Book Some Research Problems in the Steady State Burning of Composite Solid Propellants

Download or read book Some Research Problems in the Steady State Burning of Composite Solid Propellants written by D. W. Blair and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper outlines a number of basic problems in the theory of steady-state combustion of solid propellants, particularly of the ammonium perchlorate composite type. It represents an extension of the earlier research at Princeton that led to a theoretical burning rate law for composite propellants that was based on the concept of granular diffusion flame. This paper is in the nature of a progress report in which the new experimental approaches are described, and some puzzling difficulties are analyzed. Specifically, the experiments deal with three topics: refinement of methods for measuring burning rate; the role of radiative energy transfer in the burning process; and the connection between oxidizer particle size and the b parameter in the above-mentioned theoretical burning rate law.

Book Theory of Solid Propellant Nonsteady Combustion

Download or read book Theory of Solid Propellant Nonsteady Combustion written by Vasily B. Novozhilov and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-08-21 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite significant developments and widespread theoretical and practical interest in the area of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion for the last fifty years, a comprehensive and authoritative text on the subject has not been available. Theory of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion fills this gap by summarizing theoretical approaches to the problem within the framework of the Zeldovich-Novozhilov (ZN-) theory. This book contains equations governing unsteady combustion and applies them systematically to a wide range of problems of practical interest. Theory conclusions are validated, as much as possible, against available experimental data. Theory of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion provides an accurate up-to-date account and perspectives on the subject and is also accompanied by a website hosting solutions to problems in the book.

Book Research on Non steady Burning of Solid Propellants with Special Reference to Combustion Instability

Download or read book Research on Non steady Burning of Solid Propellants with Special Reference to Combustion Instability written by Martin Summerfield and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall objective of the research program has been to study the non-steady burning characteristics of solid rocket propellants, both experimentally and theoretically, to establish a basis for avoiding combustion instability in rocket motors and for predicting thrust transients during motor ignition and extinction. A new non-steady burning model for composite propellants was formulated in which the key element, the non-steady heat feedback law from the gaseous flame, was shown to be a function of the instantaneous pressure and burning rate. Solutions to this model showed that burning stability is largely determined by the exothermicity of reactions in the immediate neighborhood of the propellant surface and by the sensitivity of burning rate to surface temperature. The predictions of the model were generally confirmed by T-motor and rapid pressurization experiments. The non-steady burning model was also used to analyze L-star combustion instability in rocket motors and to demonstrate the feasibility of a novel mechanism for suppression of combustion instability by aluminum addition to a propellant. Book Turbulent Boundary Layer Analysis and Experimental Investigation of Erosive Burning Problem of Composite Solid Propellants

Download or read book Turbulent Boundary Layer Analysis and Experimental Investigation of Erosive Burning Problem of Composite Solid Propellants written by Mohan K. Razdan and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequently encountered phenomenon of erosive burning of composite solid propellants in rocket motors. Both theoretical and experimental studies were undertaken. In the theoretical model, the propellant burning process was described by considering a steady, two-dimensional, chemically reacting, turbulent boundary layer over a propellant surface. The diffusion-controlled gas-phase chemical reaction was modeled on the basis of the eddy-break-up concept. The theoretical model, comprised of a set of partial differential equations, was solved numerically. In the experimental work, a flat composite-propellant slab was burned in a test chamber by the flow of hot combustion gases which formed a turbulent boundary layer over the surface of the propellant. The burning rate of the propellant was measured by a high-speed motion picture technique at various pressures and free-stream velocities. Comparison of the theoretical results with the experimental data, obtained from the present study and that obtained from existing literature, showed a close agreement.

Book Statistical Analysis of Steady State Combustion of Composite Solid Propellants

Download or read book Statistical Analysis of Steady State Combustion of Composite Solid Propellants written by R. L. Glick and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general method for extracting particle size dependent information from experimental rate/formulation data was developed from the statistical methodology. This technique was employed to correlate the data bases of Miller. Results showed that, by employing an interaction parameter of 4, both additive and additive free data could be correlated to standard error of estimate below 10.5%. The effect of steady radiant energy deposition on steady and nonsteady burning was explored. Results showed that if the radiant energy deposited in the reactive zones is negligible (an excellent assumption for low signature propellants) the effect of radiant energy deposition can always be accounted for by substituting the radiation augmented initial temperature for the initial propellant temperature.

Book Solid Propellant Combustion Mechanism Research

Download or read book Solid Propellant Combustion Mechanism Research written by M. Summerfield and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The annual report highlights the progress being made on several concurrent solid propellant combustion mechanism researches. Studies of nitrocellulose-base propellants have produced a broad range of experimental results for platonized and unplatonized propellants. The corresponding mathematical models consider the flame zone processes controlling temperature sensitivity, extinguishment limits, and burning rate. The analytical studies of ignition and burning of porous propellants are producing good agreement with data, new insights into the combustion processes, and establishing regimes where steady-state burning rates are achievable. The work of nonsteady burning has progressed to the point that rocket motor transients can be predicted and dynamic burning rates in a variable throat area, low L* motor can be measured; this work has progressed from the research phase to the development stage. Sub- micron pyrophoric aluminum is being investigated as a means of increasing propellant burning rate.
