Book Some French Writers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some French Writers Classic Reprint written by Edward Delille and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some French Writers I found my way to the top of a winding staircase in the right wing of the pavillon, which stood, in the uptrending dignity of its white facade with dark green shutters symmetrically closed, at the back of a graveled courtyard whose gate open on the Rue de Monsieur, calmest among the smaller thoroughfares of the Quartier Saint-Germain. I was admitted into a minute ante-chamber, where the usual sensation of fresh dimness prevailed; was then ushered through a study, hardly less minute, but bright and cheerful in the warm whiteness of its walls and ceiling and rich various hues of many handsomely bound books; some hangings were now drawn aside, and in a subtly-decorated tiny retreat at the back I met Paul Bourget. Book Twentieth Century French Writers

Download or read book Twentieth Century French Writers written by Madame Mary Duclaux and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twentieth Century French Writers: Reviews and Reminiscences I meant this book to be an image, a reflection, of the Twentieth Century in France, so far as it is shown in literature during the first fourteen years of its course. But my book is small, the subject is vast: an actual, living movement, a growing generation, is a difficult thing to copy - it will not keep still! And it branches out so wide: there are so many French writers of the younger sort! I am overcome with remorse when I think of the gifted beings whom I have left out! I remember that child whom Saint Augustine saw, trying to gather the sea into his little shell; like him, I see the waters stretching inimitably: I have only brought away a sample. Yet those who taste it may have some faint idea, if not of the breadth and the numerousness of the literary movement in France, at least of its savour and its quality. Given the limits of my little volume, I was compelled to make a choice; and there is always some injustice in a selection. Why should some be taken and others left? Why accept Rostand and reject Bataille? Why give Madame de Noailles and say nothing of Fernand Gregh? Why gather up Boylesve and Andre Gide, neglecting Estaunie, and Sageret, and Paul Adam? If I have Marie Leneru, why not Sacha Guitry? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Famous French Authors

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous French Authors: Biographical Portraits of Distinguished French Writers Theophile Gautier, was born at Tarbes, August 31st, 1811. When three years old, he went to live in Paris, we might say he returned there, so much is he a part of Paris. He writes of himself, "I learned to read at the age of five years, and after that time, I could say with Apelles, Nulla dies sine linea. He took his first lessons at the college of Louis le Grand, and ended them as day-pupil at Charlemagne. His father, a very good linguist, assisted him in Latin; but the boy's taste was not for the purely classic authors. Livy and Cicero wearied him; Martial, and Catullus, Apuleius and Petronius, were his delight. So dear to him were these writers of the decadence, that he sought to imitate them in all varieties of metre. Book A History of French Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of French Literature Classic Reprint written by Charles Henry Conrad Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-12 with total page 978 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of French Literature HE lack of a convenient and yet comprehensive history of French literature, beyond the range of skeleton outlines or compendiums of facts, has long been apparent from experience to the present writer. On the other hand, excellent works in French, such as those of Brunetiere or of M. Lanson, are written from a standpoint unfamiliar to the English-speaking reader or student, and take too much for granted. M. Lamson's book is, perhaps, the best one-volume history of French literature in existence, but foreigners often find it difficult to handle. An effort is here made to meet the needs of readers in a work going beyond simple outlines, yet not pretending to specialisation in every period a thing which is impossible for one man now that we are, of necessity, either mediaevalists or moderns. The book might, perhaps, more fittingly be called a literary history of France, inasmuch as the relations have been emphasised of literature and social environment, and the Latin writings of the Middle Ages have been included. Accuracy has, of course, been sought as far as possible in view of the wide range of the subject. Yet the author does not aspire, as some do, to the merit of an absolutely independent judgment on every topic. On the contrary, he considers it the duty of the composer of a synthesis to rely, to a reasonable degree, on those who have spent months or years on individual writers whom he must perforce treat summarily. He sets himself down unhesitatingly as a pickpurse of another's wit the authorities from whom he has readily drawn will, it is hoped, be found accounted for in the bibliography. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern French Literature The volume is furnished with a likeness of one whose triple renown as poet, orator, and historian, while illustrating the inti mate union in France between letters and politics, has increased his glory as the hero-statesman of the Third French Revolution. The engraving from which this mezzotint is taken was copied, it has been conjectured, from a portrait of Lamartine by his wife. Although the original was painted some years ago, it gives a better idea of his countenance and air than any of the prints which have lately appeared. