Download or read book Some Short Stories by Lord Dunsany Fantasy and Horror Classics written by Lord Dunsany and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Dunsany was one of Ireland's finest writers. At the peak of his career he was a true literary celebrity, spending time with authors such as W. B. Yeats and Rudyard Kipling, and publishing over sixty books. Arthur C. Clarke called him “one of the greatest writers of [the 20th] century,” and H. P. Lovecraft described him as being “unexcelled in the sorcery of crystalline singing prose, and supreme in the creation of a gorgeous and languorous world of incandescently exotic vision.” Collected here are some of Dunsany's greatest tales, including 'The Magician', 'The Field Where the Satyrs Dance' and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anglo-Irish fantaisiste Lord Dunsany (1878-1957) was immensely prolific. Author of more than a dozen novels, hundreds of stories, essays, and poems, and more than fifty plays, he infused every single work with his unique blend of fantasy, weirdness, and subtle humor. S. T. Joshi and Martin Andersson, two of the leading authorities on Dunsany's work, have spent years in unearthing uncollected works by Dunsany, and the present volume is the result of their labors. Here we find stories set in Dunsany's native Ireland, evoking the real or imagined ghosts, leprechauns, and spirits that haunt that ancient land. Other tales are set in locales around the world, reflecting Dunsany's far-flung travels through the Middle East and Asia. The core of the book is a presentation of an untitled short story collection that Dunsany assembled in 1956 but that was never published. Here we find some of the lost jewels of Dunsany's output: "The Dwarf HolObolos and the Sword Hogbiter," a splendid sword-and-sorcery tale that evokes such early masterpieces as "The Sword of Welleran"; "The Dance at Weirdmoor Castle," a delicate tale of ghosts; "The Stolen Power," in which the horrors of the atomic age are pungently expressed; and "A Goat in Trousers," a story of metempsychosis treading the borderline of humor and horror. Also included in this volume are several previously unpublished tales, found among the manuscripts at Dunsany Castle in County Meath, Ireland. No reader can fully appreciate the prodigal fertility of Lord Dunsany's imagination without appreciating the diverse and unfailingly entertaining stories in this volume.

Book excerpt: A new edition of the Fantasy Tales that inspired J.R.R. Tolkien and H.P. Lovecraft A pioneer in the realm of imaginative literature, Lord Dunsany has gained a cult following for his influence on modern fantasy literature, including such authors as J.R.R. Tolkien and H. P. Lovecraft. This unique collection of short stories ranges over five decades of work. Liberal selections of earlier tales—including the entire Gods of Pegana as well as such notable works as "Idle Days of the Yann" and "The Fortress Unvanquishable, Save for Sacnoth"—are followed by memorable later tales, including several about the garrulous traveler Joseph Jorkens and the outrageous murder tale "The Two Bottles of Relish." Throughout, the stories are united by Dunsany's cosmic vision, his impeccable and mellifluous prose, and his distinctively Irish sense of whimsy. Here published for the first time by Penguin Classics, this edition is the only annotated version of Dunsany's short stories. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Book excerpt: Fifty-One Tales Fantasy / Horror Short Stories by Lord Dunsany Fifty-One Tales is a collection of fantasy short stories by Irish writer Lord Dunsany, considered a major influence on the work of J. R. R. Tolkien, H. P. Lovecraft, Ursula K. Le Guin and others. The first editions, in hardcover, were published simultaneously in London and New York by Elkin Mathews and Mitchell Kennerly, respectively, in April, 1915. The British and American editions differ in that they arrange the material slightly differently and that each includes a story the other omits; "The Poet Speaks with Earth" in the British version, and "The Mist" in the American version. The collection's significance in the history of fantasy literature was recognized by its republication (as The Food of Death: Fifty-One Tales) by the Newcastle Publishing Company as the third volume of the Newcastle Forgotten Fantasy Library in September, 1974. The Newcastle edition used the American version of the text. The book collects fifty-one short stories by the author.

Book excerpt: Most fantasy enthusiasts consider Lord Dunsany one of the most significant forces in modern fantasy; his influences have been observed in the works of H.P. Lovecraft, L. Sprague de Camp, Fritz Leiber, Jack Vance, and many other modern writers. Time and the Gods is Dunsany at his peak of his talent. The stories here are a lush tapestry of language, conjuring images of people, places, and things which cannot possibly exist, yet somehow ring true. Together with Dunsany's other major collections, The Book of Wonder, A Dreamer's Tales and Tales of Three Hemispheres, they are a necessary part of any fantasy collection.

Book excerpt: A collection of fables, allegories, and satires, short, sometimes slight, and very well done. They are unusual bits of imaginative writing, dramatic, condensed, incisive, and of a kind to stay in the memory; the use of words is masterly. A book to pick up and read occasionally, as the philosophy, taken in large draughts, is a bit depressing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I do not know where I may be when this preface is read. As I write it in August 1916, I am at Ebrington Barracks, Londonderry, recovering from a slight wound. But it does not greatly matter where I am; my dreams are here before you amongst the following pages; and writing in a day when life is cheap, dreams seem to me all the dearer, the only things that survive. Just now the civilization of Europe seems almost to have ceased, and nothing seems to grow in her torn fields but death, yet this is only for a while and dreams will come back again and bloom as of old, all the more radiantly for this terrible ploughing, as the flowers will bloom again where the trenches are and the primroses shelter in shell-holes for many seasons, when weeping Liberty has come home to Flanders. To some of you in America this may seem an unnecessary and wasteful quarrel, as other people's quarrels often are; but it comes to this that though we are all killed there will be songs again, but if we were to submit and so survive there could be neither songs nor dreams, nor any joyous free things any more. And do not regret the lives that are wasted amongst us, or the work that the dead would have done, for war is no accident that man's care could have averted, but is as natural, though not as regular, as the tides; as well regret the things that the tide has washed away, which destroys and cleanses and crumbles, and spares the minutest shells. And now I will write nothing further about our war, but offer you these books of dreams from Europe as one throws things of value, if only to oneself, at the last moment out of a burning house.

Lewis he served during the great war. Collected here are thirteen stories of that terrible war. Dunsany saw the horrors of war and he was uniquely qualified to capture the experience in prose. "I have chosen a title that shall show that I make no claim for this book to be "up-to-date." As the first title indicates, I hoped to show, to as many as might to read my words, something of the extent of the wrongs that the people of France had suffered. There is no such need any longer. The tales, so far as they went, I gather together here for the few that seem to read my books in England." —Lord Dunsany
