Book Public Lighting

Download or read book Public Lighting written by W. J. Dibdin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Lighting: By Gas and Electricity The scheme of the present work has been to collect together a series of representative facts relating to the production and utilisation of light for public use, whether by means of coal gas or electricity. In such a connection auxiliary methods, such as the use of acetylene and petroleum, could not be passed over, and therefore are included. It would have been impossible to comprise full details of all adjuncts relating to thwe several subjects within the compass of a volume of the present size, and therefore much interesting matter has necessarily been left out, but it is hoped that the essential features have been indicated with sufficient clearness. The reader who desires to follow the various processes involved in the production of either coal gas or electricity, af r reading the introductory accounts herein given, will doubtless continue their study in the more strictly technical text-books. The accounts given of the results of actual working operations will, it is believed, be of no little interest, particularly the full information afforded in the valuable reports by Mr. Bellamy, City Lighting Engineer of Liverpool, whose work in this direction has deservedly gained the approbation of all those who have followed its progress Probably in no other town has public lighting been more successfully and economically studied and carried into effect. The particulars relating tothe progress which has been made in the production and utilisation of electricity is well exemplified in the case of Bristol, where the important factor of the day-load has received much attention, resulting in a striking success. A feature of the present work which will, it is hoped, be of much assistance to those having charge of public lighting is the valuable series of tables, giving full particulars of the systems employed in a large number of representative towns both in America and England. The author has to express his sincere thanks to the various authorities referred to, who have in every case kindly revised the proof sheets, thereby bringing them up to date and ensuring their correctness. Sincere thanks are due to those gentlemen who have kindly supplied illustrations for the work and assisted with much valuable information. Book Gas Manufacture and Lighting

Download or read book Gas Manufacture and Lighting written by Henry O'Connor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gas Manufacture and Lighting: A Course of Five Lectures Soho, Birmingham. Ten years after Murdoch's practical experiment in Cornwall, Lebon, a French engineer, gave the first public display of gas-lighting in France, he also having lighted his house in Paris with this illuminant. January of 1804 saw the arrival of Winsor, who delivered many lectures which helped to bring forward the merits of gas-lighting. He, however, had only a very superficial knowledge of his subject, and many of his statements were erroneous. However, there is no doubt that to him is due largely the beginning of the London Gas Companies, more especially that huge concern now known as the Gas Light Coke Company. Murdoch read papers before the Royal Society of London, and was awarded the Society's gold medal. He was also the inventor of the first motor-car. From about 1812 onwards gas companies were started in many parts of the country, until now almost every village even can boast of its gas manufactory. It might be interesting to mention that the Edinburgh Gas Company was established in 1817 with a Mr. Grafton as its consulting engineer. The first gas pipes were fixed some distance from the walls of the houses, as architects insisted that they must be hot. Whenthe first gas-holders were put up, they had to be enclosed in houses, and one of such houses is still to be found at Musselburgh Gas Works with the beams inside for the counterbalance weights, although it is now used as a coal store. The Royal Society of London recommended that these gas-holders should be limited in size to 6000 cub. Ft. (they are now made as big as cub. It was tried to convince these worthy scientists that there was no danger, by making a hole in the side of a gas-holder and lighting the issuing gas; and although no explosion occurred, they were still op posed to any increase in size. Book Lighting by Acetylene

Download or read book Lighting by Acetylene written by Frederick Dye and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lighting by Acetylene: A Treatise for the Practical Lighting Engineer, Containing Elementary Information and Details for Those About to Take Up the Work There is not the least doubt now about Acetylene Gas being commercially applicable to the many purposes for which artificial light is needed, particularly in places where coal gas and electricity are unavailable and only oil illumination otherwise possible. It can now be said quite positively that this gas is the light of the future for country houses and works, unless, of course, some thing better' and cheaper should be devised, which is very unlikely. Acetylene can now be made (given a proper gene rator) bya lad or any unskilled person, without super 'vision and with no risk; and it can be had at a cost that compares equally With coal gas at about 3s. 6d. Per thousand feet for a given candle-power or brilliancy of illumination. This is after allowing for wear and tear and interest on outlay. Should the present price of carbide go down, or should its gas-yielding qualities be increased, then acetylene will compare, of course, more favourably still. 'acetylene. The present cost of the gas, however, is no obstacle to its free adoption, for it is' in very few country places that coal gas costs less than 3s. 6d. Per thousand feet, and in many districts it exceeds this greatly. Probably most people would rather pay a little more for coal gas supplied by a gas company, as the trouble of making the acetylene, small as it is or should be, is still a trouble, and the outlay for the apparatus has to be considered. Therefore acetylene is unlikely to displace coal gas where the latter exists but it is already a possible and strong rival to coal gas if it should be a question of which gas plant shall be laid down to light a village. For single-residence plants acetylene has nothing to fear from coal' gas, neither need it fear much from gasoline, which is dirty, ill - smelling and expensive in compari son with the later illuminant. Gasoline is also more dangerous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Is proposed, tested by the apparatus prescribed for the time being by the Metropolitan Gas Referees. Under the clause dealing with the construction of gas-works, the new resi duals provisions appear, but (properly) without the one-third purchasing restriction. There were precedents for this omission during the session of last year.
