Book Son of Entropy 2

Download or read book Son of Entropy 2 written by Peter C. Mayer and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-08-08 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Their son, mostly for fun, writes this collection of vignettes about two prominent scientists. The forward includes a description of the two, summarizing their character and their careers. The summary contains an explanation of the title, Entropy Squared. The forward ends with remarks about the accuracy of the vignettes. Some vignettes include a representation of the impact on the son and some have historical significance. The first two sections concern Gttingen, Germany, from where that American, Joe, as a fellow student put it, acquired his wife. The first section of Gttingen vignettes is from the time of meeting and from visits until World War II. The second is from after the War. Marias career at Sarah Lawrence College separates sections of their supporting the World War II war effort, Joe at the Ballistics Research Laboratory of Aberdeen Proving Grounds and Maria with the Manhattan, nuclear bomb, Project. The Sarah Lawrence College section goes beyond memories because biographers have said little about Marias time at Sarah Lawrence. Sections concerning each are followed by a section on Maria receiving of the Nobel Prize. The conclusion is a memorial to Joe.

Book The Geometry of Musical Rhythm

Download or read book The Geometry of Musical Rhythm written by Godfried T. Toussaint and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geometry of Musical Rhythm: What Makes a "Good" Rhythm Good? is the first book to provide a systematic and accessible computational geometric analysis of the musical rhythms of the world. It explains how the study of the mathematical properties of musical rhythm generates common mathematical problems that arise in a variety of seemingly disparate fields. For the music community, the book also introduces the distance approach to phylogenetic analysis and illustrates its application to the study of musical rhythm. Accessible to both academics and musicians, the text requires a minimal set of prerequisites. Emphasizing a visual geometric treatment of musical rhythm and its underlying structures, the author—an eminent computer scientist and music theory researcher—presents new symbolic geometric approaches and often compares them to existing methods. He shows how distance geometry and phylogenetic analysis can be used in comparative musicology, ethnomusicology, and evolutionary musicology research. The book also strengthens the bridge between these disciplines and mathematical music theory. Many concepts are illustrated with examples using a group of six distinguished rhythms that feature prominently in world music, including the clave son. Exploring the mathematical properties of good rhythms, this book offers an original computational geometric approach for analyzing musical rhythm and its underlying structures. With numerous figures to complement the explanations, it is suitable for a wide audience, from musicians, composers, and electronic music programmers to music theorists and psychologists to computer scientists and mathematicians. It can also be used in an undergraduate course on music technology, music and computers, or music and mathematics.

In limbo, the Ghost Roads are crumbling, becoming weak and unstable where Hell and the Otherworld have begun seeping in, blurring the passages that lead to the human world. And Xander lies mortally wounded from a failed attempt to free Joyce Summers from the clutches of the zealots who hold her hostage. With the Gatekeeper rapidly weakening, Buffy sends Willow and Cordelia to escort Xander along the Ghost Roads to the Gatehouse, which may hold his only hope of survival. Meanwhile, she, Giles, and an unlikely band of allies take their fight to the very mouth of Hell itself, desperately hoping to save Joyce and repel the evil spawn before Sunnydale becomes a demonic ground zero. Only then can Buffy safeguard the Gatekeeper's eleven-year-old heir, the only one able to prevent the ultimate destruction of humanity.

Book Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics

Download or read book Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics written by Robert J. Hardy and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-06-23 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics An Integrated Approach This textbook brings together the fundamentals of the macroscopic and microscopic aspects of thermal physics by presenting thermodynamics and statistical mechanics as complementary theories based on small numbers of postulates. The book is designed to give the instructor flexibility in structuring courses for advanced undergraduates and/or beginning graduate students and is written on the principle that a good text should also be a good reference. The presentation of thermodynamics follows the logic of Clausius and Kelvin while relating the concepts involved to familiar phenomena and the modern student’s knowledge of the atomic nature of matter. Another unique aspect of the book is the treatment of the mathematics involved. The essential mathematical concepts are briefly reviewed before using them, and the similarity of the mathematics to that employed in other fields of physics is emphasized. The text gives in-depth treatments of low-density gases, harmonic solids, magnetic and dielectric materials, phase transitions, and the concept of entropy. The microcanonical, canonical, and grand canonical ensembles of statistical mechanics are derived and used as the starting point for the analysis of fluctuations, blackbody radiation, the Maxwell distribution, Fermi-Dirac statistics, Bose-Einstein condensation, and the statistical basis of computer simulations.

Book Generalised Thermostatistics

Download or read book Generalised Thermostatistics written by Jan Naudts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The domain of non-extensive thermostatistics has been subject to intensive research over the past twenty years and has matured significantly. Generalised Thermostatistics cuts through the traditionalism of many statistical physics texts by offering a fresh perspective and seeking to remove elements of doubt and confusion surrounding the area. The book is divided into two parts - the first covering topics from conventional statistical physics, whilst adopting the perspective that statistical physics is statistics applied to physics. The second developing the formalism of non-extensive thermostatistics, of which the central role is played by the notion of a deformed exponential family of probability distributions. Presented in a clear, consistent, and deductive manner, the book focuses on theory, part of which is developed by the author himself, but also provides a number of references towards application-based texts. Written by a leading contributor in the field, this book will provide a useful tool for learning about recent developments in generalized versions of statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, especially with respect to self-study. Written for researchers in theoretical physics, mathematics and statistical mechanics, as well as graduates of physics, mathematics or engineering. A prerequisite knowledge of elementary notions of statistical physics and a substantial mathematical background are required.
