Book Common Problems in Low and Medium Energy Nuclear Physics

Download or read book Common Problems in Low and Medium Energy Nuclear Physics written by B. Castel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1978 Advanced Study Institute in Nuclear Theory devoted to common problems in Low and Intermediate Energy Nuclear Physics was held at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada from August 21 through September 1, 1978. The present volume contains the text of 25 lectures and seminars given at the Institute and illustrates the directions that nuclear physicists are taking in the evolution toward a unified picture of low, medium and high energy phenomena. Recent attempts at unifying the weak and electromagnetic inter action in particle physics have led naturally to question their role in nuclei. The success of the quark model at interpreting the new resonances in high energy physics makes it imperative to consider their role in dealing with nuclear physics problems at the microscopic level. Is our present knowledge of the nuclear potential consistent' with recent experimental evidence at low and medium energy and can it correlate meaningfully nuclear and pion physics phenomena? These are some of the fundamental questions debated in this book attempting to offer a consistent picture of the nuclear system as it emerges using the electromagnetic, weak and strong interaction probe. The lectures and seminars forming the present volume have been divided into four sections dealing with a) the weak interaction, b) quarks and nuclear structure, c) physics of electrons, protons and kaons, and finally d) pion physics.

Book Science Of Low Energy Nuclear Reaction The A Comprehensive Compilation Of Evidence And Explanations About Cold Fusion

Download or read book Science Of Low Energy Nuclear Reaction The A Comprehensive Compilation Of Evidence And Explanations About Cold Fusion written by Edmund Storms and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007-07-09 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important discoveries of this century — cold fusion — was summarily rejected by science and the media before sufficient evidence had been accumulated to make a rational judgment possible. Enough evidence is now available to show that this rejection was wrong and that the discovery of a new source of clean energy may help solve some serious problems currently facing mankind. The book catalogues and evaluates this evidence and shows why the initial reaction was driven more by self-interest than fact. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the history and science behind the cold fusion controversy. In addition to the technological importance of the effect, the discovery of new ways to initiate nuclear reactions without producing significant radiation reveals an entirely new mechanism operating at the nuclear level in solid material. This new mechanism has important implications for an understanding of many other phenomena.

Book Intermediate Energy Nuclear Physics

Download or read book Intermediate Energy Nuclear Physics written by A.S. Iljinov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intermediate-Energy Nuclear Physics is devoted to discussing the interaction between hadrons with nuclei, which leads to the emission of particles during an intranuclear cascade and subsequent decay of a highly excited residual nucleus. Experimental data and the methods and results of the calculation of probabilities of various processes initiated by intermediate-energy hadrons in nuclei are set forth and discussed. The potential for obtaining information on the structure and properties of nuclei by comparing experimental data with theoretical results is analyzed. New issues, such as analytic methods for the solution of kinetic equations describing the cascade, nuclear absorption of hadrons from bound states of hadronic atoms, interaction of antinucleons with nuclei, multifragmentation of highly excited residual nuclei, and polarization phenomena, are discussed in detail. The book also demonstrates hadron-nucleus interactions that bridge the gap between low-energy and heavy ions physics. It is an interesting reference for nuclear physicists and other researchers interested in the analysis of problems associated with the evolution of the early (hot) universe, neutron stars and supernovas, after-burning of radioactive waste in nuclear energy installations, and electronuclear energy breeding.

