Book Some Explanatory Lists and Grammatical Texts Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Explanatory Lists and Grammatical Texts Classic Reprint written by Theophile James Meek and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Explanatory Lists and Grammatical Texts The following texts from the collection in the British Museum were copied by me during the summer of 1914, but due to the exigencies of military duties I have been unable to do much'with them until the present time. Rather than delay longer their publication I am postponing to a later time a more complete editing of the texts and am contenting myself now with merely the publication of the plates. The texts are largely Explanatory Lists, together with some Grammatical Texts, and a few Syllabaries, unfortunately only partially preserved. They constitute practically all of the tablets of their kind that remain unpublished in the Museum. A goodly number of the tablets are fairly complete, while others are more or less fragmentary. It'will be noted, however, that the smaller fragments in most cases contain glosses and so are of importance. The tiny fragment, K. 7696, is significant in that it contains several new signs. I have arranged the plates in the order of the Museum numbers of the tablets as making for ease of reference. All of the texts are here published for the first time, with the exception of a few which are republished because of the corrections made on former editions, eg. The following were published by Langdon K. Slam in ra., XIII, 192; K. 8315 in ajsl., xxvm, 243; and Sm. 9 in ra., XIV, '20. A number of duplicates of previously published texts appear in this collection, of which the following may be noted K. 4242 is a duplicate of II R., 26, No.1; K. 9887 of II R., 62; Sm. 1701 of ct., XIV, 10; and Th. '1905-4-9. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Weather Omens of En ma Anu Enlil

Download or read book Weather Omens of En ma Anu Enlil written by Erlend Gehlken and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-08-03 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Assyro-Babylonian omen series Enūma Anu Enlil, written on seventy cuneiform tablets, bears witness to the early understanding of the mutual interactions of heaven and earth on both the physical and the religious levels. To facilitate accessibility, technical and linguistic commentaries as well as an excerpt series were compiled by the scholars of old. This ancient knowledge, which was still largely characterized by mythological concepts, was never completely abandoned, not even when the ‘calculating’ astronomy became prevalent in the first millennium B.C. The series deals in four parts with the moon, the sun, weather phenomena, and fixed stars and planets. This book offers an edition of the texts of the second half of the weather section with the accompanying material.

Book Cuneiform Texts from the Folios of W G Lambert Part Two

Download or read book Cuneiform Texts from the Folios of W G Lambert Part Two written by A. R. George and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-06-02 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book publishes 323 handcopies of cuneiform tablets found in the academic papers of W. G. Lambert (1926–2011), one of the foremost Assyriologists of the twentieth century. Prepared by A. R. George and Junko Taniguchi, it completes a two-part edition of Lambert’s previously unpublished handcopies. Written by Babylonian and Assyrian scribes in ancient Mesopotamia, the texts collected here are organized by genre and presented with a descriptive catalogue and indexes. The contents include omen literature, divinatory rituals, religious texts, a scribal parody of Babylonian scholarship, theological and religious texts, lexical lists, god lists, and a small group of miscellaneous texts of various genres. The tablets are mainly from the British Museum, but some come from museums in Baghdad, Berlin, Chicago, Geneva, Istanbul, Jerusalem, New Haven, Oxford, Paris, Philadelphia, Tokyo, Toronto, and Washington. In addition, there are copies of eight tablets whose current whereabouts are unknown. This third collection of Lambert’s handcopies published by Eisenbrauns—following Babylonian Creation Myths and Cuneiform Texts from the Folios of W. G. Lambert, Part One—is a crucial part of the intellectual history of the field of Assyriology. In addition, many of these texts are published herein for the first time, making them a valuable and important resource for further study.

Book Prophecy in the Ancient Near East

Download or read book Prophecy in the Ancient Near East written by Jonathan Stökl and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-02-06 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1990s there has been an emphasis on the study of ancient Israelite prophecy in its ancient Near East context. Prophecy in the Ancient Near East is the first book-length study that compares prophecy in the ancient Near East by focusing on texts from Mari, the Neo-Assyrian State Archives, and the Hebrew Bible. The author analyzes prophecy in each culture independently before comparisons are made. This method demonstrates how prophecy is a part of the wider system of divination, but also shows where scholarship has unduly imported concepts found in one corpus to the other two. This method, for example, calls into question the supposed link between music and prophecy from the Hebrew Bible to the ancient Near East. This work provides an up-to-date analysis of ancient Near Eastern, including Israelite and Judean, prophecy to scholars and students alike. "I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, and I can highly recommend it to anyone interested in prophecy in Israel and the ancient Near East." Lena-Sofia Tiemeyer, University of Aberdeen, Review of Biblical Literature "The content of Jonathan Stökl’s book...testifies to the value of the book for the studies of prophecy in the ancient Near East." Wojciech Pikor, John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, The Biblical Annals

Book Lama tu

    Book Details:
  • Author : Walter Farber
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2014-03-31
  • ISBN : 1575068826
  • Pages : 487 pages

Download or read book Lama tu written by Walter Farber and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lamaštu was one of the most important Mesopotamian demons, playing a dominant role in the magico-religious and magico-medical beliefs and practices of ancient Mesopotamia for nearly two millennia. Yet, she has never been the subject of a scholarly monograph dedicated to the textual and visual evidence for her, her activities, and the measures that ancient magical specialists took to counter her. This volume also falls short of this description, because it covers only one part of the material: it is an edition of the textual record only, which is, however, collected here as completely as seems possible today. Walter Farber, who has studied these materials for decades, presents a comprehensive collection of all of the known texts, the texts of the primary incantations in a “score” format, and transliteration and translation of a number of ancillary texts. This much-awaited volume will fill the void in the literature on this aspect of the life and thought of ancient Mesopotamian peoples regarding the character of this malevolent creature and the means of warding off the threat that she posed.
