This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surface Water Supply of Illinois: Central and Southern Portions, 1908 1910 The investigations have been concentrated upon streams in the central and southern portion of the State where water supply, prevention of overflow and reclamation of swamp land make the strongest appeal for immediate study of the problems. It is essential that records of stream ow shall be maintained during a period of years sufficient to cover all stages, in order that within reason able limits the entire range of ow from the absolute maximum to the absolute minimum may be determined. The length of such a period manifestly varies for different streams and cannot be absolutely deter mined. Experience has shown that the records should cover from five to ten years, or for some streams twenty years or more, the limit being determined by the relative importance of the stream and the inter dependence of the results and other long-time records on adjacent streams. Book The Water Resources of Illinois Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Water Resources of Illinois Classic Reprint written by Frank Leverett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Water Resources of Illinois The glacial deposits yield such an abundance of good water that over a large part of the State but few wells have gone below these deposits. Where the drift is thin, wells have entered the rock. In northern and western Illinois much prospecting for artesian water has been done. The logs of wells are seldom sufficiently full or reliable to warrant publication, and the writer has had very little opportunity to examine well drillings. From many of the wells, however, information of more or less value has been Obtained which throws light upon the character and availability of such water. No investigation of the water power of the streams has been under taken further than the collocation of results obtained by others; but the use of streams as sources for city water supply has been investi gated, and analyses of waters from this source, as well as from other sources, have been obtained. Download or read book Report of Sanitary Investigations of the Illinois Mississippi and Missouri Rivers written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Sanitary Investigations of the Illinois, Mississippi and Missouri Rivers: With Relation to the Effect of the Sewage of the City of Chicago, and the Sanitary Conditions of the Water Supplies of the Cities of Chicago and St. Louis What shall be the effect of the Chicago Drainage Canal upon the water supply Of the city of Chicago, which is drawn from Lake Michigan, and upon the water supply of the city Of St. Louis, which is drawn from the Mississippi River, is the sanitary problem which apparently gives most concern to these two great cities, and through these cities Illinois and Missouri are interested and involved. From the time the city of Chicago first began to develop into a trading post of some importance, the citizens have had to rely upon Lake Michigan for water for domestic use. In the early days the water was distributed throughout the city by water carriers, who would fill their water carts from the lake with buckets and distribute the water to the citizens. About fifty years ago the first water works system for distributing water by means of pipes was constructed in Chicago, and from that time the water supply sys tem has been developed until today it represents millions of dollars of in vestment, hundreds Of miles Of distributing mains, and supplies water to about two million people, or more than one-third Of the population of the state Of Illinois. The water supply is still taken from Lake Michigan, but instead of being drawn from near the shore as formerly, it is now taken through tunnels which extend from two miles to four miles under the bottom of the lake to where the intake cribs have been located. These tunnels have been built under the lake at great cost for the purpose of securing pure water from Lake Michigan, but with only partial success. Book The Quality of the Surface Waters of Illinois Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Quality of the Surface Waters of Illinois Classic Reprint written by W. D. Collins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quality of the Surface Waters of Illinois The Illinois State Water Survey, organized in 1895, has made a great many analyses of Illinois waters, but most of them have been for the purpose of determining the purity of waters for domestic use. Many analyses of the mineral content of waters have been made by the State Water Survey, but these are mainly of well waters. The railroads of the State have made many partial analyses of all sorts of waters in their efforts to obtain for locomotive boilers those that are least injurious. The samples of the river waters are selected usually at random or in the driest seasons. Thus, with a very large number of partial analyses available, it was not possible to learn definitely just what might be expected in the way of water at any point on any river in the State. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Fourth Meeting of the Illinois Water Supply Association: Held at the University of Illinois, March 5 and 6, 1912 The Proceedings were issued at a late date owing to certain mat ters connected with the State Water Survey that required all of the attention Of the Secretary immediately after the last meeting. This year arrangements have already been made with the printer to have the work Of printing begun April Ist and to have the Proceedings issued in 60 days thereafter. Material not ready in time will be omitted. Advertising contracts are being received and more than two-thirds of last year's contracts are already renewed. It is hoped that there may be an increase in the amount Of advertising in the coming Proceedings though the short time remaining before the Proceedings go to press may limit the quantity Obtained. Owing to the unexpectedly large amount of unpaid bills for dues and advertising Show in the last report of the secretary-treasurer it was necessary to economize somewhat during the past year. It was not thought possible to furnish reprints to authors free and only 1000 instead of 1250 copies of the Proceedings were printed. From these and other economies there is an actual balance in the treasury. This balance does not include the. 1912 dues which should be reserved for the expenses following the 1912 meeting. While there was an appar ent balance in the last report there was an actual deficit. Enough of the unpaid dues and all the unpaid advertising has been Collected, mak ing up the deficit. The rest of the unpaid dues for 1910 has been marked Off as uncollectable and it is not included in the statement con cerning unpaid dues and advertising in this year's summary.
