Download or read book Some Day You ll Thank Me for This written by Gayden Metcalfe and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hilarious guide to that incomparable creature -- the Southern mother. Southern society is arranged along matriarchal lines, since the Southern matriarch is a far more formidable being than the much nicer Southern male. She has to be this way; she was put on earth with a sacred mission: to drum good manners and the proper religion--ancestor worship--into the next generation. In Some Day You'll Thank Me for This, Gayden Metcalfe and Charlotte Hays, bestselling authors of Being Dead Is No Excuse and Somebody's Going to Die If Lily Beth Doesn't Catch That Bouquet, deliver up a hilarious treatise--complete with appropriate recipes from those finicky, demanding moms--on the joys, trials, and tribulations of being the daughter of a Southern mother. Including sections such as A Crown in Heaven (a Southern mother's favorite fashion accessory), Grande Dames, Toasting the Southern Mother, and why grandmothers prefer their "precious angel baby" grandchildren to their own "bad" children, this is the perfect gift for any Southern mother -- or daughter of one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1977, when Zhongmei Lei was 11 years old, she learned that the prestigious Beijing Dance Academy was having open auditions. She'd already taken dance lessons, but everyone said a poor country girl would never get into the academy, especially without any connections in the Communist Party of the 1970s. But Zhongmei, whose name means Faithful Plum, persisted, traveled for three days and two nights to get to Beijing and eventually beat out 60,000 other girls. But getting in was easy compared to staying in, as Zhongmei soon learned. Without those all-important connections, she was just a little girl on her own, far away from family. But her determination, talent, and sheer force of will were not something the teachers or other students expected, and soon it was apparent that Zhongmei was not to be underestimated. Zhongmei became a famous dancer, and founded her own dance company, which made its New York debut when she was in just her late 20s. In A Girl Named Faithful Plum, her husband and renowned journalist, Richard Bernstein, has written a fascinating account of one girl's struggle to go from the remote farmlands of China to the world's stages, and the lengths she went to in order to follow her dream.

Some of Joseph's friends are never heard from again. Joseph becomes entrapped in the mystery of his friends' disappearances when, one day after work, he and his friend, Fareed, are forcibly thrown into the backseat of a black Nissan and abducted. The two young men are forced to join a ruthless militia. This military, formed by the IRG to protect Lebanon from invasion by the Israelis, contradicts its credence. Joseph witnesses the most horrific sins that man can inflict upon another human being and he wants out. He thinks his Maker has abandoned him and he questions God's very existence, ultimately doubting his own faith. After grueling years of enduring this military life, escape, and concealment, a way opens up for him to safely flee the country and eventually return to the U.S.
Download or read book Paris Hangover written by Kirsten Lobe and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2006-03-21 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A glamorous fish-out-of-water first novel, Paris Hangover stars Klein, a just-escaped New Yorker with trunk-fulls of fabulous footwear but without the significant relationship she'd really expected and longed to have by now, in her mid-thirties. Fleeing a live-in lover and their sleek Tribeca triplex as well as a career in fashion, Klein stars over in Paris-in a tiny walk-up in the 6th that she had to lie (in broken Franglais) and write a bad check to get, only to discover that, among other things, Parisian apartments don't come with kitchens. Living out of her ten piece of (Louis Vuitton, natch) luggage, Klein plunges into the mysterious world of French men and dating. She muddles her way through: the sexy Renaud, the prototypical Frenchman; dating three men named Jean simultaneously; and one completely wrong Monsieur Married Man, who wants Klein for his very well-kept mistress. Set against a backdrop of knowing references to Paris and its unique manners and mores, Paris Hangover is ultimately a very satisfying modern romance as Klein falls-- possibly permanently--for the least likely man to catch her eye.

