Download or read book The Spirit of Holiness written by Terry Delaney and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2020-09-23 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does Biblical spirituality look like? What does it mean to be "spiritual"? What priorities and practices inspire one to live the Christian life well? While there are a multitude of answers to these questions, very rarely are they both clear and profound. As a result, Christians can be left feeling lost and confused. In The Spirit of Holiness, Terry Delaney and Roger Duke have collected a variety of reflections on spirituality that are shaped by the Bible, theology, and the voices and examples of those who have come before us. With authors like Al Mohler, Michael Haykin, and Steve Lawson covering topics such as perseverance, depression, friendship, choice, and faith, The Spirit of Holiness encourages and directs Christians to a healthy biblical spirituality informed by their forebears of the faith.
Download or read book Great Spoil written by J. Stephen Yuille and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of evangelicalism has forsaken a Word-based approach to Christian spirituality, so to help us recover a model of biblical piety, J. Stephen Yuille examines Thomas Manton’s sermons on Psalm 119. Following a brief account of Manton as a leading Puritan committed to the ministry of the Word, Yuille leads us on a careful investigation of Manton’s understanding of blessedness, the instrumentality of God’s Word, and the practice of spiritual duties. At the foundation stands the conviction that as we love and obey God’s Word, the blessed God communes with us by His Spirit, conveying sweet influences on our soul through His Word. Manton’s spirituality of the Word is a timely remedy for the subjective mysticism that expects God to speak through inner urgings apart from His Word. Let us learn from Manton how to listen to the Bible as if we heard God speaking to us from heaven, rejoicing like those who find “great spoil” (Ps. 119:162).
Download or read book Negotiating Toleration written by Nigel Aston and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1714 was a revolutionary year for Dissenters across the British Empire. The Hanoverian Succession upended a political and religious order antagonistic to Protestant non-conformity and replaced it with a regime that was, ostensibly, sympathetic to the Whig interest. The death of Queen Anne and the dawn of Hanoverian Rule presented Dissenters with fresh opportunities and new challenges as they worked to negotiate and legitimize afresh their place in the polity. Negotiating Toleration: Dissent and the Hanoverian Succession, 1714-1760 examines how Dissenters and their allies in a range of geographic contexts confronted and adapted to the Hanoverian order. Collectively, the contributors reveal that though generally overlooked compared to the Glorious Revolution of 1688-9 or the Act of Union in 1707, 1714 was a pivotal moment with far reaching consequences for dissenters at home and abroad. By decentralizing the narrative beyond England and exploring dissenting reactions in Scotland, Ireland, and North America, the collection demonstrates the extent to which the Succession influenced the politics and touched the lives of ordinary people across the British Atlantic world. As well as offering a thorough breakdown of confessional tensions within Britain during the short and medium terms, this authoritative volume also marks the first attempt to look at the complex interaction between religious communities in consequence of the Hanoverian Succession.

Download or read book Symon Patrick 1626 1707 and His Contribution to the Post 1660 Restored Church of England written by Nicholas Fisher and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History has not been kind to Symon Patrick. His fifty years of ministry spanned the closing years of Cromwell’s rule and the start of Queen Anne’s reign, and ranged from service as a Church of England minister in two fashionable London parishes to appointment as the “latitudinarian” Bishop of Ely. He influenced a major change in the character of the Established Church, as it moved from a confrontational fundamentalism to the broad tolerance that exists today. Patrick, recognised by his contemporaries as one of the three or four leading clergy of his generation, wrote over one hundred books that helped to define his Church, such as his pastoral work The Heart’s Ease, his devotional The Parable of the Pilgrim and his biting polemic against nonconformism, A Friendly Debate. This book assesses the significance and quality of Patrick’s contribution to the Church of England, carefully placing it against the background of the history and politics of the time and suggesting why his reputation faded after his death. Puritanism, Latitudinarianism, pilgrimage, women’s religion and spirituality, and prose style are all topics touched on here.

Book excerpt: The Van Dyck year 1999 and the various exhibitions organized in Antwerp on that particular occasion enabled both the Wetenschappelijk Onderzoeksgemeenschap Vlaamse Renaissance- en Barokkunst and the Rubenianum to organize an international colloquium in the painter's birthplace, from 17 to 19 May, 1999. The main aim of this event was to get a clearer picture of the actual state of research on the various aspects of an artistic personality that is fascinating in so many ways. It was a great pleasure to find so many scholars prepared to present their conclusions and ideas in the form of specific case studies. They discussed aspects of biographical evidence, technique, style and iconography within the wider framework of the painter's life and work. They also shed new light on Van Dyck's personality, influence and fame. The here published acts of the Antwerp Van Dyck colloquium contain the revised and updated texts of twenty lectures.
