Book Regulation and Compliance in the Atlantic Fisheries

Download or read book Regulation and Compliance in the Atlantic Fisheries written by Stig S. Gezelius and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about fishermen's reasons for obeying fisheries law. The fish harvesting industry has become subject to state interference to an increasing extent over the past twenty years. As natural resources become scarce and subsequent fisheries regulations abound, the question of law-abidingness is brought to the public agenda. However, there is still little empirical data as regards the dynamics of compliance in this field, and this book aims to meet a demand for in-depth knowledge. The cases studied can be regarded as instances of economies dependent on the harvesting of natural resources for both household and the market, and the study aims to contribute to the building of more adequate theory on the dynamics of compliance in such economies. However, focusing on a specific type of setting seldom constitutes a safe escape route for getting away from more pervasive sociological questions, and it certainly does not in this case. As any attempt to explain social phenomena, this study is faced with the fundamental sociological question of how the acts of individuals can best be understood. The question concerns the interface between the individual and the collectivity – between collective morality and self-interest. It thus deals with classical sociological issues such as the nature and regulatory capacity of group norms and sanctions, and the forms and roles of rationality and strategic action.

Book Market Denial and International Fisheries Regulation

Download or read book Market Denial and International Fisheries Regulation written by Darren S. Calley and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flag of convenience fishing seriously undermines efforts to protect the marine environment. To counter this threat, Market Denial and International Fisheries Regulation rests on the logic of the most basic tenet of economics: if no market exists for a product then producers will cease to produce. Denying market access to the flag of convenience fishing fleet should significantly reduce instances of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. In areas beyond national jurisdiction not only is market denial the most effective means of undermining the IUU fleet, it is, for most practical purposes, the only way to do so. To what extent, however, do the laws of the sea and international trade allow groups of States to close their markets to non-compliant fishing vessels?

Book The Blue Revolution

  • Author : Nicholas Sullivan
  • Publisher : Island Press

  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book The Blue Revolution written by Nicholas Sullivan and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overfishing. For the world’s oceans, it’s long been a worrisome problem with few answers. Many of the global fish stocks are at a dangerous tipping point, some spiraling toward extinction. But as older fishing fleets retire and new technologies develop, a better, more sustainable way to farm this popular protein has emerged to profoundly shift the balance. The Blue Revolution tells the story of the recent transformation of commercial fishing: an encouraging change from maximizing volume through unrestrained wild hunting to maximizing value through controlled harvesting and farming. Entrepreneurs applying newer, smarter technologies are modernizing fisheries in unprecedented ways. In many parts of the world, the seafood on our plates is increasingly the product of smart decisions about ecosystems, waste, efficiency, transparency, and quality. Nicholas P. Sullivan presents this new way of thinking about fish, food, and oceans by profiling the people and policies transforming an aging industry into one that is “post-industrial”—fueled by “sea-foodies” and locavores interested in sustainable, traceable, quality seafood. Catch quotas can work when local fishers feel they have a stake in the outcome; shellfish farming requires zero inputs and restores nearshore ecosystems; new markets are developing for kelp products, as well as unloved and “underutilized” fish species. Sullivan shows how the practices of thirty years ago that perpetuated an overfishing crisis are rapidly changing. In the book’s final chapters, Sullivan discusses the global challenges to preserving healthy oceans, including conservation mechanisms, the impact of climate change, and unregulated and criminal fishing in international waters. In a fast-growing world where more people are eating more fish than ever before, The Blue Revolution brings encouraging news for conservationists and seafood lovers about the transformation of an industry historically averse to change, and it presents fresh inspiration for entrepreneurs and investors eager for new opportunities in a blue-green economy.

Book Sustaining Marine Fisheries

Download or read book Sustaining Marine Fisheries written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-03-19 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluctuations and declines in marine fish populations have caused growing concern among marine scientists, fisheries managers, commercial and recreational fishers, and the public. Sustaining Marine Fisheries explores the nature of marine ecosystems and the complex interacting factors that shape their productivity. The book documents the condition of marine fisheries today, highlighting species and geographic areas that are under particular stress. Challenges to achieving sustainability are discussed, and shortcomings of existing fisheries management and regulation are examined. The volume calls for fisheries management to adopt a broader ecosystem perspective that encompasses all relevant environmental and human influences. Sustaining Marine Fisheries offers new approaches to building workable fisheries management institutions, improving scientific data, and developing management tools. The book recommends ways to change current practices that encourage overexploitation of fish resources. It will be of special interest to marine policymakers and ecologists, fisheries regulators and managers, fisheries scientists and marine ecologists, fishers, and concerned individuals.

Book The U S Fishing Industry Vol 2

Download or read book The U S Fishing Industry Vol 2 written by United States Comptroller General and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The U. S. Fishing Industry, Vol. 2: Present Condition and Future of Marine Fisheries The fishery laws, generally, could be improved with some reorganization, recodification, and clarification. First, Congress might consider reorganizing and recodifying most of the fishery laws under one title of the United States Code. While many of the laws are now in title 16, many others are scattered throughout other titles titles 15 and 46) of the Code. Either title 15 or title 16 would be a logical place for the fishery laws. Of course, there are laws that per tain to fisheries that also pertain to other matters and would be best left in place. Fisheries laws, when revised and recodified, should be separated from wildlife laws and from shipping laws. Fish conservation appears to be different from wildlife conservation and properly should be treated separately. Likewise, it might be helpful to separate fish - related laws from general shipping laws. In such areas as research and financial assistance to the fishing industry, consolidation of the laws would also be beneficial. Further, in recodifying the laws, the powers and the duties and responsibilities of the Secretary of Commerce could be clearly defined to reflect the transfer of functions under Reorganization Plan No. 4 of 1970. For example, 16 u.s.c. §742h, which lists a variety of Fish and Wildlife Reports to be made by the Secre tary of the Interior, has been changed by the Reorganization Plan. The statute does not reflect this change except for a note at the end of the provision that does not help define the functions transferred to the Secretary of Commerce without reference to the Reorganization Plan itself, and this does not, in all cases, completely clarify matters. A provision of law like section 742h could be divided into two separate statutes - one designating wild life reports required of the Secretary of the Interior and the other designating fish reports required of the Secretary of Com merce. Many laws could be changed in the same way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
