Book Some Small Fruits Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Small Fruits Classic Reprint written by R. B. Cruickshank and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-19 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Small Fruits Lack of time is usually the excuse given by farmers for not growing these fruits. There is no doubt but that this class of fruits requires care and attention, especially when a fancy marketable product is desired. Naturally, some kinds demand more application thanothers. However, many general farmers are obtaining satisfactory results with a comparatively small expenditure of time and effort. If a man can learn just when and how to perform many of the operations necessary in a small fruit patch, greater success will attend his efforts than when more time is spent, but in an unthinking, unsystematic way. The men who are obtaining returns from their berries consider them well worth the necessary care. The culture of the small fruits ls apt to vary in different localities to a greater degree than does that of the tree fruits. It will often be dependent upon special local conditions and upon the grower himself. In this bulletin only a few of the small fruits, the strawberry, rasp berry, blackberry, gooseberry, and currant, are dealt with and no attempt is made to enter into details or to touch upon special condi tions. Some of the fundamentals and a few rules in common use for the growing of these fruits are given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Success with Small Fruits Classic Reprint

Download or read book Success with Small Fruits Classic Reprint written by Allen Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Success With Small Fruits Of all small fruits the Strawberry is probably of the greatest commercial importance in this country, and on the maryland-delaware peninsula the culture has attained an importance second to no other part of the country, since soil and climate favor the production of the finest plants and the most plentiful fruiting. In no section do the plants make better root-systems, and wherever the plants grown here have gone they have made a reputation. There is no plant that so adapts itself to soils of all descriptions as the Straw berry. It is a fruit that can be grown anywhere, in sandy or clayey soils. But certain soils seem to be better adapted to certain varieties than others. While good drainage is essential, there is nothing that the Strawberry delights in more than a moist soil. Of course, it does not want standing water in the soil, but a soil that, while well-drained, has the water table only a few feet down, and in which there is a constant rise of capillary moisture, will always produce the heaviest crop. Late berries, like the Gandy, always do better on soils of this character than on high and dry soils. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Cold Storage of Small Fruits Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Cold Storage of Small Fruits Classic Reprint written by S. H. Fulton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cold Storage of Small Fruits In concluding his report Mr. Wright observes that, in his opinion, people do not quickly weary of high-class fruit, and a longer season than at present exists could be secured for many kinds if the best quality were ensured; but, apart from this, there are periods within the season of several perishable fruits - black currants, for instance - when ability to hold the pickings over, if only for a few days, would mean securing an enhanced price. The results of this test agree in general with the results obtained through the cold-storage experiments of the United States Department of Agriculture as to length of time small fruits may be kept in cold storage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Small Fruits: For Spring of 1868 It requires the most vigilant care to prevent the admixture of varieties. We could so grow and handle plants as to furnish them at much lower rates than offered, but we prefer to give to our customers a genuine article of the best quality, and in the best condition. And we are sure that it is greatly to their advantage to buy such plants, though paying a higher price for them. In purchasing plants or nursery stock of any kind, we have made it a rule not to buy of parties who advertise to sell at prices which our experience has taught us is less than that for which a good article can be produced. Plants left to take care of themselves, and to struggle through grass and weeds into a feeble growth are not worthy to be compared in value to those that are laid in, and carefully worked during the whole growing season. We have no hesitation in saying that one plant grown thus, is worth more than a. Dozen produced in the ordinary way. Our plants are grown in clay soil, which is much preferable to sand. They are not left to take root themselves, but are carefully laid in and well worked during the entire growing season. Only good healthy plants are selected for our sales, which are so handled and packed as'to secure their safe transmission to distant points in the best possible condition. With our unusually large and superior stock, our increased facilities for filling orders, and the liberal terms we offer the purchaser, we confidently expect very large sales, and solicit early orders.
