Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of Political Economy, Vol. 2: The Hill and the Valley, a Tale When one or the other difficulty, however, was overcome, the path lay direct to the porch of the cottage, on the bench of which lay sometimes a newspaper or a tobacco-pipe, and sometimes a ricketty work-basket, full of undarned stockings, according as the master or mistress of the cottage had been sitting there to enjoy the air. No place could be more retired than this porch, for it was nearly surrounded by garden and orchard ground, and was screened by a thick hedge of elder on the side where the gate was placed. The master of this abode was John Armstrong, a hale man of seventy-nine. Its mistress was Margaret Blake, his housekeeper, a middle-aged woman, but as old-fashioned in her habits and appearance as her venerable companion. Book Illustrations of Political Economy Vol 6 of 9 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of Political Economy, Vol. 6 of 9 In case of any reader questioning whether Dutch men in the seventeenth century could advocate free trade, I mention that the principle has never been more distinctly recognized than at a remoter date than I have fixed, by countries which, like Holland, had littleto export, and depended for their prosperity on freedom of importation. Every restriction im posed by the jealousy of those from whom they derived their imports was an unanswerable argu ment to them in favour of perfect liberty of ex change. As their herrings and butter were univer sall acknowledged to be the best herrings and but er in existence, and yet were not enough for the perfect comfort of the Dutch, the Dutch could not resist the conclusion, that the less difficulty there was in furnishing their neighbours with their incomparable herrings and butter, in return for what those neighbours had to offer, the better for both parties. The Dutch of the seventeenth cen tury were therefore naturally enlightened advocates of free trade. - Whether their light has from that time spread among their neighbours equally and perpetually, my next Number will show. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of Political Economy, Vol. 7 of 9 From the moment of beginning my work, one of my most anxious endeavours has been to keep myself out of the sight of my readers - not from any affectation of reserve, but because, in this case, there is no necessary connexion between the author of the work and the matter discussed in it. Occasions have arisen, however, to induce me to Speak in the first person, in a preface; and I now do so again on account'of certain questions which have been publicly as well as privately treated, respecting the proper'direction of the popular influence which is attributed to me, and which it would be equally weak and hypocritical in me to disclaim.
