Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Miscellaneous Results of the Work of the Division of Entomology, Vol. 7 Report for 1856) a Very interesting article on the grain Aphis (aplw's avenge Fab), in which he made the unfortunate mistake of confound ing several other species with the true grain louse; erroneous figures of one of which were published on Pl. 1, figs. 5 and 6, representing a species of Siphonophora Arooiz. This error of judgment in distinguish ing genera as found upon grain has mainly been the cause to divert the attention of later entomologists from the true characters of the Species described by Fabricius. Until the spring of 1880 the writer also entertained the opinion that the species treated of by Prof. Cyrus Thomas, in his Eighth Report (pp. 51 was identical with that mentioned and described by Fitch as Apfiz's avenge Fab. During the spring of 1880, however, the writer became suspicious that something was wrong, since the description given by Thomas did not agree with that published by Fabricius. At that time I happened to examine a lot of aphides from Pocomoke City, Md, which were reported to be extremely numerous and destructive to wheat in that vicinity. These, in my opinion, agreed exactly with the description of ap/lz's arenze Fab., and Kaltenbach, but not with the description by Thomas, and I have held to this opinion ever since. The same form, having been found by myself or received from various localities, infesting grains or grasses, agrees well with the description of the Species published by Fitch, but not with that of Thomas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Miscellaneous Results of the Work of the Division of Entomology Up to the present year the twig-borer of stone fruits and the crown miner of the strawberry have been treated as the same insect, as indicated in the appended bibliography and as will be fully explained later. Prior to the observations made by Mr. E. M. Ehrhorn, as published by Mr. Alex. Craw, the knowledge of the twig-borer was confined to the fact of its injury to peach twigs, either in terminals before the trees leaved out in the Spring, as described by Glover; or in the young shoots and later in the ripening fruit, as described by Professor Com stock and others. What was supposed to be the same insect had also been observed to affect the crown of the strawberry, as reported by Mr. William Saunders and later by other writers, one brood wintering in the half-grown larval stage in the crowns and a second brood work ing durin g early summer in the young shoots and runners. This contained about 35 larva of Limnobia cinctipes Say, and many larva of Ula elegans Osten Sacken. The larva of these crane-flies infested the upper layers of the fungus and had reduced the surface to a semi-liquid state. At the end of a week the whole mushroom was decayed and semi-liquid.