Book Colorado School of Mines Low Energy Nuclear Physics Project

Download or read book Colorado School of Mines Low Energy Nuclear Physics Project written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major accomplishment of this project in the past year is the completion of a fairly comprehensive paper describing the survey of radiative capture reactions of protons on light nuclei at low energies. In addition we have completed a preliminary set of measurements of (d, p)/(d, [alpha]) cross section ratios on the charge symmetric nuclei 6Li and 1°B as a test of the Oppenheimer-Phillips effect. While the 6Li data remain inconclusive, the 1°B data show solid evidence for the Oppenheimer-Phillips enhancement of the (d, p) reaction relative to the (d, [alpha]) reaction for deuteron bombarding energies below about 100 keV. We have continued our investigation of fusion reaction products from deuterium-metal systems at room temperatures with the startling observation of intense burst of energetic charged particles from deuterium gas loaded thin titaium foils subject to non-equilibrium thermal and electrical conditions. We have completed two projects involving the application of the low energy particle accelerator to material science problems; firstly a study of the transformation of crystalline to amorphous Fe-Zr systems by proton irradiation and secondly the effects of ion bombardment on the critical temperature of YBCO high-temperature superconductors. Finally we have made progress in several instrumentation projects which will be used in some of the up-coming measurements of nuclear cross sections at very low energies.

Book Problems and Solutions in Nuclear and Particle Physics

Download or read book Problems and Solutions in Nuclear and Particle Physics written by Sergio Petrera and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents 140 problems with solutions in introductory nuclear and particle physics. Rather than being only partially provided or simply outlined, as is typically the case in textbooks on nuclear and particle physics, all solutions are explained in detail. Furthermore, different possible approaches are compared. Some of the problems concern the estimation of quantities in realistic experimental situations. In general, solving the problems does not require a substantial mathematics background, and the focus is instead on developing the reader’s sense of physics in order to work out the problem in question. Consequently, sections on experimental methods and detection methods constitute a major part of the book. Given its format and content, it offers a valuable resource, not only for undergraduate classes but also for self-assessment in preparation for graduate school entrance and other examinations.

Book excerpt: Few Particle Problems in the Nuclear Interaction emerged from the International Conference on Few Particle Problems in the Nuclear Interaction held in Los Angeles, from August 28-September 1, 1972. The aim of the conference was to discuss recent developments in low and medium energy few-particle problems. This included the fields of the nuclear three-body problem; nuclear forces (in particular, three-body forces); symmetries; and the interaction of mesons, leptons, and photons with few-nucleon systems. Special sessions were also devoted to the application of the results and techniques of the few-particle research to the problems of other fields, in particular nuclear structure and astrophysics. The conference was organized into nine plenary sessions and 13 parallel sessions. This volume contains 184 papers presented during the nine sessions on the following topics: the nucleon-nucleon interaction; three-body forces; hypernuclear systems; symmetries; three-body problems; multiparticle reactions; proposed studies of few-nucleon systems with meson factories; few-nucleon systems and leptons, mesons, and photons; and applications.

Book Nuclear Physics With Effective Field Theory Proceedings Of The Joint Caltech int Workshop

Download or read book Nuclear Physics With Effective Field Theory Proceedings Of The Joint Caltech int Workshop written by Ubirajara Van Kolck and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-09-28 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective field theory (EFT), a technique used extensively in particle physics, provides a framework for systematically describing nuclear systems in a way consistent with quantum chromodynamics, the underlying theory of strong interactions. Because it offers the possibility of a unified description of all low-energy processes involving nucleons, it has the potential to become the foundation of conventional nuclear physics.Since the early 1990's when Weinberg applied the techniques of EFT to multiple-nucleon systems, significant developments have been made. However, serious obstacles have also been encountered. This book contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Nuclear Physics with Effective Field Theory, held in the Kellogg Radiation Laboratory at Caltech on the 26th and 27th of February 1998, which specifically addressed those issues. Physicists from different areas of sub-atomic physics gathered in an attempt to arrive at a consistent power counting scheme for the nucleon-nucleon interaction, a first step toward dealing with few-nucleon systems and ultimately nuclear matter and finite nuclei.

