Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Turning-Points in Church History These lectures are an attempt to consider those particular crises in Church History which have been so far reaching as to determine the form of the organization of the Christian Churches. Their polity has been determined chiefly, I believe, by four outstanding historical events; the founding of the Church, the establishment of the Christian Ministry, the organization of delimited National Churches and the formation of free Churches, independent of both ecclesiastical and civil authority. One lecture is devoted to each of these pivotal events and to them a fifth is added which deals with the establishment of free churches on the shores of America. The first of these lectures appeared in The Harvard Theological Review for January, 1917, and three of them have been delivered at Union Theological Seminary. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church at the Turning Points of History This booklet contains the substance of a course of lectures given at the Women's University Extension in Antwerp, during the scholastic year 1897-1898. This explains sufficiently the plan and style of the work. There was question of presenting to an intelligent audience the great lines of a tableau, which must be surveyed at one glance, if one wishes to grasp its vast and striking unity. Friendly critics have asked me to give ref crenees for the statements made. I have not deemed it wise to burden with annotations lectures which aim to present ideas rather than to state facts. As will be seen, I take it for granted that the latter are known to the reader, and I trust that he will take my word for occasional statements of facts with which he may not be familiar. Download or read book Turning Points of English Church History Classic Reprint written by Edward Lewes Cutts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Turning Points of English Church History The plan of this little book is, not to give a connected history of the Church of England, but to put before the reader some of its principal points, especially those which will help him to understand the Church questions of the present day. It has not been thought necessary in such a sketch as this to quote authorities but it may be desirable to state that pains have been taken to make the work accurate and impartial. To secure this the more effectually, the writer is permitted to say, that the proof sheets have been carefully revised by the Rev. W. Stubbs, Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford, one of our greatest authorities on ecclesiastical history. He is not to be held answerable for any opinions the work may contain, but his corrections and suggestions have added to its value, and his supervision will give the reader confidence in its general correctness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leading Events in the History of the Church, Vol. 1: Christian Antiquity St. Peter was therefore the first Pope, Shepherd and teacher of the one flock of Christ. To him our Lord gave the keys of the kingdom of Heaven, and to him He promised infallibility, which means that the Pope cannot err when, as Shepherd and teacher of all Christians, he defines a doctrine concerning faith or morals to be held by the whole Church. Book A History of the Christian Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Christian Church Classic Reprint written by Williston Walker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eminent church historian and theologian Professor Williston Walker gives us an authoritative and scholarly account on the progress of the church founded by Christ, aptly titled A History of the Christian Church. First published in 1918, this edition has since gone on to become one of the classics in Christian literature. It examines various periods that led to the establishment of the church and how the Reformation came about in light of the preceding events. The author begins this volume with a discussion on the general situation before proceeding to talk about Judaism, the rise of Jesus and his disciples, the end of the apostolic era and the development of Christianity in the second century AD. From Gnosticism at the beginning of the book, he ends with the eventual transition to the modern situation, tackling various subjects such as English Unitarianism, Methodism, Catholicism, and even American Christianity - religious denominations and divisions which remain relevant to this day. The exhaustive nature of Professor Walker's work shows his expertise in the subject and the extent of the research he has done to produce a classic historical account of superb quality. Students of religious studies, as well as those seeking enlightenment on the development of the modern Christian church will benefit much from this clearly written and comprehensive opus. Book Readings in Church History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Readings in Church History Classic Reprint written by James Samuel Stone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Church History The purpose of the present work is not to increase the number of text-books or to intrude into the domain of the finished and elaborate treatises with which scholars are familiar, but by a series of pleasing and instructive studies to lead the general reader both to further research and to a deeper love for the Church of God. The sequence of time and of order has been observed, yet each chapter is so designed that perusal need not be continuous or con secutive. In these pages, as the master of history may find views expressed and interpretations given which will serve at least to support or to make known con elusions not popularly recognized, so may the beginner discover a completeness which, though rude, is still sufficiently suggestive to leave upon the mind a cor rect impression. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leading Events in the History of the Church, Vol. 2: The Early Middle Ages The great Teutonic, Gothic, or Germanic branch of the human race which, during the fifth and sixth centuries, overran Europe was made up of several distinct peoples. Little by little they divided among them the broad Roman Empire, but not by any friendly arrangement; each tribe seized what it could, and kept possession by force of arms, unless driven off by some more powerful new-comers. As time went on, the different European nations began to be formed, and it is possible to say to which of the tribes each owes its origin, though it must not be thought that the countries had the same boundaries or the same names as they have now, or that the people of to-day are the direct descendants of these old Gothic tribes alone. Book Sketches of Church History

Download or read book Sketches of Church History written by James Wharey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Church History: Comprising a Regular Series of the Most Important and Interesting Events in the History of the Church, From the Birth of Christ to the Nineteenth Century The idea has too generally prevailed, that church history belongs only to theologians, and that it could be neither important nor interesting to the common reader. Hence there is perhaps no branch of knowledge, of which the mass of people are more ignorant, than the history of the Church of Christ in the world. Most of our church histories are too voluminous for the generality of readers: and this is one reason, perhaps, why the subject has been so much neglected. Few branches of study would be found more interesting as an amusement; certainly none, fuller of affecting and important incident. Even the lover of romantic subjects would find many events recorded in the history of the Church, of quite as powerful interest, as any of the dreams of fiction.
