Book Some Revolutions and Other Diplomatic Experiences Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Revolutions and Other Diplomatic Experiences Classic Reprint written by Henry George Elliot and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Revolutions and Other Diplomatic Experiences These Recollections were commenced soon after Sir Henry Elliot's retirement from the Diplomatic Service, and were printed, for private circulation only, in the year 1900. Most of his correspondence previous to 1870 was destroyed in that year by the fire which laid in ashes the British Embassy at Constantinople, together with a great part of the city. Fortunately, however, a diary kept during the time of his missions to Naples and Athens was saved, and his brother the Hon. George Elliot, who was private secretary to Lord John Russell, and to whom he wrote regularly during the Neapolitan troubles, preserved his letters. Part of the account of the second mission to Greece is derived from letters to his wife. The style of the book is therefore intimate and colloquial, no thought of publication having entered the writer's mind. The very frank expressions of disapproval called forth by the conduct and measures of some of the Italian "Liberators" may possibly come as a shock to those whose ardour for the cause of Italian Unity is such as to incline them to overlook the questionable means which were occasionally resorted to on its behalf. Book Revolutions a Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Revolutions a Very Short Introduction written by Jack A. Goldstone and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the 20th and 21st century revolutions have become more urban, often less violent, but also more frequent and more transformative of the international order. Whether it is the revolutions against Communism in Eastern Europe and the USSR; the "color revolutions" across Asia, Europe and North Africa; or the religious revolutions in Iran, Afghanistan, and Syria; today's revolutions are quite different from those of the past. Modern theories of revolution have therefore replaced the older class-based theories with more varied, dynamic, and contingent models of social and political change. This new edition updates the history of revolutions, from Classical Greece and Rome to the Revolution of Dignity in the Ukraine, with attention to the changing types and outcomes of revolutionary struggles. It also presents the latest advances in the theory of revolutions, including the issues of revolutionary waves, revolutionary leadership, international influences, and the likelihood of revolutions to come. This volume provides a brief but comprehensive introduction to the nature of revolutions and their role in global history"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What were the antecedents and beginnings of modern political ideas among the Turks? Dr. Mardin seeks to describe the conditions which produced these ideas, among them the influence of the Enlightenment, the changes in the fabric of Turkish society, the combination of the traditionalist Ottoman world-view with a modern Western outlook. How a modern intelligentsia was formed in the Ottoman Empire, first by the Patriotic Alliance, then under the banner of the Young Ottoman Society, is the theme of this work. Serif Mardin, who has been a research fellow at Harvard and Princeton, has returned to Tukrey for further research and teaching. Princeton Oriental Studies, 21. Originally published in 1962. • Author : Gary J. Bass
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2009-10-13
  • ISBN : 0307279871
  • Pages : 529 pages

Download or read book Freedom s Battle written by Gary J. Bass and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gripping and important book brings alive over two hundred years of humanitarian interventions. Freedom’s Battle illuminates the passionate debates between conscience and imperialism ignited by the first human rights activists in the 19th century, and shows how a newly emergent free press galvanized British, American, and French citizens to action by exposing them to distant atrocities. Wildly romantic and full of bizarre enthusiasms, these activists were pioneers of a new political consciousness. And their legacy has much to teach us about today’s human rights crises.
