Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on "Regulation of Enzymatic Systems Detoxifying Xenobiotics in Plants" intended to provide a forum to scientists from academia, industry, and govemment for discussing and critically assessing recent advances in the field of xenobiotic metabolism in plants and for identifying new directions for future research. Plants function in a chemical environment made up of nutrients and xenobiotics. Xenobiotics (foreign chemicals) are natural or synthetic compounds that can not be utilized by plants for energy-yielding metabolism. Plants may be exposed to xenobiotics either deliberately, due to their use as pesticides or accidentally, from industrial, agricultural, and other uses. Plants, like most other organisms, evolved a remarkable battery or metabolic reactions to defend themselves against the potentially toxic effects of xenobiotics. The main enzymatic reactions utilized by plants for xenobiotic detoxification include oxidation, reduction, hydrolysis and conjugation with glutathione, sugars (e.g., glucose), and amino acids. Eventually, xenobiotic conjugates are converted to insoluble bound residues or to secondary conjugates, which are deposited in the vacuole of plant cells.

Book excerpt: In the summer of 1976 a successful workshop on nucleic acids and protein synthesis in plant systems was organised in Strasbourg by Jacques Weil and Lawrence Bogorad. The participants in the workshop, were, without exception, excited both by the quality of the work discussed and by the rapid progress being made in several areas of genomic analysis and expression in plants. It also became apparent that there was a need for an international assembly of this sort at regular intervals. These workshops not only encourage stim ulating discussion and constructive thinking but also result in increased collaboration and productive liaison between laboratories with common interests. Hence a ten-day advanced studies institute course was organised in Edinburgh from 11-21 July 1979, and in this volume we have published the contributions given by the invited speakers. The subjects discussed covered most areas of plant molecular biology and the lecturers were asked to balance a review of their chosen subject with the results of their own recent research and likely future advances. Probably the most important technical advance since the previous meeting of this group in Strasbourg, was the application of restriction enzyme analysis and cloning techniques. This is illustrated in many of the published lectures and was the basis for many of the more informal discussion sessions.

In this regard, many countries across the globe are investing heavily in the bioenergy sector for R&D to increase their energy security and reduce their dependence on imported fossil fuels. Currently, most of the biofuel requirement is met by sugarcane in Brazil and corn in the United States, while biodiesel from rapeseed oil in Europe. Sweet sorghum has been identified as a unique biofuel feedstock in India since it is well adapted to Indian agro-climatic conditions and more importantly it does not jeopardize food security at the cost of fuel. Sweet sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is considered as a SMART new generation energy crop as it can accumulate sugars in its stalks similar to sugarcane, but without food¬¬-fuel trade-offs and can be cultivated in almost all temperate and tropical climatic conditions and has many other advantages. The grain can be harvested from the panicles at maturity. There is no single publication detailing the agronomic and biochemical traits of tropical sweet sorghum cultivars and hybrid parents. Hence, an attempt is made in this publication- “Characterization of improved sweet sorghum cultivars” to detail the complete description of cultivars. This book serves as a ready reference on the detailed characterization of different improved sweet sorghum genotypes following the PPVFRA guidelines for the researchers, entrepreneurs, farmers and other stakeholders to identify the available sweet sorghum cultivars and understand their yield potential in tropics.

Although the crop is reportedly native to Africa, it is grown worldwide largely because it thrives well under wide rainfall, varied day lengths, and varied soil conditions and can tolerate varying degrees of biotic and abiotic factors and stresses. In Sweet Sorghum: Characteristics, Cultivation and Uses, the authors review the physiology and adaptation of sweet sorghum crops to varied environmental and climatic conditions across Sub-Saharan Africa. The authors also discuss the saline soil distribution and cultivation of sweet sorghum in China. Soil salinization is one of the most prominent environmental problems in the world, which limits crop yield and productivity seriously. Today, about 20% of the worlds cultivated land and nearly half of all irrigated lands are affected by salinity. Lastly, the utilization of sweet sorghum bagasse as raw material in the development of an environmentally friendly particleboard bonded with a natural adhesive without the addition of harmful chemical substances such as citric acid was carried out. The effectiveness of several manufacturing conditions such as pre-treatment of particles before hot pressing condition, citric acid contents, pressing temperature and time, and sucrose addition were investigated.
