Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Hebrews: Their Political, Social and Religious Development and Their Contribution to World Betterment This volume seeks to make clear the important place of the Hebrew people in the history of nations and to justify the se lection of their history, as set forth in the Old Testament, as an introduction to the larger subject. It seems deplorable that so many thoughtful people of today, old and young alike, take little or no interest in the Bible or in the fascinating history which it records. The reason is largely, to be found in the fact that they failed in their formative years to become acquainted with the Bible in its true values, its attractiveness and its practical power. There seems to be a place for a compact, comprehensive outline of Biblical history and literature, simple enough in its expression and execution to hold the attention of the growing mind, and yet complete enough to meet the reasonable needs of any mind. Hebrew history and literature is a theme of great importance to the one who would really know his Bible. It can be mastered rapidly. Too much time is given, as a rule, to details of relatively slight consequence to the exclusion of those which have far reaching importance. This volume aims to indicate a proper balance of attention. It also seeks to enable the student to get rapidly to the heart of the subject and to View it frorri all essential standpoints, that of universal history, that of the development of the Hebrews, and that of permanent and personal values. The supreme defect of the religious thinking of the average man or woman of today is its narrowness. Every religiously-minded person needs to be familiar with the whole Bible and with the Bible as a whole. This knowledge need not be reserved for ministers or scholars. It mav be the possession of any thoughtful student of religion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Student's History of the Hebrews There are indications on every side of a deepening interest in religious education, and earnest efforts are being made for the improvement of methods in this important field. One of the Chief obstacles to progress is the dearth of good textbooks. This book is the result of many years of experience in teaching Bible Classes consisting of pupils from seventeen to twenty years of age in a secular school, and adult Classes in Church schools and community schools of religious education. It is believed to be especially well adapted to the needs of similar Classes in other schools, as well as to the use of the general reader who desires a brief guide to accompany Old Testament study. Book A Short History of the Hebrews to the Roman Period Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of the Hebrews to the Roman Period Classic Reprint written by Robert L. Ottley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Hebrews to the Roman Period HE present Short History is an attempt to furnish teachers or students of the Old Testament with a sketch of the actual course of Hebrew history, somewhat more con sistent with the present state of our knowledge than the text books now in use. The book presupposes, and is intended to encourage, a careful and intelligent study of the text of the Bible. With a brief outline of the history in his hands, a thoughtful student is probably best left to himself. In regard to many points of detail, he must freely use his own judgment, and the broad lessons, moral and religious, of the history, may be trusted to impress themselves on his mind without the aid of a manual. Book The Origin and Growth of the Hebrew Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Origin and Growth of the Hebrew Religion Classic Reprint written by Henry Thatcher Fowler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Growth of the Hebrew Religion Teachers who have not been accustomed to send their pupils to the Biblical writings to gather data may be surprised to find that even superior students will at first report far-fetched inferences rather than the plain facts contained in a given passage. With practice and guidance they will usually learn, after awhile, to find the definite points pertinent to the topic under investigation. Working together in the class will be of service at the outset, but this should not be allowed to take the place Of independent work for too long a time. It does not fall within the scope of the present volume to discuss the order Of growth Of the Old Testament. The general order adopted as the basis for tracing the history Of Hebrew religious ideas and practices is indicated in the brief chrono logical table Of Hebrew literature, following the list Of principal dates in Hebrew history, at the opening of the book. Reference is made in Appen dix I to several of the standard works that discuss the literary history Of the Old Testament. Book Early Religious Poetry of the Hebrews Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early Religious Poetry of the Hebrews Classic Reprint written by Edward George King and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Religious Poetry of the Hebrews The title Early Religious Poetry of the Hebrews needs a further definition. It is intended to embrace the Poetry of Old Testament times as distinguished from the Poetry of the Synagogue. This will fix our period. But what are we to under stand by Religious Poetry? The Poet is the man whose whole being is in touch with those voices of God that we call Nature. He may, or he may not, be a religious man. In other words, he may, or he may not, recognise the Source of those voices. The Prophet, on the other hand, is the man whose whole being is in touch with the voices of God in Humanity. He must be, more or less, a poet, in the sense in which we have defined the word, but his chief sphere will be the poetry of life. His message will necessarily be conditioned by the age in which he lives. He has his treasure in an earthen vessel and he prophesies in part. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hebrew People, Vol. 2: Or the History and Religion of the Israelites, From the Origin of the Nation The second part of the sacred annals, which is now presented to the public, comprises the History and Religion of the Hebrew People, from the Origin of the Nation to the Time of Christ. In the prepara tion of this portion of the work, the Author has steadily kept in view the purpose which he announced in the Preface to the preceding volume; namely, to present a complete view of the history and religion of this nation in a decidedly religious manner. In the prose cution of this attempt he has encountered great, and, in some respects, unexpected, dificulty. To arrange and condense into a limited compass the Civil and religious history of a great people during seventeen centuries, would, under any circumstances, be a work sufl'iciently onerous; but this has been greatly increased by nume rous collateral subjects, of the most embarrassing charac ter, with which the history of the Jews is involved. The most important questions in theology, the most recon dite inquiries in ancient history, the most perplexing cases of Biblical criticism, the most difficult problems in early geography, - a]l obtruded themselves upon the attention of the writer; and required to be investigated, adjusted, reconciled, and wrought up into a homogeneous narrative. Beyond all the embarrassments from these 'sources, has been that occasioned by the irreligious and unscriptural tendency of the productions of cer tain authors, whose great talents, extensive learning. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Origin and Growth of Religion: As Illustrated by the Religion of the Ancient Hebrews MY purpose in these Lectures is to give a short history, as clear as I can make it, Of the Religion of the Old Testament. By this I mean that I have endeavoured to group the religious material contained in that book in chronological order, and to trace the historical develop ment, which then becomes visible, from its beginning to its end. This beginning has been but lightly touched upon, partly because Of its extreme Obscurity and partly because of my own insufficient equipment to deal ade quately with so complex a problem; but more space has thus been won for the delineation of that phase Of the Jewish religion in which it stood at the close of the Old Testament period, and on the lines of which it was destined to develop for many subsequent centuries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Hebrew Story: Its Historical Background The Faculty of Bangor Theological Seminary wish to express their pleasure in the course of lectures delivered in November, 1903, by the Rev. John P. Peters, D.D., of New York City, upon the theme, "Early Hebrew Story, Its Historical Background." The broad and ripe scholarship, the fresh knowledge of details, the constructive temper and the reverent Christian spirit which were always manifest gave these lectures exceptional worth not only for the student body, but for the large company of thoughtful people who heard them. We earnestly hope that these lectures will be published, for, while opinions may differ about some of the conclusions arrived at, we believe that the course is adapted to promote biblical scholarship, and that their expert knowledge and positive constructive tone give them exceptional value at the present time. It will afford us especial satisfaction to have them associated in their publication with the Bond Foundation in this Seminary. Book The Epistle to the Hebrews

Download or read book The Epistle to the Hebrews written by D D and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistle to the Hebrews: Its Doctrine and Significance IT is only of late years that anything like an adequate study has been bestowed on the Epistle to the Hebrews. A few great passages of the Epistle have always been among the most familiar in scripture, but even professed theologians have concerned themselves little with its teaching as a whole. This neglect has been partly due to the character of the argument, which is cast in an archaic mould, and often impresses a modern reader as barren and artificial. To a still greater extent the Epistle has suffered from the mistaken views that have prevailed as to its nature and purpose. It has been commonly regarded as a mere appendix to the Pauline writings, or as a tract that has survived from a forgotten controversy, or at best as the manifesto of some isolated sect. A work that appeared to count for so little in the main development of Christian thought has not un naturally been pushed into the background. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Hebrews Translated, Vol. 1 of 2 The selection of the present work as the first in this series which deals with the Old Testament has been made with special reference to the actual condition of critical studies in England. Long and arduous efforts have been required to naturalise Old Testament criticism among us, but our students still find great difficulty in mastering methods and assimilating results. The deliberateness of Professor Kittel's procedure and the comparative conservatism of his conclusions (so far as they are presented here) should ensure his work a cordial reception among us, while the attention which he has given to archaeological data furnish one more proof that Old Testament criticism has passed for good and all out of the purely literary stage which lasted from Eichhorn to Colenso.