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of French Literature Instead of closing the survey, as do some books, with the decline of Romanticism, or as others, with that of Naturalism, the history of French literature has been traced down to the present day. It may be objected that living writers are too near to us to allow of an impartial and complete judgment on their works. No attempt has been made to pass any such judgment, but such an account of the French literature of today is given as may at least serve to indicate its general tendencies. Book Some Modern French Writers a Study in Bergsonism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Modern French Writers a Study in Bergsonism Classic Reprint written by G Turquet-Milnes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Modern French Writers a Study in Bergsonism Those critics who study the destiny of philosophical ideas for the ironical pleasure of seeing them work in exactly the opposite direction from that which their founders intended have not failed to remark that the two great movements of French thought since the 16th century - Calvinism and Cartesianism - developed states of mind utterly different from those Calvin and Descartes wished to create. Descartes would have been horrified to hear himself called the father of the French Revolution, and Calvin equally so at being called one of the founders of free thought. It would seem, then, that in addition to the impetus given by a powerful writer, there is another and more powerful movement to which the first must conform, if it is to succeed. The fact is, that when we cut up society into slices, two important groups are soon discovered - the political and the literary, and the former always ends by absorbing the latter, except in the very rare case of a genius who is both legislative and poetical: Mahomet, for example. The social aspirations of a people always manage to get themselves adopted in the end, and that for obvious reasons. Vox populi, Vox Dei. The only doctrines which have a chance of surviving are those which in the course of time blend not only with the tendencies of the moment, but with the general spirit of a nation, nay, of mankind. Download or read book Specimens of French Literature from Villon to Hugo written by George Saintsbury and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens Of French Literature From Villon To Hugo: Selected And Edited T un origin of this book has been described in the Preface of the Short History of French Literature (c larendon Press), to which it is intended to form a companion. I need not here weary the reader by indicating at length the various objects I have had before me in the compilation. Among these, complete illustration of the beauties of any particular author has, it is needless to say, found no place, much less collection of my own favourite pieces. It has occasionally been necessary, for the sake of completing the panorama, to draw on what some people may not think the best work of individual writers. To make the whole a sufficient tableau of the various achievements of French literature from the literary point of view has been the main thing considered. Must emphasise the words from the literary point of view, ' because from any other the allotment of 3pace may seem oepricious. It has also to be remembered that some kinds of literature, such as prose fiction and drama, especially the latter, lend themselves with difliculty to the purpose. For instance, Racine is undoubtedly a greater name in French literature than Alfred de Musset. But Racine wrote in astyle which has few variations, and which is peculiarly difficult to exhibit in those variations except at great length. For the present purpose therefore a single extract suflices Again, Musset is, according to some, a greater name than Gautier, according to none, perhaps, a less. But Gautier was master of a variety of forms which are very different from each other and can be well illustrated, all being im portant as instances of the powers of the language: while Musset was more confined in range, and even within that range (as in his incomparable Proverbes) cannot be always shewn by sample at all. These are some of the conside rations which impose on the compiler of such a book as this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This may not seem surprising when one thinks of the importance of the crisis through which France has just passed, but it is so when one realizes how that country had to exert all its strength to keep itself from being submerged; literature in such circumstances, is more than ever a luxury. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer of French Literature The first edition of this little book appeared without a preface: the second may perhaps be allowed one, if only to express the Author's thanks to his critics and to the public for the reception given'to his work. Some corrections of phrase have been made, and a few errors in the dates have been rectified. That such corrections have not been more numerous is, I believe, mainly owing to the great care with which my friend Mr. Andrew Lang read the proof sheets for me and to the valuable suggestions which he made. In deference to the request of several friends an index has been added, though I myself consider the addition somewhat superfluous in the case of a book the body of which is little more than an index in itself. I have limited it to those names in connection with which something more than a mere mention will be found in the text. For the compiling of this index I owe my best thanks to Miss Emily J. Carey; while for indicating to me a somewhat important omission in a passage relating to Pascal I am obliged to M. Paul Stapfer, Professor in the Faculty of Letters at Grenoble.
