salmon Agreement.

Book Sonar Estimation of Salmon Passage in the Yukon River Near Pilot Station 2011

Download or read book Sonar Estimation of Salmon Passage in the Yukon River Near Pilot Station 2011 written by Jody D. Lozori and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of a Yukon River sonar project, which provided estimates of Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, chum salmon O. keta, and coho salmon O. kisutch daily passage on the Yukon River near Pilot Station, Alaska. Fish passage estimates for each species were generated in 2011 through a two-component process: (1) estimation of total fish passage with 120 kHz split-beam sonar and a Dual Frequency Identification Sonar (DIDSON), and (2) apportionment to species by sampling with a suite of gillnets of various mesh sizes.

Book Sonar Estimation of Summer Chum Salmon Passage in the Anvik River Alaska 2015

Download or read book Sonar Estimation of Summer Chum Salmon Passage in the Anvik River Alaska 2015 written by Jody D. Lozori and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dual-frequency identification sonar (DIDSON) was used to estimate summer chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta passage in the Anvik River from June 17 to July 27, 2015. A total of 374,968 summer chum salmon were estimated to have passed the sonar site. A beach seine sample fishery was conducted to collect age, sex, and length (ASL) and genetic information. Both systems functioned well with minimal interruptions to operation. The range of ensonification was considered adequate for most fish that migrated upstream.

A total of 33,550 (SE 219) Chinook salmon were estimated to have passed the sonar site from July 1 through August 27. The midpoint of the Chinook salmon migration occurred on July 29, which was 5 days later than the historical mean date. A total of 20,766 (SE 177) fall chum salmon were estimated to have passed the sonar site from August 28 through October 6. The fall chum salmon passage estimate was subsequently expanded to a total of 23,512 to include fish that may have passed after operations ceased. The midpoint of the fall chum salmon migration (based on the expanded estimate) occurred on September 24, which was 1 day later than the historical mean date. Drift gillnetting was conducted to collect age, sex, and length samples and tissue samples for genetic information. Species composition was analyzed to determine when the Chinook salmon migration ended and the fall chum salmon migration began.
