Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do kids come with an owner’s manual? This book is about Jim Minton’s journey of figuring out how to raise his kids and learning a lot about himself in the process. When Jim’s children were born, he focused on raising Division I athletes who would make him look good. He started off as that obnoxious dad we have all witnessed at sporting events. He ended up with thirteen principles for improving himself, plus three amazing kids who bring him great joy as they walk in the truth. Jim loves good quotes. He kept a list on the refrigerator as his kids grew up, many of them coming from legendary basketball coach John Wooden. Jim knew his kids were going to find the bad stuff on their phones and in the culture; it was up to him to get the good stuff in front of them. Along the way, Jim discovered that the Bible is the owner’s manual he was looking for.

Book Please God Don t Call Me to Preach

Download or read book Please God Don t Call Me to Preach written by Clay Norris Wells and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-10 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please God, Don't Call Me To Preach was the heartfelt prayer of a little boy, a Methodist minister's son, in Jackson, Mississippi. At age 12 a lonely childhood was transformed by summers at Lessidale Plantation and its loving Gerald family, with a lasting bond between three boys; Nelson, Clay, and Bus, the cook's son. Little did he hope that God would answer his prayer so dramatically: make Clay a physician. He worked once with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the Montgomery Bus Boycott and locked horns with Gov. George Wallace, fighting for the rights of African Americans. Dr. King and Dr. Wells led this fight, which integrated health care in Alabama. He was one of the two Anglos in the congregation at the funeral of the four little girls killed at the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. Dr. Wells headed for Cal Berkeley in the late '60's and continued OB-GYN practice and teaching career that would take him to medical schools in Louisiana, Alabama, Idaho, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and finally Arkansas. This memoir doesn't spare anyone, and some pompous souls may find their profiles unsettling.

Book Sexual Violence in Conflict and Post Conflict Societies

Download or read book Sexual Violence in Conflict and Post Conflict Societies written by Doris Buss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a unique blend of researchers, civil society and community activists all working on different aspects of conflict sexual violence on the African continent. The contributions included here offer a detailed reading of the social and political climate within which some patterns of sexual violence unfold, and the increased policy and institutional responses shaping post-conflict environments. The chapters are organized around three main themes: the continuities between conflict sexual violence and post-conflict insecurity; the troubling category of "victim" and its representation in post-conflict settings; and the international contexts – such as international programming, aid and justice interventions – that shape how conflict sexual violence is addressed. The authors come to the topic from various academic disciplines - anthropology, gender studies, law, and psychology - and from different non-academic contexts, including civil society organizations in affected regions, and policy and activist organizations in the Global North. Collectively the chapters in this volume offer complex and detailed analysis of some of the debates and dynamics shaping contemporary understandings of conflict sexual violence, highlighting, in turn, new insights and emerging topics on which further research and advocacy is needed.
