Book Some Observations on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation

Download or read book Some Observations on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation written by Sven Samuel Liljeblad and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The following report was originally prepared in 1961 at the request of the Honorable Henry Dworshak, United States Senator. Excepting for slight abridgment and revision of obsolete figures and statements, it contains with a few additions essentially the same materials as did the original report. The observations presented in this paper are derived from a number of years of ethnological studies among the Indians of Idaho and Nevada, studies in which I have placed particular emphasis on the languages and the oral traditions of these peoples. Although my particular area of interest has not been involved with contemporary problems of community organization, economics or politics, I have accumulated some knowledge and understanding of the local situation which may be useful to those who have recently asked me for my views. Parts of the following paper have been taken from an earlier, as yet unpublished study entitled 'The Idaho Indians in Transition,' but the materials presented are in the main a series of generalizations based on observations I have made over the years and which seem to be pertinent to the kinds of questions which have recently been raised by various individuals concerned with Indian affairs. In relation to such anthropological studies as seem relevant the manuscript deals essentially with the problems posed by assistance programs concerned with the local Indian population."--Introduction (pages I-II).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative cultural history examines wide-ranging issues of religion, politics, and identity through an analysis of the American Indian Ghost Dance movement and its significance for two little-studied tribes: the Shoshones and Bannocks. The Ghost Dance has become a metaphor for the death of American Indian culture, but as Gregory Smoak argues, it was not the desperate fantasy of a dying people but a powerful expression of a racialized "Indianness." While the Ghost Dance did appeal to supernatural forces to restore power to native peoples, on another level it became a vehicle for the expression of meaningful social identities that crossed ethnic, tribal, and historical boundaries. Looking closely at the Ghost Dances of 1870 and 1890, Smoak constructs a far-reaching, new argument about the formation of ethnic and racial identity among American Indians. He examines the origins of Shoshone and Bannock ethnicity, follows these peoples through a period of declining autonomy vis-a-vis the United States government, and finally puts their experience and the Ghost Dances within the larger context of identity formation and emerging nationalism which marked United States history in the nineteenth century.

Book A Guide to the Indian Tribes of the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book A Guide to the Indian Tribes of the Pacific Northwest written by Robert H. Ruby and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-02-27 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Native peoples of the Pacific Northwest inhabit a vast region extending from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, and from California to British Columbia. For more than two decades, A Guide to the Indian Tribes of the Pacific Northwest has served as a standard reference on these diverse peoples. Now, in the wake of renewed tribal self-determination, this revised edition reflects the many recent political, economic, and cultural developments shaping these Native communities. From such well-known tribes as the Nez Perces and Cayuses to lesser-known bands previously presumed "extinct," this guide offers detailed descriptions, in alphabetical order, of 150 Pacific Northwest tribes. Each entry provides information on the history, location, demographics, and cultural traditions of the particular tribe. Among the new features offered here are an expanded selection of photographs, updated reading lists, and a revised pronunciation guide. While continuing to provide succinct histories of each tribe, the volume now also covers such contemporary—and sometimes controversial—issues as Indian gaming and NAGPRA. With its emphasis on Native voices and tribal revitalization, this new edition of the Guide to the Indian Tribes of the Pacific Northwest is certain to be a definitive reference for many years to come.
