Thirteen plates. Reprint available April 2005 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN 1-58477-496-7. Cloth. $85. * Gray [1874-1950] draws on "anecdotes and contemporary testimony" to illuminate the personalities of Kames, Monboddo, Gardenstone, Braxfield, Hailes, Eskgrove, Balmuto, Newton, Hermand, Eldin, Jeffrey and Cockburn. As he states in the preface, he attempts "to show what manner of men those old Scots jurisconsults were--to present a conspectus of their philosophy of life. Accordingly, much space is devoted to setting forth their ideas and ideals, to recording their habits, their daily walk and conversation, their studies, their recreation, their manner of comporting themselves in the various relationships of life. In short, every effort has been made to shed as much light as possible upon their morals and their manners, their wit and their wisdom" (vi). A pleasure to read, this book contains a good deal of information that is not available elsewhere.

Book Robert Louis Stevenson and the Art of Collaboration

Download or read book Robert Louis Stevenson and the Art of Collaboration written by Murfin Audrey Murfin and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores Robert Louis Stevenson's collaborative processContains new readings of thirteen works by Robert Louis Stevenson, including several rarely discussedSheds light on connections between authorship, celebrity, the literary marketplace and the creative processSupported by extensive manuscript researchThis book investigates Stevenson's literary collaborations with family and friends as he travelled Scotland, America and the Pacific. With critical readings of both major and minor Stevenson texts, supported and contextualised by unpublished manuscripts and letters by both Stevenson and those he wrote with, this book argues that Stevenson's writings are both a product of and a meditation on collaborative writing. Stevenson's self-reflective body of work reimagines late-Victorian authorship by examining the ways that authors choose material, negotiate the marketplace and, ultimately, maintain power over their own words, or let that power go.

Book Judges Judging and Humour

Download or read book Judges Judging and Humour written by Jessica Milner Davis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines social aspects of humour relating to the judiciary, judicial behaviour, and judicial work across different cultures and eras, identifying how traditionally recorded wit and humorous portrayals of judges reflect social attitudes to the judiciary over time. It contributes to cultural studies and social science/socio-legal studies of both humour and the role of emotions in the judiciary and in judging. It explores the surprisingly varied intersections between humour and the judiciary in several legal systems: judges as the target of humour; legal decisions regulating humour; the use of humour to manage aspects of judicial work and courtroom procedure; and judicial/legal figures and customs featuring in comic and satiric entertainment through the ages. Delving into the multi-layered connections between the seriousness of the work of the judiciary on the one hand, and the lightness of humour on the other hand, this fascinating collection will be of particular interest to scholars of the legal system, the criminal justice system, humour studies, and cultural studies.

Book Slavery and the Scottish Enlightenment

Download or read book Slavery and the Scottish Enlightenment written by John D. O. Fulton and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the evil nature of slavery become enshrined in law in Great Britain? What drove the change in public perception? What were the key victories on the journey to abolition and who were the key players? What is to prevent a similar evil gaining acceptance again today? Just as Britain’s industrial development in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was built largely on the back of slave labour, so too was the development of new ideas and values, shaped by the moral dilemmas arising from the shameful act of denying people their liberty. The story of the Scottish Enlightenment is entwined with that of slavery and the slave trade. In fifteen stories set between 1720 and 1865 in Britain, Africa, the Caribbean and America, Slavery and the Scottish Enlightenment introduces a diverse cast of characters, both white and black, whose moral viewpoints and active choices between right and wrong helped shape the world in which they lived. As the legacy of slavery continues to infect our lives, we face similar choices today – choices that will determine the ever-evolving values of our society.

Book The Mainstream Companion to Scottish Literature

Download or read book The Mainstream Companion to Scottish Literature written by Trevor Royle and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mainstream Companion to Scottish Literature is the most comprehensive reference guide to Scotland's literature, covering a period from the earliest times to the early 1990s. It includes over 600 essays on the lives and works of the principal poets, novelists, dramatists critics and men and women of letters who have written in English, Scots or Gaelic. Thus, as well as such major writers as Robert Henryson, William Dunbar, Gavin Douglas, Allan Ramsay, Robert Fergusson, Robert Burns, Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and Hugh MacDiarmid, the Companion also lists many minor writers whose work might otherwise have been overlooked in any survey of Scottish literature. Also included here are entries on the lives of other more peripheral writers such as historians, philosophers, diarists and divines whose work has made a contribution to Scottish letters. Other essays range over such general subjects as the principal work of major writers, literary movements, historical events, the world of printing and publishing, folklore, journalism, drama and Gaelic. A feature of the book is the inclusion of the bibliography of each writer and reference to the major critical works. This comprehensive guide is an essential tool for the serious student of Scottish literature as well as being an ideal guide and companion for the general reader.