Book Nuclear Physics at Low Renormalization Group Resolution

Download or read book Nuclear Physics at Low Renormalization Group Resolution written by Anthony J. Tropiano and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-energy nuclear physics encompasses the physics of many-body systems of protons and neutrons (nucleons) ranging from atomic nuclei to neutron stars. Experimental facilities, such as the Facility of Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), seek to answer overarching questions central to our understanding of atomic nuclei, astrophysics, and fundamental symmetries, such as the origin of heavy elements. Theoretical approaches face the challenge of describing this wide range of physics starting from the force between nucleons. Traditionally, low-energy nuclear theory is split into structure and reaction theory, where the former deals with the static properties of nuclei and the latter with dynamic nuclear processes. Understanding the interplay of reaction and structure theory is critical for reliable predictions and analysis of FRIB experiments. The renormalization group (RG) allows for consistent treatments of reaction and structure. RG transformations continuously shift the resolution scale of structure and reaction components (i.e., wave functions and reaction operators) under a specified scheme, where the resolution scale corresponds to the largest momentum of low-energy wave functions, and the scheme reflects the details of the starting Hamiltonian and RG implementation. Observable quantities are invariant under RG transformations, though structure and reaction components individually depend on the RG resolution scale and scheme. We can take advantage of this latter RG dependence by shifting the resolution scale to make complicated problems feasible. RG transformations decouple low- and high-energy scales in nuclear interactions, facilitating large-scale nuclear structure approaches that rely on many-body basis expansions. The RG has widely been applied to nuclear structure, but not to nuclear reactions or the combination of the two. RG transformations can facilitate nuclear reaction approaches by simplifying initial and final states in transition matrix elements, where RG-transformed reaction operators gain induced many-body contributions. Process-independent quantities (e.g., momentum distributions) can be extracted from experiment via a factorization of nuclear structure components and the reaction operators (the probe), but as a result of factorization, are scale and scheme dependent. The RG provides a natural tool for handling this scale and scheme dependence, which is crucial for interpreting experiments and comparing extracted quantities to theory. This thesis demonstrates each of these points by using the similarity RG (SRG) to transform chiral effective field theory (EFT) or phenomenological interactions, and their associated operators, to low RG resolution. We explore aspects of operator evolution that have particular relevance in the context of scale and scheme dependence of nuclear processes. These aspects include SRG implementations based on the Magnus expansion, band- versus block-diagonal operator flow, universality for chiral EFT interactions and associated operators with different regularization schemes, and the impact of factorization arising from scale separation. We show how the features of short-range correlation phenomenology are cleanly identified at low RG resolution using simple two-body operators and local-density approximations with uncorrelated wave functions, all of which can be systematically generalized. We verify that the experimental consequences to date follow directly at low RG resolution from well-established properties of nuclear interactions. We describe the quasi-deuteron model at low RG resolution and determine the Levinger constant, which is proportional to the ratio of nuclear photo-absorption to that for photo-disintegration of a deuteron. Implications for consistently extracting spectroscopic factors in electron-induced proton knock-out reactions are discussed. The results of this thesis contribute to a broader effort to model processes relevant to FRIB, such as knock-out or break-up reactions.

Book The Nucleon nucleon Interaction and the Nuclear Many body Problem

Download or read book The Nucleon nucleon Interaction and the Nuclear Many body Problem written by Gerald E. Brown and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of some key developments in the understanding of the nucleon-nucleon interaction and nuclear many-body theory. The main problems at the level of meson exchange physics have been solved, and we have an effective field theory using a phenomenological interaction pioneered by Achim Schwenk and Scott Bogner, which is nearly universally accepted as a unique low-momentum interaction that includes all experimental data to date. This understanding is based on a multi-step development in which different scientific insights and a wide range of physical and mathematical methodologies fed into each other. It is best appreciated by looking at the different 'steps along the way', starting with the pioneering work of Brueckner and his collaborators that was just as necessary and important as the insightful masterly improvements to Brueckner's theory by Hans Bethe and his students. Moving on from there, the off-shell effects that bedeviled Bethe's work — which had resulted in the 1963 Reference Spectrum Method — were treated relatively accurately by introducing an energy gap between initial bound states and an intermediate state. With their influential 1967 paper, Brown and Kuo prepared the effective field theory. Later, the introduction of 'Brown-Rho scaling' deepened understanding of saturation in the many-body system and fed directly into recent work on carbon-14 dating.
