Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some European Railway Practices The position of railway officers and foremen is on a higher plane on the European roads. In this country, mechanical engineers of experience in charge of the design of cars and locomotives, master mechanics with important divisions under their charge, and shop superintendents, to say nothing of traveling engineers, general foremen, shop foremen, etc., in many cases receive salaries which are smaller than the wages earned by many of the men working under their direction. Is such a condition productive of the best results? While Mr. Jacobs has gone into the design and practices on foreign roads to a greater or less extent, and his observations in this respect are important because he is so thoroughly conversant with Ameri can methods, yet, important as these are, those mat ters concerning the organization which he has drawn to our attention are far more important. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revised and Enlarged: Edition of the Science of Railways The Train Service of a railroad is its supreme feature. Roadways existed before locomotives were invented, but they had no general interest to mankind. The locomotive vitalized them. It is the trains that rush and roar through the land, loaded with the world's traffic, which make rail roads interesting to the public and useful to man kind. The subject is a great one, the greatest, in fact, of all those connected with railroads. In reference to the Train Service of railways, a statistical comparison of the speeds attained by the highest class passenger trains in the United States and Europe is extremely interest ing, as the following table showshm as 00 no. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Practice: A Collection of Working Plans and Practical Details of Construction in the Public Works of the Most Celebrated Engineers This early impression on the author's mind was confirmed by the opinion of gentlemen the best qualified to decide on such a question, and it became conviction when he was assured by his intelligent publisher, that inquiries after such works were frequent, and the demand for information connected with them urgent. Satisfied, therefore, as to the paucity of such information, and the consequent value of any particulars descriptive of the minutiae of this most important branch of engineering, he could not hesitate as to the propriety of producing his Railway Practice, to which he now solicits the favourable notice of the reader. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Working and Management of an English Railway In June, 1890, the Author was invited to read a paper at the Royal United Service Institution upon the Transport of Troops by Rail within the United King dom, and as a contribution, however humble, towards the elucidation of what might in certain contingencies become a question of great importance in connection with the defence of the country, he has thought it not out of place to embody the result of his consideration of the subject in chapter xvii. Of this work. At an earlier period of the same year, the writer delivered a lecture at the Society of Arts, upon the subject of Modern Improvements of Facilities in Rail way Travelling, and in the hope that this may prove to be to the general reader a not altogether uninteresting résumé of railway progress in this country during the last half century, the lecture, with certain emendations has been printed as an appendix to the present edition. Book Railway Practice and Railway Possibilities as Affecting Dividends and Safety

Download or read book Railway Practice and Railway Possibilities as Affecting Dividends and Safety written by W. Bridges Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-15 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Practice and Railway Possibilities as Affecting Dividends and Safety: With Diagrams of Engines, Trains, and Brakes Nearly twenty years back I published a work under the title of Road Progress, treating the general question of Railways and also of the proportions and excess of dead weight to paying load. There is no doubt too large a proportion of dead weight, but the supposition that the dead weight can always be exactly adjusted to the paying load is a fallacy. The Engine and Train must be a fixed load, because it must go and return whether full or empty, just the same as the omnibus and horses, whereas the paying load, whether of goods or passengers, will always be varying. The calculation of accommodation must therefore be for the maximum average, and not the actual maximum. And herein lies a dificulty. The public makes a great outcry, if fifty passengers are occasionally disappointed in a train calculated for five hundred, and so the Directors provide for five hundred and fifty, and the dead weight for the fifty is dead loss as often as the fifty fail to come. And this process goes on till at last trains commonly run half full, and with large engines doing the work of small ones.
