Book Some Famous Women Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Famous Women Classic Reprint written by Louise Creighton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Famous Women IN this little book I am going to tell you about some of the women who have been famous in the past. There are perhaps many names more famous than those I have chosen, but it was not always the best women who were the most talked about. In the past it was seldom that any woman, who was not a royal lady or some great aristocrat, became known to the world. In the early days of Christianity, many women suffered bravely for their faith, and later in the convents there were studious nuns who became known for their learning. In the account of St. Hilda you will read of one of the most famous of these. But most women were busy in keeping their houses, and had to do many things which no woman would dream of doing now. Cloth and linen had to be woven at home, simple medicines and ointments were made by the great ladies, who had often to act as doctors as well as nurses. Only few women had any book learning, and it was long before it was thought desirable for a woman to learn to writef When good schools were started for boys, few people thought it desirable to do anything for the education of girls. It was not till the nineteenth century that a change began, and that people as a rule began to think that, as girls had minds as well as boys, it was as well to give them the chance of learning. When you read about Mrs. Somerville, you will see how great was the change in her lifetime. No one troubled to teach her when she was a Child, but before her death the first colleges for women were founded at Cambridge. Joan of Kent is an example of the aimless life led by a great lady in the Middle Ages who was kindly and beloved, but did not know how to make her life of use to others. Margaret Beaumont was also a great lady and might have spent her days in pleasure, but the experiences of her life made her serious, and she used her life and her money in the service of others. Since their day, there have been many great ladies who have been like one or other of these two. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Find the Woman The day after moving in, while Mrs. O'shea was unpacking'the trunk and Mangus o'shea was shay ing at a broken triangle of mirror stuck in the win dow, the boy's eyes caught a shiny something in an open cardboard box. In wonder, with a queer, sick ish feeling of recognition he stooped down and toole it - a little golden heart with a star of white stones on the cover. Strange memories, as if of a long for gotten dream, stirred him uneasily as he handled it. The next moment he was knocked down by a violent cuff on the ear, and Mangus o'shea stood over him, his small reddish eyes blazing, ugly with anger, his snarling lips, parted, revealing a broken row of lit tle black teeth, horribly distinct in the middle of his. Lathered face. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Woman and Her Era Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Woman and Her Era Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Eliza Woodson Burhans Farnham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman and Her Era, Vol. 1 Women from the legal and social disabilities under which the sex has labored from the beginning. If the wife of the dissolute husband can hold in her own right, the means of saving her children from starvation and ignorance; if the ranks of self-supporting Women find new and more remu nerative fields Open to them; if the Wronged Woman breathes a more human atmosphere of compassion, tender ness, and respect - healers, all, of the hurt she has suffered; if the Society of our day realizes, in its high need, the more fluent power of Woman to purify, inspire, and uplift it to higher motives and better regulated action; if the diviner tenderness of the feminine life is taking more distinct forms of potentiality over the selfishness and ferocity of former ages, we have to thank, more than any other party or organization, the brave Women of our generation who have persistently striven for these objects, bearing, mean while, the inevitable reproach and contumely of such a Reform, but never abandoning it. And if the views herein contained, are to receive a more liberal hearing now than they could have at the period of their advent into my own mind, that favorable circumstance, according to my judgment, is due mainly to these efforts. And I am grateful for them - not so much because they have prepared an audience for my word, as for any Truth of Woman, from any source. Book Women of the Last Days of Old France Classic Reprint

Download or read book Women of the Last Days of Old France Classic Reprint written by Margaret Roberts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women of the Last Days of Old France The Sketches of Madame Lebrun and Madame d'ab rantes originally appeared in a magazine they are now given in a much enlarged form. They were written when the name of F rance - of Paris - could be heard without the unutterable regret which they now awaken. At a time when events of European, or rather, of world-wide importance, have occupied all minds, it seems almost an impertinence to offer to the public so slight a work, but it is a contribution to the history of that past, without knowing which we shall try in vain to comprehend the present. Book The Woman Movement Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Woman Movement Classic Reprint written by Ellen Karolina Sofia Key and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Woman Movement The limited compass of this little book prevents me from substantiating my assertions by means of parallels with earlier times, comparisons which might illuminate certain spiritual transformations and new formations. My comparisons of the present with the past do not go farther back than my own memory reaches. And these touch, more over, in what concerns the past, principally up on Swedish conditions; while my impressions of the present were gathered throughout Europe. I have considered, however, that I could summarise both in a comprehensive picture. For although the women of Sweden a generation ago possessed rights for which the women in many countries are still struggling to-day, yet the woman movement in the last decade has advanced so rapidly that the conditions have in great measure been equal ised. Indeed, some of the grey-haired champions of the woman movement have seen one after another of their demands fulfilled in this new cen tury-demands which in the fifties and sixties, in many countries even in the seventies and eighties.
