Book Concentration Compactness

Download or read book Concentration Compactness written by Kyril Tintarev and published by Imperial College Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentration compactness is an important method in mathematical analysis which has been widely used in mathematical research for two decades. This unique volume fulfills the need for a source book that usefully combines a concise formulation of the method, a range of important applications to variational problems, and background material concerning manifolds, non-compact transformation groups and functional spaces. Highlighting the role in functional analysis of invariance and, in particular, of non-compact transformation groups, the book uses the same building blocks, such as partitions of domain and partitions of range, relative to transformation groups, in the proofs of energy inequalities and in the weak convergence lemmas.

Book Variational Methods for Potential Operator Equations

Download or read book Variational Methods for Potential Operator Equations written by Jan H. Chabrowski and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-06-24 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series is devoted to the publication of monographs and high-level textbooks in mathematics, mathematical methods and their applications. Apart from covering important areas of current interest, a major aim is to make topics of an interdisciplinary nature accessible to the non-specialist. The works in this series are addressed to advanced students and researchers in mathematics and theoretical physics. In addition, it can serve as a guide for lectures and seminars on a graduate level. The series de Gruyter Studies in Mathematics was founded ca. 30 years ago by the late Professor Heinz Bauer and Professor Peter Gabriel with the aim to establish a series of monographs and textbooks of high standard, written by scholars with an international reputation presenting current fields of research in pure and applied mathematics. While the editorial board of the Studies has changed with the years, the aspirations of the Studies are unchanged. In times of rapid growth of mathematical knowledge carefully written monographs and textbooks written by experts are needed more than ever, not least to pave the way for the next generation of mathematicians. In this sense the editorial board and the publisher of the Studies are devoted to continue the Studies as a service to the mathematical community. Please submit any book proposals to Niels Jacob.

Book Nonlinear Diffusion Equations and Their Equilibrium States II

Download or read book Nonlinear Diffusion Equations and Their Equilibrium States II written by W.-M. Ni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years considerable interest has been focused on nonlinear diffu sion problems, the archetypical equation for these being Ut = ~U + f(u). Here ~ denotes the n-dimensional Laplacian, the solution u = u(x, t) is defined over some space-time domain of the form n x [O,T], and f(u) is a given real function whose form is determined by various physical and mathematical applications. These applications have become more varied and widespread as problem after problem has been shown to lead to an equation of this type or to its time-independent counterpart, the elliptic equation of equilibrium ~u+f(u)=O. Particular cases arise, for example, in population genetics, the physics of nu clear stability, phase transitions between liquids and gases, flows in porous media, the Lend-Emden equation of astrophysics, various simplified com bustion models, and in determining metrics which realize given scalar or Gaussian curvatures. In the latter direction, for example, the problem of finding conformal metrics with prescribed curvature leads to a ground state problem involving critical exponents. Thus not only analysts, but geome ters as well, can find common ground in the present work. The corresponding mathematical problem is to determine how the struc ture of the nonlinear function f(u) influences the behavior of the solution.

Book Perspectives in Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Perspectives in Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations written by Henri Berestycki and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In celebration of Haim Brezis's 60th birthday, a conference was held at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, with a program testifying to Brezis's wide-ranging influence on nonlinear analysis and partial differential equations. The articles in this volume are primarily from that conference. They present a rare view of the state of the art of many aspects of nonlinear PDEs, as well as describe new directions that are being opened up in this field. The articles, written by mathematicians at the center of current developments, provide somewhat more personal views of the important developments and challenges.

Book The Mountain Pass Theorem

Download or read book The Mountain Pass Theorem written by Youssef Jabri and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-15 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2003 book presents min-max methods through a study of the different faces of the celebrated Mountain Pass Theorem (MPT) of Ambrosetti and Rabinowitz. The reader is led from the most accessible results to the forefront of the theory, and at each step in this walk between the hills, the author presents the extensions and variants of the MPT in a complete and unified way. Coverage includes standard topics, but it also covers other topics covered nowhere else in book form: the non-smooth MPT; the geometrically constrained MPT; numerical approaches to the MPT; and even more exotic variants. Each chapter has a section with supplementary comments and bibliographical notes, and there is a rich bibliography and a detailed index to aid the reader. The book is suitable for researchers and graduate students. Nevertheless, the style and the choice of the material make it accessible to all newcomers to the field.
