Book Poets of the Bible From Solomon s Song of Songs to John s Revelation

Download or read book Poets of the Bible From Solomon s Song of Songs to John s Revelation written by and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The vividness and beauty of the language emerge in a fresh way . . . with evocative simplicity.” —Robert Alter, professor emeritus of Hebrew and comparative literature, University of California, Berkeley The world’s greatest poetry resides in the Bible, yet these major poets are traditionally rendered into prose. In this pioneering volume of biblical poets translated in English, Willis Barnstone restores the lyricism and power of the poets’ voices in both the New and Old Testaments. In the Hebrew Bible we hear Solomon rhapsodize in Song of Songs, David chant in Psalms, God and Job debate in grand rhetoric, and prophet poet Isaiah plead for peace. Jesus speaks in wisdom verse in the Gospel, Paul is a philosopher of love, and John of Patmos roars majestically in Revelation, the Bible’s epic poem. This groundbreaking volume includes every major biblical poem from Genesis and Adam and Eve in the Garden to the last pages of Alpha and Omega in Paradise.

Book Selected Poems of Solomon Ibn Gabirol

Download or read book Selected Poems of Solomon Ibn Gabirol written by Solomon Ibn Gabirol and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poet, philosopher, and sensitive misanthrope, a spectacular fly in the ointment of the refined eleventh-century Andalusian-Jewish elite, Solomon Ibn Gabirol comes down to us as one of the most complicated intellectual figures in the history of post-biblical Judaism. Unlike his worldly predecessor Shmuel HaNagid, the first important poet of the period, Ibn Gabirol was a reclusive, mystically inclined figure whose modern-sounding medieval poems range from sublime descriptions of the heavenly spheres to poisonous jabs at court life and its pretenders. His verse, which demonstrates complete mastery of the classicizing avant-garde poetics of the day, grafted an Arabic aesthetic onto a biblical vocabulary and Jewish setting, taking Hebrew poetry to a level of metaphysical sophistication and devotional power it has not achieved since. Peter Cole's selection includes poems from nearly all of Ibn Gabirol's secular and liturgical lyric genres, as well as a complete translation of the poet's long masterwork, "Kingdom's Crown." Cole's rich, inventive introduction places the poetry in historical context and charts its influence through the centuries. Extensive annotations accompany the poems. This companion volume to Peter Cole's critically acclaimed Selected Poems of Shmuel HaNagid presents the first comprehensive selection of Ibn Gabirol's verse to be published in English and brings to life an astonishing body of poetry by one of the greatest Jewish writers of all time.

Mazzoni argues that modern poetry embodies the age of the individual and has wrought profound changes in the expectations of readers.

He was a performer who held true to his religious and cultural heritage, who rallied against injustice, and who became an internationally revered musical icon. Renowned poet and scholar Kwame Dawes analyses in detail his verses and lyrics, matching them against the social and political climate of the time and asking of them what it meant to be a black, Jamaican man thrust into the limelight of western society; how change can be affected through music; and how political and ethical truths can be woven into song. His lyrics are poignant, powerful and poetic and this book showcases his written word. Updated to include an interactive timeline of his life, formed with videos and imagery, as well as integrated Spotify playlists, this is the perfect companion to Bob Marley’s recordings.

Book excerpt: "Vulture in a cage," Solomon Ibn Gabirol's own self-description, is an apt image for a poet who was obsessed with the impediments posed by the body and the material world to the realization of his spiritual ambition of elevating his soul to the empyrean. Ibn Gabirol's poetry is enormously influential, laying the groundwork for generations of Hebrew poets who follow him--rocky and harsh, full of original imagery and barbed wit, and yet no one surpassed him for the limpid beauty of his devotional verse. His poetry is at once a record of the inner life of a tormented poet and a monument to the Judeo-Arabic culture that produced him. This book contains the most extensive collection of Ibn Gabirol's poetry ever published in English.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Solomon

  • Pages : 109 pages

Download or read book Solomon s Wisdom written by Solomon and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2003-11 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three volumes were begun by Enzo at the age of 18, and he continued writing as he pursued different occupations and careers. The poems are largely drawn from his own experiences and or observations. Enzo rejects the notion of many modern poets who say that good' poetry shouldn't rhyme, and although some of his don't rhyme, he insists that a rhyming poem shows that the words are put together in a much more painstaking way. At the age of 21 after he'd written the first two volumes, Enzo met his Lord and Savior and his poetry changed as well. The style of writing did not change however and this can be seen throughout the many forms his writing takes. The poetry in this third volume can be said to be Psalmic in a way. Enzo drew much of his inspiration from the Holy Scriptures as well as his own walk in Christ. In the long poem titled simply "Nomad", he outlines the toil and struggle one goes through in one's life. Many of the Parables of Jesus have been topics which can be seen throughout his writings. All three volumes have been arranged chronologically, as this shows the ongoing learning that we all experience. Each of these poems has a Scripture attached to it, which speaks of the essence of the meaning of the poem. His prayer is that you can draw inspiration from reading them as he has from writing them.

Book The Wisdom of Charles R Solomon Volume IV

Download or read book The Wisdom of Charles R Solomon Volume IV written by Charles R. Solomon and published by . This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: And the song goes on...God unilaterally gave me the gift of poetry at age 38, with the poem entitled, God' Processing Tunnel. I transcribed it in a few minutes; and you can read it just as He gave it, in Volue 1, page 127 - still my favorite! I thought Volume 3 was my last at age 82; but, at 86, the gift keeps on giving...! Obviously, there is overlapping since the overaching truth is our identification with Christ in His death and resurrection. He invites us to lay down all that we are so that we may live out of all that He is (Gal. 2:20).
