Book excerpt: Selected by a poll of more than 180 Gothic specialists (creative writers, professors, critics, and Gothic Studies program developers at universities), the fifty-three original works discussed in 21st-Century Gothic represent the most impressive Gothic novels written around the world between 2000-2010. The essays in this volume discuss the merits of these novels, highlighting the influences and key components that make them worthy of inclusion. Many of the pioneer voices of Gothic Studies, as well as other key critics of the field, have all contributed new essays to this volume, including David Punter, Jerrold Hogle, Karen F. Stein, Marie Mulvey-Roberts, Mary Ellen Snodgrass, Tony Magistrale, Don D'Ammassa, Mavis Haut, Walter Rankin, James Doig, Laurence A. Rickels, Douglass H. Thomson, Sue Zlosnik, Carol Margaret Davision, Ruth Bienstock Anolik, Glennis Byron, Judith Wilt, Bernice Murphy, Darrell Schweitzer, and June Pulliam. The guide includes a preface by one of the world's leading authorities on the weird and fantastic, S. T. Joshi. Sharing their knowledge of how traditional Gothic elements and tensions surface in a changed way within a contemporary novel, the contributors enhance the reader's dark enjoyment, emotional involvement, and appreciation of these works. These essays show not only how each of these novels are Gothic but also how they advance or change Gothicism, making the works both irresistible for readers and establishing their place in the Gothic canon.

Book The Short Story

Download or read book The Short Story written by Valerie Shaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-21 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout this text, Valerie Shaw addresses two key questions: 'What are the special satisfactions afforded by reading short stories?' and 'How are these satisfactions derived from each story's literary techniques and narrative strategies?'. She then attempts to answer these questions by drawing on stories from different periods and countries - by authors who were also great novelists, like Henry James, Flaubert, Kafka and D.H. Lawrence; by authors who specifically dedicated themselves to the art of the short story, like Kipling, Chekhov and Katherine Mansfield; by contemporary practitioners like Angela Carter and Jorge Luis Borges; and by unfairly neglected writers like Sarah Orne Jewett and Joel Chandler Harris.

Book Andrew Crosse and the mite that shocked the world

Download or read book Andrew Crosse and the mite that shocked the world written by Brian Wright and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating story of one of the early gentleman scientists who helped lay the foundations for modern life and who unexpectedly achieved worldwide fame, followed quickly by infamy. This is a detailed and personal biography of Andrew Crosse (1784-1855), a pioneering scientist, eccentric republican landowner and poet. It is a tale of scientific dedication and discoveries, family tragedies and scandal. It is filled with many ups and downs and much humour, plus a bit of scandal. It is also full of unexpectedly curious incidents, like his involvement in an armed rebellion as a schoolboy, and the occasion when he accompanied Michael Faraday to a seance! While we owe a lot to the ‘amateur’ scientists who laid the foundation of our modern comfortable existence, we often do not know much about their private lives, and none achieved both the fame and notoriety that Andrew Crosse did, and which is still attached to his name today. Some people have even claimed that Andrew inspired Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and that he accidently created life in the form of mites during an experiment, which brought him to wide attention in Britain, Europe and America, and shook science to its very foundations. His great foresight is now revealed since his predictions about modern life have come true, such as this statement made in 1816: By means of the electric agency, we shall be enabled to communicate our thoughts instantaneously with the utmost parts of the earth. This wide-ranging book is the story of Andrew Crosse’s single-minded dedication to science and very unusual life and family, told in full for the first time.

Book A Laodicean The Castle of the De Stancys

Download or read book A Laodicean The Castle of the De Stancys written by Thomas Hardy and published by tredition. This book was released on 2022-05-06 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Laodicean: The Castle of the De Stancys - Thomas Hardy - A Laodicean; or, The Castle of the De Stancys. A Story of To-Day is a novel by Thomas Hardy, first published in 1880–81 in Harper's New Monthly Magazine. The plot exhibits devices uncommon in Hardy's other fiction, such as falsified telegrams and faked photographs. Paula Power inherits a medieval castle from her industrialist father who had purchased it from the aristocratic De Stancy family. She employs two architects, one local and one, George Somerset, newly qualified from London. Somerset represents modernity in the novel. In the village there is an amateur photographer, William Dare, the illegitimate son of Captain De Stancy, an impoverished scion of that family. Captain De Stancy represents to Paula the notion of medieval nobility. William Dare, bastard and unrecognised son of Captain de Stancy, and a thorough wastrel, decides to intervene to promote his father in her affections (solely so that he, Wade, can continue to gamble and live off Paula's income). He fakes a telegram and a photograph to make it appear that Somerset is leading a dissolute lifestyle as a drunken gambler. His subterfuge is discovered by Captain De Stancy's sister Charlotte who has befriended Paula. She decides to tell Paula the truth and Paula pursues Somerset to the continent where he has gone mistakenly believing Paula and the Captain to have been married. She finds him and they are reunited and marry. In revenge, Wade burns down the castle using his family's portraits and furniture as kindling; Somerset proposes to build a modern house in its place.