Download or read book The Right Thing to Do written by Josephine Gattuso Hendin and published by Feminist Press at CUNY. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young Italian American woman struggles to find her way between two cultures in this novel of “familial dignity . . . credibility and intelligence” (Kirkus Reviews). On a stroll in his Queens neighborhood, Sicilian-born Nino Giardello glimpses his daughter, ambitious nineteen-year-old Gina, heading for the subway. Silently, he follows her to Manhattan and watches, outraged, as she walks into the arms of a golden-haired stranger. The incident confirms Nino’s worst suspicions about his daughter, whose American lifestyle he sees as an insult to his heritage. In a struggle that exceeds all boundaries, including death, father and daughter will engage in a conflict of generations, cultures, and sexes. Josephine Gattuso Hendin captures New York Italian immigrant life with startling precision, exploring the intricate web of a community’s everyday transactions and the multifaceted father-daughter relationship at the heart of the Italian American family. A coming-of-age novel that is both wryly funny and achingly sad, “The Right Thing to Do effectively portrays both New York’s Italian immigrant milieu and one man’s rage at his own powerlessness in the face of his child’s hunger for life” (Booklist).

This book was released on 2021-02-06 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claire Harding I live in Idaho. (Yes, potatoes. *eye roll* Can we talk about something else?) And I love it here. Small town values galore and it’s right where I want to raise my girls after my jerk ex traded me in for a “younger, newer model” (his words, not mine). My mom’s the volunteer fire chief in our town and I’m pretty happy hanging out with the auxiliary at the fire hall and doing her grunt work – NOT fighting fires, because, please, I read, love science and my idea of a lot of exercise is having to walk up the stairs twice in the morning before I send my girls off to school and leave for my job as a home nurse. I guess it’s kind of weird that I also coach basketball. Long story. I was pretty happy with my life until the hot shot, all-state baller from my teen years moved back in next door. (I babysat him, yes, but I never changed his diapers. Just wanted to be clear about that.) Guess who’s now the assistant b-ball coach? Logic would say me – especially since I coached my entire first year holding the play book upside down (it turned out to be an old football playbook from the ‘80s, so it’s not like it mattered which way I held it) but the accurate answer is Trey Haywood, my all-star neighbor, and I’m honestly not sure which of us is more upset about it. Anyway, the team was trying to set us up (girls, they’re such romantics) and I don’t think they would have succeeded, but in celebration of breaking our 37 game losing streak, they locked Trey and me in the septic system control room. That changed everything. Not in a good way. Trey Yeah. What she said. And…when I first saw her again, I thought she was a catastrophe. New thought post septic control: she’s a cute catastrophe. (And, holy man, can she kiss.) Listen for free on the Say with Jay channel on YouTube. Reviews for Me and the Cute Catastrophe: ★★★★★ "This is a giggle, snort, snort, laugh out loud kind of book, but there is an underlying message about growing up, letting go of some insecurities, seeing life with all its warts but loving anyway. Oh and the kiss scene is the best." - Wren ★★★★★ "This is a little different than Jessie’s other books, but I LOVED it! Trey and Claire were truly fun to read about. You won’t be disappointed!" - Ashton01 ★★★★★ "It's beautifully written, the characters are true to real, and true to life. It's funny, and loving, and exciting, just like a Rom-Com should be. Although it doesn't have any sex in it, you can still feel the attraction and desire building." - Ken ★★★★★ "This book starts out funny from the very beginning and pulls you right in! I’m actually not a fan of funny books, (just to be clear, I do like a little humor) but this had me hooked right off!" - Kindle Customer ★★★★★ "I admit to being a skimmer. But the way this author writes, I had to stop that behavior and read every word so I wouldn’t miss out on a laugh or grin or smirk. She was just throwing those sentences out there and I couldn’t skim or I would miss them. Thank you so much Jessie for a really enjoyable read." - Shirley Books in the Sweet, Small Town Romantic Comedy in Good Grief, Idaho series: Me and the Cute Catastrophe Me and the Tidy Tornado Me and the Helpful Hurricane Me and the Sweet Snowstorm Me and the Dreamy Doomsday
