Shortly after, in another area, I donned a fire suit and breathing apparatus and walked into a flaming building looking for trapped people and ended up rescuing a firefighter who had fallen. Later in the day I went to a house to collect a dead body and took it to the local morgue... " This is a normal day for New Zealander Marko Cunningham, the only foreigner to work as a volunteer ambulance officer or 'bodysnatcher' in Bangkok, Thailand. Plus - an array of digital resources provides even more choice and flexibility. Students can learn in the classroom or on the move with Online Practice. language assessment. The first goal is to explore the difference between fairness and justice in language assessment. The authors distinguish internal and external dimensions of the equitable and just treatment of individuals taking language tests which are used as gatekeeping devices to determine access to education and employment, immigrant status, citizenship, and other rights. The second goal is to show how the extent of test fairness can be demonstrated and improved using the tools of psychometrics, in particular the models collectively known as Rasch measurement. “This book will have an enormous impact on the field of language assessment. Using Rasch analysis models to explore and identify sources of unfairness, the authors make a compelling case for fairness in the design and implementation of language assessment instruments and for justice in the interpretation and use of test results. A real strength of the book is that it guides readers through analytical techniques in an accessible way.” Dan Douglas, Professor Emeritus, Applied Linguistics Program, Iowa State University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurobiology of Sleep and Memory is the textual result of a symposium regarding the basic neurological processes in the storage of different kinds of memories (short-term and long-term). This book gives much focus on the relationship of sleep and memory and how they preserve personality and all its characteristics. The study of the interrelation of the two bodily processes also aims to help clarify neurological bases of disorders of sleep and memory and other forms of mental illness. This text consists of 23 chapters that encompass a wide span of topics regarding sleep and memory. Some of these topics include blood-brain barrier; protein synthesis in RNA and central nervous system; neuronal activity patterns during REM sleep; post-trial reticular stimulation; and sleep-related hormones. This book also discusses the phylogenetic correlations of sleep and memory not just in mammals but also in reptiles, amphibians, fishes, and birds. This reference material is a valuable source of information to both students and professionals studying biology, psychology, pharmacology, and neuroscience.

Book For Brotherhood Duty

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brian R. McEnany
  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky
  • Release : 2015-04-07
  • ISBN : 0813160642
  • Pages : 360 pages

Download or read book For Brotherhood Duty written by Brian R. McEnany and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A moving tribute to the first class of cadets that graduated into the cauldron of the Civil War . . . honors the service of all the Army ‘regulars.’” —America’s Civil War During the tense months leading up to the American Civil War, the cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point continued their education even as the nation threatened to dissolve around them. Students from both the North and South struggled to understand events such as John Brown’s Raid, the secession of eleven states from the Union, and the attack on Fort Sumter. By graduation day, half the class of 1862 had resigned; only twenty-eight remained, and their class motto—”Joined in common cause” —had been severely tested. In For Brotherhood & Duty, Brian R. McEnany follows the cadets from their initiation, through coursework, and on to the battlefield, focusing on twelve Union and four Confederate soldiers. Drawing heavily on primary sources, McEnany presents a fascinating chronicle of the young classmates, who became allies and enemies during the largest conflict ever undertaken on American soil. Their vivid accounts provide new perspectives not only on legendary battles such as Antietam, Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, and the Overland and Atlanta campaigns, but also on lesser-known battles such as Port Hudson, Olustee, High Bridge, and Pleasant Hills. There are countless studies of West Point and its more famous graduates, but McEnany’s groundbreaking book brings to life the struggles and contributions of its graduates as junior officers and in small units. Generously illustrated with more than one hundred photographs and maps, this enthralling collective biography illuminates the war’s impact on a unique group of soldiers and the institution that shaped them.
