Book Prehistory in the Pacific Islands

Download or read book Prehistory in the Pacific Islands written by John Terrell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How, asks John Terrell in this richly illustrated and original book, can we best account for the remarkable diversity of the Pacific Islanders in biology, language, and custom? Traditionally scholars have recognized a simple racial division between Polynesians, Micronesians, Melanesians, Australians, and South-east Asians: peoples allegedly differing in physical appearance, temperament, achievements, and perhaps even intelligence. Terrell shows that such simple divisions do not fit the known facts and provide little more than a crude, static picture of human diversity.

Book excerpt: Inspired by the true story of John F. Kennedy's daring naval mission at the height of World War II, this historical thriller brings the unanswered question of the past to life with fast-paced action and vivid detail. After surviving a near suicidal mission on Mondo Mondo Island, Lieutenant Commander Todd Ingram is sent back to the States on a thirty-day leave-but the war waits for no one, and trouble is already rippling through the Pacific Theater. Fresh from Stateside training, Lieutenant JG John Kennedy takes command of the PT 109, a torpedo boat in desperate need of repairs, for the upcoming mission to retake the Western Solomon Islands. But the war isn't the only thing on Kennedy's mind: he's torn between his family's expectations and his forbidden love for Inga Arvad, a beautiful Danish columnist who narrowly escaped Nazi occupied Germany. When a disastrous attempt to interrupt Japanese supply lines slices Kennedy's PT 109 in half, Ingram and his six destroyers must pick up where Kennedy left off. Can Ingram save Kennedy and his stranded men while defeating the Japanese? Ingram is prepared to fight to the end, but victory comes at a steep price behind enemy lines... In this 7th Installment, Todd Ingram reflects back on a simpler time, when he was on leave but the war was not. This is the story of what happened during his 39 day leave following When Duty Whispers Low, and takes place between When Duty Whispers Low and The Neptune Strategy. _____________________ "John Gobbell tells Navy tales like no other writer. Here, he combines historical facts, reasonable conjecture and authentic Navy culture and language to bring a new flavor to the epic story of PT-109, its famous skipper and the woman who captivated him. It is an enlightening and entertaining visit to the danger, discomfort and drama of the South Pacific at war." -Admiral Eric Olson, U.S. Navy (Retired), Former Commander, U.S. Special Operations Command "From John Gobbell's preface, to the last revealing page, Somewhere in the South Pacific is a riveting, entertaining, and historical page turner. This Todd Ingram series is well researched and an engaging must read." -Howard G. Book Somewhere in the South Pacific

Download or read book Somewhere in the South Pacific written by Annette Jolliff Johnson and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 7, 1941, the United States of America was drawn into a world war that was to change the lives of every American - those who lived through that era and for generations after. Much has been written about the history of World War II. This true story takes place during those war years, but it is not a story about the war. This is above all a love story. It tells the story of one man, his wife and their family who survived the uncertainty of a world at war, hardship and long separation with marriage and love still in tact. It is a celebration of courage, commitment and devotion. It might be the story of many "ordinary" men and women who were profoundly affected by the events of their time, their bravery and the amazing ability to survive "the worst of times" with hope. The foundation for the telling of their story is approximately 250 letters written by Harold Jolliff to his wife, Deloris, during the years of Word War II while he was serving in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. The letters will allow you to become acquainted with Harold and Deloris and share their love story in a very special way. A chronology of war events along with Deloris' experiences at home and the reprint of many of Harold's letters creates a from beginning to end story line which will hold your interest as you share their lives.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling official companion book to the Emmy® Award-winning HBO® miniseries. Between America's retreat from China in late November 1941 and the moment General MacArthur's airplane touched down on the Japanese mainland in August of 1945, five men connected by happenstance fought the key battles of the war against Japan. From the debacle in Bataan, to the miracle at Midway and the relentless vortex of Guadalcanal, their solemn oaths to their country later led one to the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot and the others to the coral strongholds of Peleliu, the black terraces of Iwo Jima and the killing fields of Okinawa, until at last the survivors enjoyed a triumphant, yet uneasy, return home. In The Pacific, Hugh Ambrose focuses on the real-life stories of five men who put their lives on the line for our country. To deepen the story revealed in the HBO® miniseries and go beyond it, the book dares to chart a great ocean of enmity known as the Pacific and the brave men who fought.

Book Stars and Stripes Across the Pacific

Download or read book Stars and Stripes Across the Pacific written by William Nimmo and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-09-30 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 19th century, the United States began a period of increased engagement in the Western Pacific--a situation that continues to this day. Nimmo provides a study of U.S. diplomatic, economic, and military relations with the nations of East Asia and the Pacific from the late 1800s to 1945. In addition to interaction with China, Korea, and Japan, the book includes U.S. involvement in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, and the Philippines. This one-volume treatment, ranging from the Spanish American War to the Second World War, examines the continuity in U.S. policy during this crucial period. Particular attention is devoted to the U.S. response to Japan's territorial aggression during this period, primarily its undeclared wars against China, in Manchuria in 1931, and in North and Central China from 1937 to 1945. This examination counters revisionist claims that the United States led Japan into war in 1941 and that war could have been avoided by the pursuit of a more conciliatory policy on the part of the U.S. It explores why it was necessary for the U.S. to demand unconditional surrender and refutes claims that Japan was a victim of the war. The acquisition of U.S. territory in the Pacific initially began with the annexation of Hawaii and continued with the former possessions of Spain, ceded in the Spanish American War. Nimmo follows this story through the Philippine War, efforts to promote Philippine independence, the Commonwealth era, and finally independence in 1946.

Book Mothers Darlings of the South Pacific

Download or read book Mothers Darlings of the South Pacific written by Judith A. Bennett and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of World War II, two million American military personnel occupied bases throughout the South Pacific, leaving behind a human legacy of at least 4,000 children born to indigenous mothers. Based on interviews conducted with many of these American-indigenous children and several of the surviving mothers, Mothers’ Darlings of the South Pacific explores the intimate relationships that existed between untold numbers of U.S. servicemen and indigenous women during the war and considers the fate of their mixed-race children. These relationships developed in the major U.S. bases of the South Pacific Command, from Bora Bora in the east across to Solomon Islands in the west, and from the Gilbert Islands in the north to New Zealand, in the southernmost region of the Pacific. The American military command carefully managed interpersonal encounters between the sexes, applying race-based U.S. immigration law on Pacific peoples to prevent marriage “across the color line.” For indigenous women and their American servicemen sweethearts, legal marriage was impossible; giving rise to a generation of fatherless children, most of whom grew up wanting to know more about their American lineage. Mothers’ Darlings of the South Pacific traces these children’s stories of loss, emotion, longing, and identity—and of lives lived in the shadow of global war. Each chapter discusses the context of the particular island societies and shows how this often determined the ways intimate relationships developed and were accommodated during the war years and beyond. Oral histories reveal what the records of colonial governments and the military have largely ignored, providing a perspective on the effects of the U.S. occupation that until now has been disregarded by Pacific war historians. The richness of this book will appeal to those interested the Pacific, World War II, as well as intimacy, family, race relations, colonialism, identity, and the legal structures of U.S. immigration.
