Book Nonparametric Multivariate Multisample Tests of the Location Problem and Multivariate Regression Based on Directions of Data

Download or read book Nonparametric Multivariate Multisample Tests of the Location Problem and Multivariate Regression Based on Directions of Data written by Kyungmee Choi and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Randles' one sample multivariate sign test based on interdirections is extended to two sample and multisample tests. A heuristic argument suggests that when samples are drawn from elliptically symmetric distributions all of these tests share the same asymptotic relative efficiency with respect to conventional parametric multivariate one, two and multisample tests, respectively, under normality. Next new nonparametric multivariate two sample and multisample tests are developed based on directions of differences between paired data, each member of a pair being from different samples. Then their asymptotic relative efficiencies with respect to Hotelling's $Tsp2$ and Wilks' $Lambda$ are calculated. The relationship of our statistics to Chaudhuri's location estimates based on U-statistics is discussed. Numerically evaluated asymptotic relative efficiencies and Monte Carlo simulation studies for the various distributions show that our tests are more powerful than Hotelling's $Tsp2$ and Wilks' $Lambda$ when samples are from heavy tailed distributions. They are also competitive among other nonparametric tests when samples are from light tailed distributions. We show that their power and level breakdown points are as good as those of the univariate sign test and Wilcoxon rank sum test. Finally we apply this method to extend Kendall's $tau$ to a multivariate setting and develop nonparametric multiple and multivariate regression techniques based on directions of data. Univariate and multivariate analysis of variance are considered as special cases of the regression problem with a fixed and balanced design matrix. As the dimension of the space where the explanatory variables take their values increases, the numerically evaluated asymptotic efficiency increases for each studied distribution. For independent random variables with values in a space of fixed dimension, its asymptotic relative efficiencies coincide with those of our location tests.

Book A Smooth Nonparametric Multivariate Mixed Data Location Scale Test

Download or read book A Smooth Nonparametric Multivariate Mixed Data Location Scale Test written by Jeffrey Racine and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of tests have been proposed for assessing the location-scale assumption that is often invoked by practitioners. Existing approaches include Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Cramer-von-Mises statistics that each involve measures of divergence between unknown joint distribution functions and products of marginal distributions. In practice, the unknown distribution functions embedded in these statistics are approximated using non-smooth empirical distribution functions. We demonstrate how replacing the non-smooth distributions with their kernel-smoothed counter-parts can lead to substantial power improvements. In so doing we extend existing approaches to the smooth multivariate and mixed continuous and discrete data setting thereby extending the reach of existing approaches. Theoretical underpinnings are provided, Monte Carlo simulations are undertaken to assess finite-sample performance, and illustrative applications are provided.

Book On a Class of Multivariate Multisample Rank Order Tests II

Download or read book On a Class of Multivariate Multisample Rank Order Tests II written by Madan Lal Puri and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On a Class of Multivariate Multisample Rank Order Tests II: Tests for Homogeneity of Dispersion Matrices In the parametric theory, the problem of testing homogeneity of dispersion matrices has nothing to do with the homogeneity of location parameters. However, in the nonparametric case the formulation of the hypothesis of invariance deems the identity of distributions, and this, in turn requires the homogeneity of location parameters. Thus we consider the following problems: (i) Tests for the homogeneity of dispersion matrices assuming the identity of location parameters. Some permutationally distribution free tests for this problem are considered here and their large sample properties are studied; (ii) Tests for the homogeneity of dispersion matrices without assuming the identity of location parameters. Here the basic permutation argument is not tenable, and only large sample properties are considered. Finally (iii) the problem of testing simultaneously the homogeneity of location parameters as well as the dispersion matrices is briefly discussed. This book was released on 2013-02-06 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Puri is one of the most versatile and prolific researchers in the world in mathematical statistics. His research areas include nonparametric statistics, order statistics, limit theory under mixing, time series, splines, tests of normality, generalized inverses of matrices and related topics, stochastic processes, statistics of directional data, random sets, and fuzzy sets and fuzzy measures. His fundamental contributions in developing new rank-based methods and precise evaluation of the standard procedures, asymptotic expansions of distributions of rank statistics, as well as large deviation results concerning them, span such areas as analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, multivariate analysis, and time series, to mention a few. His in-depth analysis has resulted in pioneering research contributions to prominent journals that have substantial impact on current research. This book together with the other two volumes (Volume 2: Probability Theory and Extreme Value Theory; Volume 3: Time Series, Fuzzy Analysis and Miscellaneous Topics), are a concerted effort to make his research works easily available to the research community. The sheer volume of the research output by him and his collaborators, coupled with the broad spectrum of the subject matters investigated, and the great number of outlets where the papers were published, attach special significance in making these works easily accessible. The papers selected for inclusion in this work have been classified into three volumes each consisting of several parts. All three volumes carry a final part consisting of the contents of the other two, as well as the complete list of Professor Puri's publications.

Book Recent Advances and Trends in Nonparametric Statistics

Download or read book Recent Advances and Trends in Nonparametric Statistics written by M.G. Akritas and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-10-31 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of high-speed, affordable computers in the last two decades has given a new boost to the nonparametric way of thinking. Classical nonparametric procedures, such as function smoothing, suddenly lost their abstract flavour as they became practically implementable. In addition, many previously unthinkable possibilities became mainstream; prime examples include the bootstrap and resampling methods, wavelets and nonlinear smoothers, graphical methods, data mining, bioinformatics, as well as the more recent algorithmic approaches such as bagging and boosting. This volume is a collection of short articles - most of which having a review component - describing the state-of-the art of Nonparametric Statistics at the beginning of a new millennium. Key features: • algorithic approaches • wavelets and nonlinear smoothers • graphical methods and data mining • biostatistics and bioinformatics • bagging and boosting • support vector machines • resampling methods
