Book Theory of Second Harmonic Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating of Tokamak Plasma

Download or read book Theory of Second Harmonic Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating of Tokamak Plasma written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical and numerical study of tokamak plasma heating by the second harmonic of the electron cyclotron resonance is presented. It is found that the extraordinary mode is very efficiently absorbed. In contrast to previous calculations, it is also found that the ordinary mode is well absorbed at oblique incidence to the toroidal magnetic field. This finding indicates the feasibility of heating devices of higher densities than would otherwise be possible. (Author).

Book Theory of Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating of Tokamak Plasmas

Download or read book Theory of Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating of Tokamak Plasmas written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical study of tokamak plasma heating by the electron cyclotron resonance is presented. The density limitations imposed by accessibility are first reviewed. Then the predictions of linear theory (including relativistic effects on the wave absorption) are examined via solution of the ray equations in a toroidal tokamak equilibrium. These solutions indicate quite favorable characteristics for large tokamaks. Finally, the possibilities of scattering of the incident heating wave by existing drift-wave-type fluctuations and of parametric instability are examined; it is tentatively concluded that parametric instabilities and wave scattering should not be important in typical situations of interest. Book Quasi linear Saturation Effects on Electron cyclotron wave Damping of the Ordinary Mode in Tokamak Plasmas

Download or read book Quasi linear Saturation Effects on Electron cyclotron wave Damping of the Ordinary Mode in Tokamak Plasmas written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quasi-linear theory of electron cyclotron wave absorption for the ordinary mode propagating normal to the tokamak magnetic field is investigated. A two-dimensional initial value code has been developed to investigate the distortion of the electron momentum distribution from an initial Maxwellian. It is shown that for powers of interest for electron heating in future tokamaks, Coulomb electron collisions are not sufficient to avoid quasi-linear flattening of the electron distribution and therefore are not sufficient to avoid a reduction in the damping rate as compared to the linear case.

Book Electron Bernstein Waves in Spherical Tokamaks

Download or read book Electron Bernstein Waves in Spherical Tokamaks written by Abhay Ram and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the electron cyclotron range of frequencies, the high-beta NSTX plasmas are overdense to the traditional extraordinary X mode and/or the ordinary O mode. For low harmonics of the electron cyclotron frequency, the X and O modes are cutoff at the edge and for high harmonics the plasma is essentially optically thin to these modes. Thus, heating of such plasmas by electron cyclotron waves or diagnosing of such plasmas by electron cyclotron wave emission becomes problematic. However, such plasmas are optically thick to electron Bernstein waves (EBW) which are strongly absorbed or emitted by thermal electrons in the Doppler shifted vicinity of the fundamental or harmonics of the electron cyclotron resonance [A.K. Ram and S.D. Schultz, Phys. Plasmas, 7, 4084 (2000)]. In order to propagate out into the vacuum region, EBWs have to mode convert to the X and O modes at the upper hybrid resonance. In this paper we discuss the approximate kinetic model that has been developed to study this mode conversion process. From this model we show that the emission coefficients for the X and O modes from EBWs are directly related to the excitation coefficients of EBWs from X and O modes.
