This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Present Problems of New Testament Study Bible are men bent upon destroying the sacredness and authority of the Book, and Biblical criticism is a thing greatly to be deplored. Whereas, it ought to be recognized that the vast ma J ority of critics are devout and earnest men whose work is inspired by a deep love for the Word of God and a desire to know it accurately and set it forth in all its purity and power. To speak of eriti cism as a menace to the Bible is absurd, unless, f orsooth, the Bible cannot bear honest and close investigation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of the New Testament to-Day But with the political and economic aspects of the Reformation we are not now concerned. It is primarily as a religious move ment that the Reformation presents itself to us to-day, and that we feel the effects of it. And in as far as it was a religious movement it may be described as A revolt of the individual conscience against the authority of the Church. It would be difficult to point to any reforming movement in any sphere, which, however pure and lofty the original motive, does not exhibit some regrettable features. And it is to be expected that these will vary directly as the antiquity and extent of the original abuse. Book Some New Testament Problems

Download or read book Some New Testament Problems written by Arthur Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some New Testament Problems The chief use of the New Testament is, and always should be, devotional. We approach it best in the sanctuary, when our minds have been prepared by confession, prayer, and adoration to learn of Him who has said, "Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, will not enter therein." But when we have come to love the book as the revelation of Jesus Christ, we find that it appeals to our intellect as well as to our affections. The proper preparation for the pulpit is conscientious work in the study, and even laymen will find that their apprehension of Scripture truth is assisted by some acquaintance with the history of the first century and its immediate precursors, with the geography of the Holy Land, and with Semitic modes of thought and expression. Grammar is the first essential in exegesis. Textual criticism is indispensable. Historical criticism, with which the present volume chiefly deals, is still more fundamental. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Problems and the New Material for Their Solution: A Plea for Investigation, Addressed to Churchmen and Scholars Some of the subjects here treated of are closely related to the Christian faith. They have been taken up under a strong but animat ing sense of responsibility. It will at least be recognized that their tendency is not sub versive, but, in so far as the affirmations of the general Christian consciousness are con cerned, conservative. Should any one of those whose gift is that of steering the Church find time to look into this book, I would venture to suggest that the part which it most con cerns him to test is the account given of these affirmations, because they seem to determine the sense in which ordinary thoughtful Church men use certain statements of the Apostles' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture

Download or read book The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture written by Bart D. Ehrman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-02-29 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victors not only write history: they also reproduce the texts. Bart Ehrman explores the close relationship between the social history of early Christianity and the textual tradition of the emerging New Testament, examining how early struggles between Christian "heresy" and "orthodoxy" affected the transmission of the documents over which many of the debates were waged. He makes a crucial contribution to our understanding of the social and intellectual history of early Christianity and raises intriguing questions about the relationship of readers to their texts, especially in an age when scribes could transform the documents they reproduced. This edition includes a new afterword surveying research in biblical interpretation over the past twenty years.

Book A History of the Bible

Download or read book A History of the Bible written by John Barton and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literary history of our most influential book of all time, by an Oxford scholar and Anglican priest In our culture, the Bible is monolithic: It is a collection of books that has been unchanged and unchallenged since the earliest days of the Christian church. The idea of the Bible as "Holy Scripture," a non-negotiable authority straight from God, has prevailed in Western society for some time. And while it provides a firm foundation for centuries of Christian teaching, it denies the depth, variety, and richness of this fascinating text. In A History of the Bible, John Barton argues that the Bible is not a prescription to a complete, fixed religious system, but rather a product of a long and intriguing process, which has inspired Judaism and Christianity, but still does not describe the whole of either religion. Barton shows how the Bible is indeed an important source of religious insight for Jews and Christians alike, yet argues that it must be read in its historical context--from its beginnings in myth and folklore to its many interpretations throughout the centuries. It is a book full of narratives, laws, proverbs, prophecies, poems, and letters, each with their own character and origin stories. Barton explains how and by whom these disparate pieces were written, how they were canonized (and which ones weren't), and how they were assembled, disseminated, and interpreted around the world--and, importantly, to what effect. Ultimately, A History of the Bible argues that a thorough understanding of the history and context of its writing encourages religious communities to move away from the Bible's literal wording--which is impossible to determine--and focus instead on the broader meanings of scripture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the churchgoers, the Bible college students, and seminary students to do when one Bible scholar says one thing and another Bible scholar says something quite different, or worse still, several Bible scholars are giving you several different opinions on one particular Bible issue? What makes it even more unsettling is when the Christian is not well informed in that area of study, only having basic knowledge. How can the Christian possibly know which of the Bible scholars are correct? Worse still, the Christian is put in the embarrassing position on social media of telling an atheist or Bible critic one of the scholar’s views, and then the atheist or Bible critic responds to the Christian with, ‘no your evidence is outdated, as recent research points to __________,’ and then they offer another answer that put the Bible in a bad light. What is the Christian to do? What will be accomplished here in this publication is we are going to give the reader much evidence when it comes to the documents of the New Testament, how that evidence impacts our Bible translations and an in-depth look at Bible difficulties as well. This can be used to build your faith, to save someone who may have begun to doubt the trustworthiness of the Bible, and many reading responses that can be used on social media and other forms of your ministry. Andrews is an author of more than 140 books, many of which are a defense of God’s Word.

Book New Testament Texts on Greek Amulets from Late Antiquity

Download or read book New Testament Texts on Greek Amulets from Late Antiquity written by Brice C. Jones and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brice C. Jones presents a comprehensive analysis of Greek amulets from late antique Egypt which contain New Testament citations. He evaluates the words they contain in terms of their text-critical value. The use of New Testament texts on amulets was common in late antiquity. These citations were extracted from their larger Biblical contexts and used for ritual purposes that have traditionally been understood in terms of the ambiguous category of 'magic'. Often, these citations were used to invoke the divine for some favour, healing or protection. For various reasons, however, these citations have not played a significant role in the study of the text of the Greek New Testament. As such, this is the first systematic treatment of Greek New Testament citations on amulets from late antique Egypt. Jones' work has real implications for how amulets and other such witnesses from this era should be treated in the future of the discipline of New Testament textual criticism.
