Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Facts About John Paul Jones Thanks to the generous and untiring zeal Of our late ambas sador to France, the grave of John Paul Jones has recently been discovered in Paris, and his remains have been removed by the governrrient to this country for interment at Annapolis. This discovery has revived the interest which our people have always taken in the career of this illustrious captain Of the seas, and has of late provoked much discussion in the maga zines and newspapers Of the various incidents in his life, and, in particular, of the reason for his change of name. The reason for this change of name has ever been a puzzle to his biographers. Most Of them pass it by with the mere state ment that he changed his name for unknown reasons. Some few attempt to account for it upon theories, which, while they may be plausible, yet do not appeal to the intelli gent reader. Of these there are three, which perhaps seem most plausible, and which, one or another, are generally accepted as true by most people. I will proceed to give these, and the reasons which occur to me for rejecting them as nu sound an-d without anything but conjecture to support them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Paul Jones Too much cannot be expected of a mere midship man, but John Paul must have employed his brief time in the navy to good purpose, for in the letters that he afterward wrote to Joseph Hewes and Robert Morris of the needs of the new navy his suggestions were both wise and practical. He also, at about this time, advocated the establishment of a naval school not unlike the one that has since won honor at Annapolis. Book John Paul Jones

Download or read book John Paul Jones written by Evan Thomas and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller from master biographer Evan Thomas brings to life the tumultuous story of the father of the American Navy. John Paul Jones, at sea and in the heat of the battle, was the great American hero of the Age of Sail. He was to history what Patrick O’Brian’s Jack Aubrey and C.S. Forester’s Horatio Hornblower are to fiction. Ruthless, indomitable, clever; he vowed to sail, as he put it, “in harm’s way.” Evan Thomas’s minute-by-minute re-creation of the bloodbath between Jones’s Bonhomme Richard and the British man-of-war Serapis off the coast of England on an autumn night in 1779 is as gripping a sea battle as can be found in any novel. Drawing on Jones’s correspondence with some of the most significant figures of the American Revolution—John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson—Thomas’s biography teaches us that it took fighters as well as thinkers, men driven by dreams of personal glory as well as high-minded principle, to break free of the past and start a new world. Jones’s spirit was classically American.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of John Paul Jones He was the most precious and valuable of all that little vessel's precious cargo, including the ship's company, for he turned out to be the fa mous and gallant John Paul Jones. The first thing for us to do in going over the life and brave deeds of Paul Jones, is to take away his last name, which he had no right to at all. He took it, as the English said he took many other things without any just claims: However this may be, his right name was simply John Paul, and he was born on the 6th of July, 1747. Like several other Revolutionary heroes, he was not born in the country whose glorious history he helped to make, but on a fine old estate in the parish of Kirk-bean, Scotland. And like many another great man, his parents were poor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of John Paul Jones, Vol. 1 The fame of Paul Jones has been the sport of romance and the plaything of tradition ever since the early days of his glorious association with America's struggle for independence. Bringing terror to the simple natives of the stricken British coasts by his descents upon their unprotected ports, hero of wellnigh impossible exploits and of battles fought by moonlight under the lee of their headlands, his name passed into the domain of romantic legend and was one to conjure with. Chapbooks depicted him in highly colored prints, bloodthirsty and terrible, and mothers frightened their children with the bare mention of his name. During the years shortly following his death, history and romance alike were busy with his name. But these histories are now out of print, and only to be found in rare collections or on the reference shelves of public libraries, and the romances have ceased to charm. The patriotic services of General Horace Porter in discovering the hero's forgotten remains and bringing them to America amid manifold honors to a permanent and glorious resting-place at Annapolis have revived public interest in his character and deeds. Supreme Court, the late Afathew Carey, Esq., of Philadelphia, and the lion. William A. Graham, Secretary of the Navy, to the Author, relative to Paul Jones. Monticello, February 14, 1825. Dear Sir, During my residence in ParU, I was much acquainted with Commodore John Paul Jones, whose life you propose to write, and had much to do with him; yet my memory i - so decayed that from that source I can furnish you nothing worth a place in his history. I believe I cannot better comply with your request than by sending you all the papers relating to him in my possession. His letters to me, which are many, will probably throw some lights, which you may not possess, on his occupation daring that period. His death happened after I left Paris, and I presume you know that the National Assembly, then sitting, expressed their respect for him by wearing mourning. I shall be glad if what I furnish may add anything to the establishment of that fame which he truly merited. Be pleased to accept for yourself the assurance of my great respect, THOMAS JEFFERSON. Montpelier, April 28, 1825. Dear Sir, I have received your letter of the 23d instant, inclosing a copy of your prospectus of a biography of John Paul Janes. The subject you have chosen for your pen, gives you an opportunity of doing justice to an individual whose heroiim will fill a brilliant page in the history of the American Revolution. I am sorry it is not in my power to add to the materials you have derived from other fources. I must regret, also, that my personal acquaintance with Captain Jones was so slight and transient, that I ought not to attempt a view of his character. His bust, by Houdon, is an exact li...
