Book Some Wave Propagation Problems in Plastic viscoplastic Materials

Download or read book Some Wave Propagation Problems in Plastic viscoplastic Materials written by Munirathnam Valathur and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lubliner suggested that the uniaxial constitutive equation (1.1) be used in the numerical solution of wave-propagation problems, and that the results approximating those of either hypothesis may be obtained in extreme cases. He further showed on the basis of an extremely simple, piece-wise linear, model of plastic-viscoplastic behavior, that results approaching the viscoplastic hypothesis will be obtained under one or more of the following circumstances: (1) weak impact, (2) long bar, (3) short 'relaxation' time (or natural time of the material); that converse conditions will lead to results approaching the plastic hypothesis; and that intermediate conditions require the use of the general constitutive equation. The purpose of the present study is to test further the validity of Lubliner's suggestions by means of numerical solutions of representative wave-propagation problems in bars whose mechanical behavior is described by the uniaxial constitutive equation, slightly modified to account for loading-unloading behavior.

Book Stress Waves in Non Elastic Solids

Download or read book Stress Waves in Non Elastic Solids written by W. K. Nowacki and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress Waves in Non-Elastic Solids is a comprehensive presentation of the principles underlying the propagation of stress waves in non-elastic solids, with emphasis on wave problems in the theory of plasticity. This book exposes wave propagation problems for a range of material responses and justifies the hypotheses introduced in specialized theories and the simplifications made in the analysis of particular problems. Both analytical and numerical methods of solving problems are described, and a large number of solutions to specific problems of wave propagation in inelastic solids are given. This book is comprised of six chapters and begins with an overview of the fundamental equations of the dynamics of inelastic media. The dynamical properties of metals and soils are discussed, offering an account of the most representative theories of plasticity and viscoplasticity. The next chapter considers the basic definitions of discontinuity surfaces and the conditions that must to be satisfied across these surfaces. Certain mathematical fundamentals are given, referring to systems of differential equations, quasi-linear and semi-linear, of the first order. Initial and boundary value problems for hyperbolic equations are also formulated. The remaining chapters focus on methods of solving stress wave propagation problems, including one-dimensional plane waves and longitudinal-transverse waves. Wave propagation problems for elastic-plastic and elastic/viscoplastic media are treated in detail, along with the most important problem of shock waves in metals and soils. The last chapter deals with thermal wave propagation problems. This monograph will be a valuable resource for students and practitioners of engineering, physics, and mathematics.

Book Fundamentals of Shock Wave Propagation in Solids

Download or read book Fundamentals of Shock Wave Propagation in Solids written by Lee Davison and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-24 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My intent in writing this book is to present an introduction to the thermo- chanical theory required to conduct research and pursue applications of shock physics in solid materials. Emphasis is on the range of moderate compression that can be produced by high-velocity impact or detonation of chemical exp- sives and in which elastoplastic responses are observed and simple equations of state are applicable. In the interest of simplicity, the presentation is restricted to plane waves producing uniaxial deformation. Although applications often - volve complex multidimensional deformation fields it is necessary to begin with the simpler case. This is also the most important case because it is the usual setting of experimental research. The presentation is also restricted to theories of material response that are simple enough to permit illustrative problems to be solved with minimal recourse to numerical analysis. The discussions are set in the context of established continuum-mechanical principles. I have endeavored to define the quantities encountered with some care and to provide equations in several convenient forms and in a way that lends itself to easy reference. Thermodynamic analysis plays an important role in continuum mechanics, and I have included a presentation of aspects of this subject that are particularly relevant to shock physics. The notation adopted is that conventional in expositions of modern continuum mechanics, insofar as possible, and variables are explained as they are encountered. Those experienced in shock physics may find some of the notation unconventional.

Book Surface Waves in Geomechanics Direct and Inverse Modelling for Soils and Rocks

Download or read book Surface Waves in Geomechanics Direct and Inverse Modelling for Soils and Rocks written by Carlo G. Lai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-03-23 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theories of surface waves develop since the end of XIX century and many fundamental problems like existence, phase and group velocities, attenuation (quality factor), mode conversion, etc. have been, in part successfully, solved within the framework of such simple models as ideal fluids^ or linear elasticity. However, a sufficiently complete presentation of this subject, particularly for solids, is still missing in the literature. The sole exception is the book of I. A. Viktorov^ which contains an extensive discussion of fundamental properties of surface waves in homogeneous and stratified linear elastic solids with particular emphasis on contributions of Russian scientists. Unfortunately, the book has never been translated to English and its Russian version is also hardly available. Practical applications of surface waves develop intensively since a much shorter period of time than theories even though the motivation of discoverers of surface waves such as Lord Rayleigh stems from their appearance in geophysics and seismology. Nowadays the growing interest in practical applications of surface waves stem from the following two main factors: surface waves are ideal for developing relatively cheap and convenient methods of nondestructive testing of various systems spanning from nanomaterials (e.g.
