Enjoy and, if you wish, perform them yourself! Reviews of Paul's work: "Like an alternative Ferris Bueller…the escalating web of chaos is skilfully scripted in the vein of a classic film comedy. ****" - The Scotsman "Paul Richards brings energy in abundance and charmingly, wittily, tells his tale, but the tale is a cautionary one: ignore strains upon your mental health at your peril. It is most definitely a Fringe show for our times and is highly recommended." - FringeReview "Richards seems to have comic energy to burn…he makes Lee Evans seem narcoleptic by comparison. The result is mostly laugh-out-loud, but punctuated with sorrow. Ingeniously written and powerfully performed. " - The Swindonian "Such an amazing performance. A must-experience show." - BBC Radio "This riotously funny show might just be the funniest hour you spend at this year's fringe. Everyone was in stitches throughout." - The Write Angle

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning, critically acclaimed comedy writer Paul Richards proudly presents his two short novels in one lovely volume... A BAND AT SEA "Before you say you're going to leave this band, before you say that playing covers is musical prostitution, before you say that every creative cell in your body has been destroyed by our 80s medley of Bros and A-Ha songs, before you say you hate our choice of tunes so much that you're tempted to not listen to another piece of music ever again, before you say you'd rather be dead than play another 50th birthday party gig...don't forget: this band is all you have." Alex. 41. He's lost his flat, his girlfriend, his parents and his dignity. Still, at least he's got his bandmates, yes? It's just a shame one of them doesn't talk and the other one has forced them to play a six-month residency in the middle of the sea. A fast-paced comedic tale about ambition, love and why being in a band is the greatest thing ever. Contains plenty of swear words. and... HAVE YOURSELF A RIDICULOUS LITTLE CHRISTMAS Robert, a struggling mid-management executive really, really gets excited by the magic of Christmas. His wife no longer loves him, his favourite (adopted) uncle has died and a man he was in charge of has been eaten by a fox at a conference in Banbury. Still, by Christmas Day, everything will be fine, yeah? A delightful, warm, short festive tale about the tingling sensations of all things Yuletide. It does contain a little swearing, but not too much. Basically, it's really lovely but not a fairytale or anything, so not for the kids, and Paul wrote it in 2014 so it does reference the Queen's speech and the iPhone 6.

Book We Would Have Played for Nothing

Download or read book We Would Have Played for Nothing written by Fay Vincent and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-03-19 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Former Major League Baseball commissioner Fay Vincent brings together a stellar roster of ballplayers from the 1950s and 1960s in this wonderful new history of the game. Whitey Ford, Duke Snider, Carl Erskine, Bill Rigney, and Ralph Branca tell stories about baseball in New York when the Yankees dominated and seemed to play either the Dodgers or the Giants in every World Series. By the end of the fifties, the two National League teams had relocated to California, as baseball expanded across the country. Hall of Fame pitcher Robin Roberts, Braves mainstay Lew Burdette, home-run king Harmon Killebrew, Cubs slugger Billy Williams, and Hall of Famers Brooks Robinson and Frank Robinson share great stories about milestone events, from Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier on the field to Frank Robinson doing the same in the dugout. They remember the teammates and opponents they admired, including Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Warren Spahn, Don Newcombe, and Ernie Banks. For anyone who grew up watching baseball in the 1950s and 1960s, or for anyone who wonders what it was like in the days when ballplayers negotiated their own contracts and worked real jobs in the off-season, this is a book to cherish.

Book Brooks The Biography of Brooks Robinson

Download or read book Brooks The Biography of Brooks Robinson written by Doug Wilson and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the 2014 Casey Award! Selected by the National Baseball Hall of Fame for the 2014 author's series Brooks Robinson is one of baseball's most transcendent and revered players. He won a record sixteen straight Gold Gloves at third base, led one of the best teams of the era, and is often cited as the greatest fielder in baseball history. Credited with almost single-handedly winning the 1970 World Series, this MVP was immortalized in a Normal Rockwell painting. A wholesome player and role model, Brooks honored the game of baseball not only with his play but with his class and character off the field. Author of The Bird: The Life and Legacy of Mark Fidrych, Doug Wilson returns to baseball's Golden Age to detail the birth of a new franchise through the man who came to symbolize it as one of baseball's most beloved players. Through numerous interviews with people from every part of the legendary player's life, Wilson reveals never-before-reported information to illuminate Brooks's remarkable skill and warm personality. Brooks takes readers back to an era when players fought for low-paying yearly contracts, spanning the turbulent 60s and 70s and into the dawning of the free agent era. He was elected to the MLB All-Century Team and as president of the MLB Players Alumni, Brooks continues to influence today's baseball players. In the current climate of astronomic salaries, steroids, off-field troubles, and heroes who let down their fans, Brooks reminds baseball fans of the honor and glory at the heart of America's favorite pastime.

Book Theatre on Terror

Download or read book Theatre on Terror written by Ariane de Waal and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a moment of intense uncertainty surrounding the means, ends, and limits of (countering) terrorism, this study approaches the recent theatres of war through theatrical stagings of terror. Theatre on Terror: Subject Positions in British Drama charts the terrain of contemporary subjectivities both ‘at home’ and ‘on the front line’. Beyond examining the construction and contestation of subject positions in domestic and (sub)urban settings, the book follows border-crossing figures to the shifting battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan. What emerges through the analysis of twenty-one plays is not a dichotomy but a dialectics of ‘home’ and ‘front’, where fluid, uncontainable subjects are constantly pushing the contours of conflict. Revising the critical consensus that post-9/11 drama primarily engages with ‘the real’, Ariane de Waal argues that these plays navigate the complexities of the discourse – rather than the historical or social realities – of war and terrorism. British ‘theatre on terror’ negotiates, inflects, and participates in the discursive circulation of stories, idioms, controversies, testimonies, and pieces of (mis)information in the face of global insecurities.

Book A Calculus of Color

Download or read book A Calculus of Color written by Robert Kuhn McGregor and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1947, as the integration of Major League Baseball began, the once-daring American League had grown reactionary, unwilling to confront postwar challenges--population shifts, labor issues and, above all, racial integration. The league had matured in the Jim Crow era, when northern cities responded to the Great Migration by restricting black access to housing, transportation, accommodations and entertainment, while blacks created their own institutions, including baseball's Negro Leagues. As the political climate changed and some major league teams realized the necessity of integration, the American League proved painfully reluctant. With the exception of the Cleveland Indians, integration was slow and often ineffective. This book examines the integration of baseball--widely viewed as a triumph--through the experiences of the American League and finds only a limited shift in racial values. The teams accepted few black players and made no effort to alter management structures, and organized baseball remained an institution governed by tradition-bound owners.
