Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important study Hays argues against the mainstream that any attempt to account for the nature and method of Paul's theological language must first reckon with the centrality of narrative elements in his thought. Through an in-depth investigation of Galatians 3:1-4:11, Hays shows that the framework of Paul's thought is neither a system of doctrines nor his personal religious experience but the "sacred story" of Jesus Christ.

Book The Joy of the Gospel

Download or read book The Joy of the Gospel written by Pope Francis and published by Image. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Book The Healing of the Nations

Download or read book The Healing of the Nations written by Charles Linton and published by Greenslet Press. This book was released on 2008-10-27 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Light one another. Love one another. Preach and practice the truth. INTRODUCTION AND APPENDIX The writer, CHARLES LINTOX, is a native of Newtown Township, Bucks County, State of Pennsylvania, and is now about twenty-six years of age. He is a young man of good natural capacity, of limited education, having only liad the advantages of a common district school in Pennsylvania, and that, too, at a time when the common schooIs of that State -ere not as far advanced as they non- are. He had no opportunity of going beyond the common branches, and, as he has often said to me, never did like to go to school. At the age of sixteen he went to learn the blacksmiths trade, and worked at it till nearly twenty two years of age. He then engaged as a clerk in a drygoods store in Philadelphia, and afterward as a bookkeeper of a firm of lumber commission merchants. Whilst thus engaged, he became developed as a writing medium, and most of his time since he has been thus employed. Some of the purest and most exalted communications which I have seen have come through him. Has character for personal integrity and moral purity is unblemished. About a year ago Nr. Linton was directed to write no more miscellaneous communications, but to give his attention to writing a book which would be dictatecl to him spiritual influeuce. He procured, according to direction, a thick bound blank rolume of the largest ruled letter sheet, and in that volume commenced writing. The volume itself is almost a miracle. The chirography is beautiful. His handwriting in this volume is totally different from his ordinary handwriting, and can be read as easily as print. He writes with a steel pen, and the original writing of this book is in the bound volume above mentioned. It is written with an accuracy and neatness which could not be surpassed b the most expert copyist. There are four hundred and thirty pages in the volume, and not a word of importance erased or interlined throughout the whole ald any slight mistake, however immaterial, is entirely ttributable to the inattention of the writer., A large portion of the book has been written in my presence. I have, therefore, had the very best opportunity of judging of the manner of the writer. During the time I was with him he wrote from five to ten pages a day. He wrote rapid whilst the influence 11-2s on him, and when it left he would cease writing, and generally not resume it till the next day. He frequently interrupted him in the middle of a sentence, and engaged him in conversation. As soon as the conversation ceased he would go on and finish the sentence without a moments hesitation. Many literary and scientific gentlemen have examined the original volume, and prononced portions of it beyond human conception. The style is simple and faultless, and adapted to every capacity. The most astute critic can not strike out a word in a single sentence, and substitute another which he can truthfully say will improve it in style or sentiment. Neither can he select a sentence that he can in like manner say does not embody or enforce some truth. I can, in no way, better describe the feelings, the impressions, and the influence under which this book has been written

Book excerpt: "If catastrophe is not representable according to the narrative explanations which would ‘make sense’ of history, then making sense of ourselves and charting the future are not impossible. But we are, as it were, marked for life, and that mark is insuperable, irrecoverable. It becomes the condition by which life is risked, by which the question of whether one can move, and with whom, and in what way is framed and incited by the irreversibility of loss itself."—Judith Butler, from the Afterword "Loss is a wonderful volume: powerful and important, deeply moving and intellectually challenging at the same time, ethical and not moralistic. It is one of those rare collections that work as a multifaceted whole to map new areas for inquiry and pose new questions. I found myself educated and provoked by the experience of participating in an ongoing dialogue."—Amy Kaplan, author of The Anarchy of Empire in the Making of U.S. Culture
