Book Some South African Recollections Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some South African Recollections Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Lionel Phillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some South African Recollections These recollections of a page in South African history have been written as a record for my children of the part played by their father in the Reform move ment in the Transvaal, as they were at the time too young to understand or appreciate all he did and suffered for the good cause. I have endeavoured to explain the origin of that movement, and why, for the moment, it failed. I venture to publish what I have written, as I am led to believe there are many people interested in the subject, but not sufficiently informed as to the true course of events, who would be glad to read the testimony of a South African. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life Time in South Africa: Being the Recollections of the First Premier of Natal The pages which follow are not intended in any way to deal exhaustively with what is known as The South African Problem. They claim to be nothing more than a series of cameos of the past, extending back over a period of fifty years, and covering the life and growth of a British Colony from its birth to the developments of to-day. It is hoped that these sketches (some of which have already appeared in the pages of Cornhill Magazine) may serve to show not only how the Empire of Great Britain has been and is being extended in the wild places of the earth, but how valid and unassailable is the title by which that Empire holds its position of paramountcy in South Africa. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South African Memories: Social, Warlike Sporting From Diaries Written at the Time Everything of interest that has happened to me in life chances to have been in connection with South Africa. In that land, where some of my happiest days have been spent, I have also experienced long periods of intense excitement and anxiety; there I have made acquaintance with all the charm of the veldt, in the vast country north of the great Zambesi River, hearing the roar of the lions at night, and following their "spoor" by day; and last, but not least, I have there made some very good friends. Only a few years ago, when peacefully spending a few weeks at Assouan in Egypt, I was nearly drowned by the capsizing of a boat in the Nile; again the spirit of the vast continent (on this occasion far away to the north) seemed to watch over me. For all these reasons I venture to claim the indulgence of the public and the kindness of my friends, for these recollections of days in South Africa, in which shade and sunshine have been strangely mingled, and which to me have never been dull. Book Fifty Years in South Africa

Download or read book Fifty Years in South Africa written by George Nicholson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years in South Africa: Being Some Recollections and Reflections of a Veteran Pioneer N 0 one can read the Chapters on game and shooting without being convinced that although a hunter for the market the author is a thorough Sportsman. Of personal adventures he is slow to write, remarking that one episode is very much the same as another; many sportsmen will regret that one who has killed so many lions and much other large game is so reticent on the subject of his sporting exploits, but those who intend visiting South Africa in search Of Sport will read with greater profit the particulars he gives Of the game-lands, and his remarks on the subject Of game pre servation should be borne in mind by those who have the interest Of South Africa at heart. TO the Boer large game has been a source of wealth, and its rapid extinction in the Transvaal will probably result at no distant date in a trek of the Boer stock-raisers to districts within British territory, and this must react on the division of parties within the Transvaal and so has a political as well as an economical aspect. This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South African Memories by Sarah Isabella Augusta Wilson The above words, written by one of the greatest philosophers of olden time, have often impressed me, and I have frequently quoted them when asked why I did not write an account of the interesting travels and adventures I have had in my life. It has therefore required a great deal of courage to take up my pen and record a few recollections of South Africa. I felt that, were they ever to be written at all, it must be before the rapidly passing years diminish the interest in that land, which in the past has been the object of such engrossing attention; and that at the present time, when the impending Federation of South Africa has at length crowned the hopes of those patriots who have laboured patiently and hopefully to bring about this great result, it might be appropriate to recall those days when Englishmen, who had made South Africa their home, had much to contend with, even before the fierce struggle to keep "the flag flying" in the years of 1899-1902. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Book Recollections of Adventures

Download or read book Recollections of Adventures written by H. W. Struben and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Adventures: Pioneering and Development in South Africa, 1850-1911 At the request of my life's friend and dear companion, my staunch, loving little wife, and our dear children, I have given myself the task of writing a resume of facts and incidents which have come to my knowledge during a residence in South Africa since August, 1850. I will avoid personalities as much as possible and will merely mention the part I have taken personally in the works of development, especially in the Transvaal, to give an idea of the position from which I have viewed passing events. I have avoided statistics which have been amply supplied by blue-books, newspapers, and other writers. I have tried to condense this synopsis, and find that it has, nevertheless, grown in dimensions far beyond what I intended, and yet a vast amount of pertinent matter had to be left out, and I find that although most distasteful to me, in writing from memory of personal experience, the Ego is unduly prominent if perhaps unavoidable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years in South Africa: Being Some Recollections and Reflections of a Veteran Pioneer Many books have been written about South Africa. Its people, its resources, its politics, and more particularly its future as part of the British Empire, are of ever increasing interest, and no apology is needed for any writer who has had long acquaintance and intimate knowledge of the Colonies stating his experiences and opinions. The author is a man who has lived the ordinary life of a South African pioneer settler; for more than half a century his interests have been identical with those of the Colonists, and he, if anyone, is able to judge from actual experience, what may be beneficial and what has proved harmful.
