Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. King’s best-selling account of the civil rights movement in Birmingham during the spring and summer of 1963 On April 16, 1963, as the violent events of the Birmingham campaign unfolded in the city’s streets, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., composed a letter from his prison cell in response to local religious leaders’ criticism of the campaign. The resulting piece of extraordinary protest writing, “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” was widely circulated and published in numerous periodicals. After the conclusion of the campaign and the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, King further developed the ideas introduced in the letter in Why We Can’t Wait, which tells the story of African American activism in the spring and summer of 1963. During this time, Birmingham, Alabama, was perhaps the most racially segregated city in the United States, but the campaign launched by King, Fred Shuttlesworth, and others demonstrated to the world the power of nonviolent direct action. Often applauded as King’s most incisive and eloquent book, Why We Can’t Wait recounts the Birmingham campaign in vivid detail, while underscoring why 1963 was such a crucial year for the civil rights movement. Disappointed by the slow pace of school desegregation and civil rights legislation, King observed that by 1963—during which the country celebrated the one-hundredth anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation—Asia and Africa were “moving with jetlike speed toward gaining political independence but we still creep at a horse-and-buggy pace.” King examines the history of the civil rights struggle, noting tasks that future generations must accomplish to bring about full equality, and asserts that African Americans have already waited over three centuries for civil rights and that it is time to be proactive: “For years now, I have heard the word ‘Wait!’ It rings in the ear of every Negro with piercing familiarity. This ‘Wait’ has almost always meant ‘Never.’ We must come to see, with one of our distinguished jurists, that ‘justice too long delayed is justice denied.’”

Book Waiting For Something to Happen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÿ Athol Varley already had a pilot?s licence when he joined the RAF in 1941, but his eyesight precluded him from flying in combat. Instead a disappointed Athol spent much of the war bored, frustrated and dreaming of his sweetheart, the woman with whom he would spend the rest of his life. His diary records no heroic escapes or acts of bravery, but portrays an ordinary young man who was keen to serve his country but grew increasingly disillusioned with his lack of involvement in a war that seemed remote. Having too much time on his hands allowed him to write many letters and diary entries about his thoughts and feelings. The result is an interesting insight into the hopes, fears and attitudes of the war years. Athol Varley?s diaries have been collated and edited by his daughter, Adrienne de Mont.

Book excerpt: The thrilling third novel starring London psychotherapist-turned-detective Frieda Klein—from internationally bestselling author Nicci French Nicci French’s Blue Monday and Tuesday’s Gone introduced the brilliant yet reclusive psychotherapist Frieda Klein to widespread critical acclaim, but Waiting for Wednesday promises to be her most haunting case yet. Ruth Lennox, housewife and mother of three, is found dead in a pool of her own blood. Detective Chief Inspector Karlsson can’t piece together a motive and calls in Frieda, hoping her talents will offer a new angle on the case. When it emerges that the mother was hiding a scandalous secret, her family closes ranks. Frieda herself is distracted, still reeling from an attempt on her life, and struggling with her own rare feelings of vulnerability. Then a patient’s chance remark sends Frieda down a dangerous path that seems to lead to a serial killer who’s long escaped detection. Is Frieda getting closer to unraveling either case? Or is she just the victim of her own paranoid, fragile mind? Because, as Frieda knows, every step closer to a killer is one more step into a darkness from which there may be no return . . . Flawlessly executed, Waiting for Wednesday is a penetrating, twisted novel of murder and neurosis with a jaw-dropping climax that will linger in readers’ minds long after they have turned the last page.

Book Waiting for Zo

Download or read book Waiting for Zo written by James R. Ament and published by Hugo House Publishers, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A sweeping novel of love and loss, city and country, growing old and staying young. Waiting for Zoë is a thoughtful look at the ability of grown men and young women to confront change and absorb life's most challenging moments," writes Mark Stevens, author of Antler Dust: An Allison Coil Mystery. Waiting for Zoë is a genre-bending character driven, mainstream novel that explores a person’s ability to endure in the face of tragedy—and love. James R. Ament says, “It’s a love story, but it’s not a romance. There are underlying religious themes, but it’s not a philosophical book. There’s a little political commentary here and there, but it’s not about politics. It explores some very serious themes, but there are light moments and humor, too.” Set in Wyoming, Colorado, New York City, and Southern California, it makes the reader ask the hard question: who is in charge of creating ourselves? Ament says, “I had this story in mind about a young person who apparently has everything going for her, but then her life falls apart. The question is: Does she get it back? And if so, how?” And from writer Stephen Knapp, Evergreen Newspapers. “The characters are sharply defined and appealing, and the dialogue flows smoothly and moves the narrative along at a comfortable pace. The settings and situations are neither contrived nor trite, and the conflicts are at once challenging and accessible. In short, there’s nothing within Waiting for Zoë that marks its author as a newcomer to the literary stage,”(Reprinted with permission of Evergreen Newspapers).

Longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize In his mid-thirties, Joe works as an advertising copywriter for a slick New York agency. But he feels disillusioned with his life, and finds himself experiencing dreams about a mysterious man, seeing him on the street, hearing his voice. Joe decides to listen. So he waits on his stoop, day and night, for instructions. A local reporter takes notice, and soon Joe has become a media sensation, the center of a storm. When the Man tells Joe to “go west,” he does. What follows is a compelling and visceral story about the struggle to find something more in life, told in two interwoven threads—Joe at the beginning of his journey in Manhattan, and at the end of it as he finds new purpose on a ranch in Montana under the endless sky. “A strangely engrossing, meticulously written allegory of the present moment.” —Douglas Coupland, author of Worst. Person. Ever.
